FOREWORD
This supplement to the history of the Western Salisbury Church contains the record as kept by the pastors of the two congregations the, Rev. Myron O. Rath and Rev. Daniel E. Schaeffer. It's a record of their official acts during the . past five years. It brings the statistics down to the present. It contains the rec- ord of baptisms, confirmations, marriages and deaths. It marks the ebb and flow of human life in our congregation or church. To-day we celebrate the 175th An- niversary of the erection of the first church. The present building is the third that was erected here. It was built in 1819, nearly one hundred years ago. The changes that were made to the building during the years are noted in the history. As a matter of record let it be stated that during the summer of 1916 the church was completely renovated within and without. The church and chapel were frescoed and painted and all of the church property was improved at a cost of about $1500. Our church has many warm friends and loyal supporters, but friendship and loyalty will not keep at bay the problems pressing for solution. We too are facing the problems that confront the rural church. Slowly our ceme tery fund is growing, the interest of which is to be used in caring for the graves of our dead. But the dead should not receive our chief and only consideration. The living too should be kept in mind. The establishment of an endowment fund for the perpetuation of our work here should not be put off too far. Some of the advantages and opportunities that cities and towns furnish, our church should provide. Our church should become the social center for a large section of the country around. For nearly a hundred years this church has been the mecca for hundreds of Christian men and women. Here they sought solace for their grief, quickening for their souls, enlightenment for their hearts and minds in the preaching of the Word and the administration of the Sacrament. Let our church now also become a place where the young people can gather for study and mental improvement, and where the more specific work of the church in the world may be learned. Today we celebrate our Fifth Quinquennial Reunion amid sur- roundings most pleasing. Though some of us will soon be among the missing, yet the work will not cease. As in the days past, may God's blessing rest upon dear old Salisbury church for years to come.
