CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVENTH.
Winter Operations of the Army-The Beginning of the End -Deftruction on James River-Laft of Fubal Early- Charlottesville-Duguidfville - Amberft Courthouse-Ar- rival at White House-Rejoining the Army of the Potomac.
1864. D URING the winter of 1864-65, active operations of great importance were pufhed forward in other parts of the immenfe field covered by the armies. Gen- eral Sherman, with his army in fplendid fighting trim, Nov 14th. left Atlanta on the 14th of November, to "move through Georgia, fmafhing things, to the fea," as he ex- preffed the object of his expedition, when propofing it to General Grant. He emerged from the cloud that enveloped his operations, at Fort McAllifter, on the Georgia coaft, and occupied Savannah on the 2Ift of December.
Dec. 15th. On the 15th of December, General Thomas, after a two days' battle, near Nafhville, completely " ufed up" Hood's army, driving it from the field in utter confufion, and taking many thoufand prifoners, including four gen- eral officers.
Dec. 25th. On Chriftmas Day, an attempt was made at Fort Fifher, in North Carolina, by General Butler, but was fuch a wretched failure that no officer has yet been found to bear its refponfibility. A fecond expedition

was, however, at once fitted out, which reached its def- 1865. tination on the 13th of January, 1865. On the day Jan. 13th. fucceeding, a reconnoiffance was pufhed up to within 500 yards of the Fort, and on the 15th it was taken by Jan. 15th. affault, with its entire garrifon and armament, after the moft defperate fighting.
Although it is not within the fcope of the hiftory of a fingle regiment to detail the operations of our immenfe army, yet this brief outline is in fome fort neceffary to »enable us to underftand the pofition of affairs at the opening of the fpring.
During the month of January our regiment was in- creafed by the addition of about 100 recruits, and on the 26th of that month was relieved at Hagerftown, where Jan. 26th. it had been in winter quarters fince November 16th, by the 2d U. S. Cavalry.
On the 28th, we rejoined our brigade, near Winchef- Jan. 28th. ter, and fet to work in the beft of fpirits to prepare our fecond fet of winter quarters, in which we remained comfortably until the 27th of February.
While in this camp our number was increafed by the arrival of 800 recruits, by fpecial favour of General Sheridan, and on the 10th of February, Major Leiper was muftered as Lieutenant-Colonel, and Captain Mor- row as Major.
On the 20th of that month Sheridan received the fol- lowing inftructions from General Grant :
" As foon as it is poffible to travel, I think you will have no difficulty about reaching Lynchburg with a cav- alry force alone. From there you could deftroy the railroad and canal in every direction, fo as to be of no

From Lynchburg, if information you might get there would juftify it, you could ftrike fouth, heading the ftreams in Virginia to the weftward of Danville, and pufh on to join Sherman," who had been marching northward, " fmafhing things" in the Carolinas.
The final campaign againft the Confederacy was opened when Sheridan broke camp near Winchefter, and fet out with his troopers in accordance with the in-e ftructions he had received from General Grant.
Feb. 27th.
In the gray dawn of the 27th, we left Winchefter, Major Morrow in command, with the Ift Cavalry Di- vifion, under General Merritt, the 3d Divifion, under General Cufter, and one brigade of the old army of Weftern Virginia, under Colonel Capehart, and two fections of artillery.
For feveral days the roads had been in procefs of preparation for a foft, if not an eafy, march, by a contin- uous fall of rain, which alfo melted the fnow on the mountains, fwelling the ftreams in the valleys until they were almoft impaffable.
We had an excellent turnpike road to favour our ad- vance, and pufhed rapidly forward with the advance brigade through Middletown, Strafburg, and Wood- ftock to Edinburg, doing a march of thirty-five miles, a good old Virginia ftorm beating down on us all day, by way of keeping up our fpirits. The enemy were in front of us in fmall force during the day.
Feb. 28th.
At 4 o'clock the next morning, we took up our march for Mount Jackfon, fkirmifhing all the way with a fmall

force of the enemy, and the ufual rain. At Mount Jackfon we croffed the North Fork of the Shenandoah, which, by this time, was in a fearful ftate, between the melting fnow of the mountain and the rain of the val- ley. Here feven troopers were drowned in croffing, in- cluding one of our own men. After croffing we rode through New Market to Sparta, where we got about two hours' fleep.
