The Sharon Chamber of Commerce

The Sharon Chamber of Commerce was organized in 1916 by the American City Bureau of New York City. It absorbed and took the place of the old Sharon Civic Associ- ation. A membership of 350 was built up and a compre- hensive program of work was laid out. Embodied in this pro- gram of work was the plan for immediate betterments look- ing to the best future city growth covering such subjects as improvement of streets, sidewalks, sewers, street lighting, parks and playgrounds, and the removal of poles and over- head wires, also the accomplishment of other works that might aid and assist the city and its citizens.

The organization has aimed to use all reasonable means to create conditions which would attract new and diversified industries to Sharon.

During the course of its existence many improvements have been successfully engineered by the Chamber: Among the direct accomplishments are the securing of the Buhl Farm Trolley Extension, establishing Dollar Day (Sharon incidently is one of the best Dollar Day towns in America), staging Buhl Day, the most successful event ever put on in this valley. It also assisted in passing bond issues, very materially aided the construction of State Street bridge, gave strong support to Pymatuning Dam Bill, helped to make possible Sharon's White Way, urged the paving of State Street, conducted Liberty Bond Campaigns, helped to issue a tax list, conducted the cam- paign for the third class city, was one of the driving forces in the Mercer County Good Roads Campaign for a $1,500,000 bond issue. The above are only the major works. Many. other steps have been taken which have invariably resulted in civic improvement.

The Chamber has brought more noted speakers to Sharon than any other organization.

From its very inception, the Chamber of Commerce has done everything in its power to accomplish the program of work laid out. The result has been a constant growth' until the membership has now reached 430 and it continues to grow. Much work yet remains to be done and new work, that only such a body can handle, is cropping forth almost daily. The Chamber of Commerce will continue to serve the city to the best of its ability.
