Historical Background

"Bridgens Atlas" of 1864 shows Akron as a village called New Berlin, which was then a part of Ephrata Township. At this time Akron was little more than a group of houses at the intersection of what is presently Ninth and Main Streets. The "Historical Atlas" of 1875 shows that Akron had grown to approximately thirty homes. In 1884 Akron was described as a small hamlet with a population of 325 persons, served by a post office and store.

In November of 1894, the Grand Jury certified the incorporation of Akron as a Borough and Akron officially became a Borough in 1895. The Charter of Akron Borough bears the following, in part ... "That the said town of Akron be and the same is hereby incorporated into a borough in con- formity with the prayer of the petitioners that the corporate style and title thereof shall be "The Borough of Akron" ... At the time of incorporation, the area of the Borough was approximately two hundred acres and the pop- ulation given in the 1890 census was six hundred and six persons.

One of the early projects of the Borough was the construction of a walk from the town to the trolley stop, on the electric trolley line which operated between Mechanicsburg and Ephrata. In addition to the trolley stop, Akron enjoyed the privilege of a station on the Reading and Columbia Railroad.

During the past, Akron has possessed several notable landmarks, some of which still stand today, and others which have bowed to progress. Among the remaining landmarks are the old Wagner Hotel, which today is an apart- ment house on the corner of the Village Square. To the east of the Hotel stood the Village Band Hall, a two-story building, which for many years was the center of the community social life. Here, the Community Band prac- ticed, boys and men played basketball, and the community held fairs and carnivals. A famous landmark which has vanished was Romig's Hotel, which was located on what is now the parking lot for Snader's Store.

The chief industry of the Borough for many years was the manufactur- ing of hand-made cigars. At one time over fifty cigar "factories" were located in Akron. Many of these factories were located in the back rooms, or up- stairs rooms, of houses; however, several of the factories were quite large and employed many people. During recent years, the manufacture of shoes and related light industry, pretzels and women's garments have become the major source of employment within the Borough.

Similar to other "small towns", Akron has always had general stores, repair shops, and other service shops to serve the community. Akron also had a bank in its early years when, in 1912, the Akron National Bank opened and listed its capital at $35,000.00.

Churches were an important part of the early community life of Akron. The Akron Congregational Church was organized about 1875, and in 1924 the Borough listed among its religious institutions the Grace United Evangelical Church, Mt. Zion Evangelical Church, Zion Lutheran Church and The Church of the Brethren.

The Mennonite Central Committee which was organized in 1920 has been operating out of the Akron headquarters since the early 1940's.

Historically, Akron has enjoyed the same experiences as countless other small towns in America. This small town heritage which has en- riched the lives of past residents is to a great degree responsible for the prosperity and growth of the Borough today.
