Old St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church

Old St. Mary's, shown here as it appeared in 1783, located in Lancaster, the oldest inland city in the United States, was serving the Catholic people of the area 34 years before the Continental Congress convened here in 1776 for a period of nine months.

In 1742, according to Court House records, the Rev. Henry Neale, Superior of the Maryland Jesuits, purchased two lots, Nos. 235 and 236. A small log church was built on this property by Rev. Wilhelm Wappeler, S.J., the first resident pastor, and Mass was offered in it that year. Documented evidence, however, shows that Mass was celebrated in a home as early as 1735. The early pastors attended not only to the needs of local Catholics but also to those in the region stretching to the Ohio River.

The log church was destroyed by an incendiary fire on December 15, 1760. A stone church was erected immediately on the same spot and was dedicated in 1762. This edifice was used until 1852, the year the present church was erected for worship. The cornerstone was laid by Bishop John N. Neumann of Philadelphia on August 15, 1852. It was consecrated March 25, 1854. A fire in 1867 necessitated extensive remodeling. The interior was further beautified in 1885 and again in 1955. The stone church was torn down in 1881 to make way for an Academy and Church Hall which presently serve as the Convent by the Sisters of Mercy and a por- tion of the present parish school.

Due to the rapid growth of St. Mary's, a second parish was urgently needed. To this end the German-speaking members organ- ized their own in 1850 resulting in St. Joseph's two blocks away.

The roster of priests serving St. Mary's 225 years of history is indeed a glorious one. After Father Wappeler, we find the name of Father Michael Egan, O.S.F., who became the first bishop of Philadelphia in 1810. He served here in 1802-03. From 1822 to 1877, Father Bernard Keenan indelibly left his mark. He was appointed Vicar-General of the Harrisburg Diocese in 1868. Rt. Rev. Jere- miah F. Shanahan, first Bishop of Harrisburg, assumed the acting pastorate here in 1877 until the appointment of Father P. J. McCullagh in 1882, who served until his death in 1910. The names of Fathers Crotty, Brown, Park and Tighe, of recent years, ring loud and clear. Father Thomas J. Gralinski, the present pastor, is continuing this long line of service to God and Parish and community.
