PREFACE.
HE Pennsylvania Society of the Colonial Dames of America in pre- senting a new edition of their Register again refer, with what is deemed a pardonable pride, to the fact that, from the action of a small group of women, met together at 1301 Locust Street, Phila- delphia, April 8, 1891, to form a Pennsylvania Society, has resulted our large national organization, which has spread a network of patriotic Colonial interest among women in the thirteen original States, in the District of Columbia, and far beyond these limits into a number of the non-Colonial States.
Those who responded to the original invitation and call issued by Mrs. Craw- ford Arnold and Miss Anne H. Wharton, and thus assisted in the formation of the Pennsylvania Society of the Colonial Dames of America, and those who were elected to office prior to incorporation will find their names appended to the charter of this Society as its originators. As such, no date of election is given when their names appear upon the Register. This same honorable dis- tinction has been made with regard to the names of a number of women who were invited to join the Pennsylvania Society during the organization period, although not actually present as founders at the meeting of April 8, 1891.
The Pennsylvania Society being for some months the only Society, and accepting members who traced their lines back to ancestors in the other original States, our early eligibility lists included services in all of the thirteen Colonies. As the different States formed their organizations and met the Pennsylvania Society in council, this eligibility list was modified and changed in order to meet the requirements of the incoming Societies. Originally the founding of a town was accepted as sufficient service for admission. This led to confusion; and when the first National Convention was held at Wilmington, May 19, 1892, it was decided to omit founders of towns from the eligibility lists of the Societies then in session. Later, when an adjourned meeting of this first Council was held in Washington, D. C., January, 1893, it was decided by the Societies there convened that each State Society should form its own eligibility list according to the early laws of that State and in accordance with the constitution of the National Society, such lists to be used by the eligibility committees of the several. States. From time to time, as the States have sent in their lists, ser- vices used as bases of admission to the Pennsylvania Society have been added to and taken from the eligibility lists used in Pennsylvania. · This process of sub- traction and addition has taken place in all the Societies, but has been more

sensibly felt in Pennsylvania than in any other State, because here was the first Society formed. In this edition of the Register of the Pennsylvania Society a distinctive mark has been attached to those services which were once used as bases of admission, but which for reasons explained above are no longer so employed.
This somewhat involved explanation has been made in order to reconcile apparent discrepancies in the Register, which may cause the Committee for the Examination of Papers to appear in the light of inconsistent and arbitrary tribunals, whereas they are in reality composed of a number of fair-minded women who have very little individual authority, being themselves governed by hard and fast rules made by the Societies of the thirteen States.
