د

PREFACE.

T being generally acknowledged, that a Directory in a mercantile city, is one of the moft ufeful Publica- tions ; in addition to which, the rapid fale the laft met with, together with the great acceffion of new inhabitants to the city every year, with the frequent removals, have been fufficient inducements to the Editor to publifh the prefent one.

To the Directory is fubjoined a lift of Duties payable on Goods, with all other information refpecting the Cuf- tom-Houfe, interefting to merchants and all others con- cerned in mercantile tranfactions-Stamp Duties, with a further collection of ufeful matter.

From the general credit which this work gained laft year, he flatters himfelf with meeting the fame encourage- ment ; in confequence he will be enabled to publifli one annually, and which will be keeping on foot this valuable coilection of genuine information.

The Editor is well aware of the almoft impracticability of compiling a work of this nature without errors; but from the confidence in thofe gentlemen who have been employed in the collection of the names, he trufts no errors will be found, or otherwife but few ; for which he doubts not the indulgence of a generous Public.
