PREFACE.

As it is gene S it is generally acknowledged, that a Directory in a mercantile city is one of the moft ufeful Publications ; and, from the circumfrance of the great acceffion of new inhabit- ants to the city every year, together with the frequent removals, are the leading motives which have actuated the Editor to publifh the prefent one.

3a

To the Directory is fubjoined a Lift of the Duties paradic on Goods, with all other Information refpecting the Cufrom- Houfe, interefting to Merchants and all others concerned in mercantile tranfactions, with a further collection of ufeful matter.

From the utility of the work, the Editor flatters himfelf to experience the patronage of the Public every year, as he intends publifhing one annually, and which will be keeping on foot a desirable collection of genuine information.

The Subfcriber is well aware of the almoft impracticabilit » of compiling a publication of this nature without errors ; for thefe, which he trufts will be found but few, he folicits the indulgence of a generous Public.

CORNELIUS WILLIAM STAFFORD.
