ddlashington female Seminary.
THIS Institution is pleasantly located in the Borough of Washing- on, on the National Road, one of the greatest thoroughfares between the East and West; 25 miles from Pittsburgh, and 32 from Wheeling. Washington is one of the chief towns in Western Pennsylvania, con- taining over 3,000 inhabitants, generally industrious, intelligent and moral. It is one of the most fertile spots in the West, surrounded by picturesque scenery, and noted for its healthfulness; being situated on the table land between the base of the Allegheny range and the great Western Valley, it escapes the diseases incident to both extremes.
The Seminary Buildings are large and commodious; the principal one is 124 feet long, 42 wide, and four stories high, containing 40 lodging rooms, a large Hall, Recitation Rooms, &c., all well arranged as to light, air, and the general comfort of its inmates.
The Pupils are accommodated with furnished apartments, where they odge and study. By occupying private rooms, two in each, they are enabled to form habits of neatness, order and delicacy, which are impos- sible where a number of individuals occupy a single room. The grounds adjacent to the Buildings are tastefully laid off and ornamented, and suf- ficiently large for exercife and recreation.
Connected with the Institution, is a valuable Library, for general reading, and for reference. There is, also, an excellent Philosophical and Chemical Apparatus, which is not only used by the Lecturer, but by the Pupils, while receiving instruction.
CONDITIONS OF ADMITTANCE.
THE School-year is divided into two Sessions of Five Months each, commencing the First Monday in November and May, and closing the last Thursday in March and September.

20
Towels are expected to be furnished by the Pupils, and all articles of Clothing should be marked with the name in full.
CANDIDATES FOR ADVANCED STANDING.
Before admission to an advanced Class, a rapid review will be requir- ed in all the Studies of the regular course, with which the candidates suppose themselves thoroughly acquainted. In this review, the length of the daily lessons will be regulated by the promptness and accuracy of the recitations. Of course, the amount of time thus devoted at the be- ginning of a term, will depend on the scholarship of the young Ladies, and the thoroughness with which the studies have been pursued. All candidates for an advanced standing must make due allowance for the time thus occupied, or they will be disappointed in their classification.
A record of Scholarship is daily kept by each Teacher, which is read weekly to the School, and publicly at the close of the Session.
PREPARATORY COURSE.
This precedes the regular course, for the benefit of such Pupils as are not sufficiently advanced, or too young to be admitted to the regular Classes, the age for admittance to these being thirteen.
It comprises Reading, Orthography, Penmanship, Geography, Arith- metic, Grammar and History of the United States, ($11 per Session.)

GOVERNMENT.
WHILE it is to a great extent Parental, its true spirit is Republican; being regulated by a system of laws that recognise the rights of each in- dividual, and makes each in a degree responsible for the well-being of the whole; also, in the extensive intercourse which results from our system, the social nature of the Pupil is cultivated. A constant inter- change of views and feelings, friendly collisions of mind, the occasions that are presented for practical lessons of self-denial and self-control, of self-respect and respect for others, and the exercise of sympathy and af- fection, all tend to the forming and development of those habits and feelings which should distinguish the social circle. Yet, all these ad- vantages are secondary; subserving the higher duties of morality and religion; tending to the great purpose of teaching the responsibilities and duties which we owe each other, as children of one common Father; and keeping in view that the great end of all education, intellectual, social and moral, is to make us better perform our duties to each other and to God. Regular hours are devoted to study, recitation, exercise and devotion. Places of public worship are in the town for nearly every denomination of Christians. Pupils whose Parents or Guardians have any preference, can attend accordingly. Others are required to attend with the family of the principal. Pupils who have not near relations ยท residing in the Town or immediate vicinity, are expected to board in the Seminary. Parents and Guardians are earnestly requested not to fur- nish their daughter's and wards with jewelry or needless articles of apparel.
23
GENERAL REMARKS.
Our course of study is designed to be thorough. This cannot be ac- complished without time and industry on the part of the Pupil. Pa- rents should not hurry their daughters over the course, as the forma- tion of superficial habits disqualify them for the responsibilities and en- joyments of life.
Great pains are taken, in providing and retaining a sufficient number of approved teachers, and every facility and convenience offered to the pupils to pursue their studies advantageously.
The health of the scholars is regarded as an object of the first im- portance-and it is constantly kept in view in all the arrangements and regulations both of school and family.
More than seventy of the graduates of this Institution have been sent as teachers to different parts of the Union, and the demand has been on the increase for two or three years past. An extensive field of useful- ness is evidently widening to the female sex. This increasing demand will justify parents in educating such of their daughters as have talents for this profession.
Lectures were delivered during the past year on the following subjects :
Professor Alrich, on Chemistry and Natural Philosophy. Prof. L. G. White, Elocution.
