PREFACE.

"THE very liberal patronage which has been extended the Editor of the PHILADELPHIA DIRECTORY, from his commencement of the arduous undertaking, while it excites lively gratitude, and prompts to future diligence, incontestibly demonstrates the utility of the work.

As an attempt is now making, by the aid of a host of hawkers, to palm upon the pub- lick a catch-penny production in the form of a Directory, and a malicious report having been industriously circulated, that the Publi- cation of this work was discontinued, (in ad- dition to more aggravated injuries the editor was not prepared to expect,) he feels it a duty he owes the publick and himself to state that the annual publication of his Directory shall be continued, and will appear as early in each succeeding year as possible.

As it has ever stood unequalled for co- piousness, accuracy, and neatness of execu- tion, he pledges unremitting diligence to render the subsequent editions acceptable to his fellow citizens. The present number, (incomparably the best ever published in this city,) comprises much useful information to the Merchant, and Mechanick, not to be found in any other.

In consequence of a new arrangement it is particularly requested that alterations in firms, new connections in business, removals, &c. be sent as soon as they take place, to No. 13 South Second street, that they may appear immediately ; to which annual, mbscribers can have access free of expense.
