The German Reformed, Lutherans, Methodists, and Presbyterians have


/ each respectable congregations. The educational interests of the place are under the supervision of Prof. Wm. Vaughan, who is conduct- ing a fine select school. A beautiful town hall, the property of the Odd Fellows, (recently erected), is an enterprise worthy of com- mendation. The business interests of the town have suffered from want of railroad facilities The town has four or five good stores and the necessary mechanical industries, principal of which is the fine steam tannery of Mr. W. A. B. Clark. The annual production of this factory is 4,000 sides (upper stock) for market. with quite an amount of country work.


STONERSTOWN is situated in Liberty township where the H. & B. T. R. R. crosses the Juniata, north of Saxton. It has a church, school house and about 40 private residences, On the completion of the railroad its principal business was attracted to Saxton. Distance from Bedford 28 miles.


SAXTON is on the line of the H. & B. T. R. R. where Shoup's Run branches. The headquarters of this line of road, their ma- chine ' shops, round houses, and principal buildings being located here. It is the coal centre of the county, as all the coal shipments from Broad Top are made from this point, The town boasts of an excellent school, several religious societies, an Odd Fellows' hall. and about 60 private residences. Distance from the county seat 28 miles.


SPRING HOPE is in East St. Clair township, on the Quaker Val- ley Road, west of Fishertown. It bas a fine grist mill, store, school - house and ten or twelve private residences. Distance from Bedford nine miles.


SPRING MEADOW Is in East St. Clair township, the location of the well known Trout Springs, one of the finest bodies of water in the county. There is a fine grist mill, store, and eight or ten residences in the immediate vicinity, surrounded by an excellent farming com- munity. Distance from Bedford 12 miles north west,

STUCKEYVILLE P. O .- At the junction of the Pittsburgh and Wheeling turnpikes, and near Napier station on the B. & B. R. R., 5 miles west of Bedford.


TATESVILLE-The first station on the railroad east of Everett founded by Jos. W. Tate, Esq., of Bedford. Here is mined nearly all the iron ore used by the Riddlesburg furnace. The town has a store, hotel, saw mill, two churches, a school house, and 25 or 30 residences in and around the place. Distance from Bedford twelve miles via Railroad.


WOLFSBURG-(Named in honor of the late Rev. David Wolf)- A station on the B. & B. Railroad west of Bedford. It has a fine grist-mill and saw-mill, a church and parsonage, school house, and an excellent store. The Kemble Coal & Iron Company are mining good ore near this place. It'contains about 20 residences. Distance from Bedford three miles.


WEST END P. O .- At the west end of Dry Ridge, on the Wheel- ing turnpike, 18 miles west from Bedford.


YELLOW CREEK P. O. Is located at Steel's Mills, a small town on Yellow Creek, midway between Hopewell and Pattonsville. Smith Bros. have a good store at this point. Distance 16 miles northeast from Bedford.


WOODBERRY BOROUGH-Situate near the centre of Morrison's Cove (the garden spot of Bedford county) .- is one of the most pleasantly located towns in Bedford county, and the scenery around is romantic and beautiful beyond description. Water power of the first order, and not excelled by that of any county in the State for manufacturing purposes, is here at hand. Immense deposits of iron ore and limestone are met with everywhere in the vicinity, and the principal mines and ore banks being connected by rail with the fur- naces. Wealth and general prosperity are the characteristics of its people.


A fine grist mill, several excellent stores, an Odd Fellows' Hall, a Normal School. and one or two good churches, with the usual me- chanical establis ments, all in a flourishing condition, are here. Dis- tance from Dediord 20 miles northeast.

of the large woolen manufacturing establishment of Messrs. J. I No- ble & Bro. is one of the most attractive spots in Morrison's Cove. It has two fine churches, a good school house, and a hotel. It was found- ed by the Hon. Jos. B Noble, and is the property, principally, of his heirs. Distance from Bedford 18 miles northeast.

G. R. OSTER & CO. This large Dry Goods and Grocery House is located on Pitt street, in the centre of the business quarter of the town, and adjacent to some of the best hotels. The firm is of long standing and do a large trade, and it is one of the most popular establish- ments in the county.


GEO. BLYMYER & SON, Hardware, Tinware, Stoves, &c. This is the oldest establishment of the kind in the county, and has a " No. 1 " reputation for work- manship and fair dealing. Location, Pitt st.


S. S. METZGER & CO., Hardware and Furnishing Goods The largest business house of the kind in the county. Mr. M. is one of the live, go-ahead business men of the day, and controls a very extensive trade. A very popular house; location, Pitt st.


J. W. RIDENOUR, Watches, Jewelry, &c. Mr. Ri- denour has recently supplemented one of the necessities of the town, by the establishment of his fine business store. This gentlemen is from Cumberland, and has earned a wide reputation for business capacity and workmanship. Location, Pitt st.

J M. SHOEMAKER, Crystal Front, Dry Goods and Grocery House, on East Pitt street, is one of the most attractive business houses in the county. On the first floor is a spacious store room well stocked with goods. The second floor is occupied as a dwelling by Mr. S., and the third floor is used as a Masonic Hall.


EMPORIUM OF FASHION, S. D. Middleton & Co as a ladie's furnishing store, is becoming very popular. Mr. M. has the reputation of being quite a connoisseur in his line, and knows how to serve his numerous lady cus- tomers.


A. E. FYAN is doing a large Grocery business on East Pitt st. Mr. F. has ample means, is a thorough business man, and is driving a brisk trade.


INSURANCE HOUSE .- The establishment of a first class insurance business in a county like Bedford, was a task of considerable magnitude, and yet we are pleased to note that the Insurance Agency of H. O. Kline is one of the most substantial. Mr. K., represents some of the best companies in the United States, and the citizens of Bedford county have life and property insurance facilities second to none in the State.


THOS P. BEEGLE .- Boots and Shoes. Centrally located, and a first class business house, having a large custom trade. Bears a high reputation for workmanship and integrity. Pitt st.


MOSES LEPPEL, general Clothing Store, and one of the best in the county. Largely patronized and gener- ally appreciated on account of the quality and cheapness of his goods. Pitt st.

NATHAN SCHACK, general Clothing Store, corner Pitt and Richard sts., known as Bowser's corner. This gentleman is one of our live. business men of the age, and is very popular. Has a large trade and most excellent stock.


B. M. BLYMYER, Tinware, Stoves &c. Located on Pitt st., and doing a fine business. Everything in Mr. B's establishment is quite up to the standard, and merits pop- ular patronage.


BARCLAY & KEGG, Coal Dealers. This is a sound firm and drives a lively trade.


STONER & LINE, Furniture, &c., Pitt st. An enter- prising business firm and doing all in their power to merit public patronage.


WM. BRICE, Cigar Manufactory, Mr. B. is manu- facturing an excellent brand of Cigars, and is building up a substantial trade. Dealers in this line of goods, would do well to patronize this establishment.


AMONG the mechanical industries of Bedford county, the Iron Foundry, Machine Shops and Wood Shops of Messrs. SHIRES & JORDAN, of Bedford, are worthy of note. This establishment has been in operation for many years, and the agricultural implements (and espe- cially the Threshing Machines) manufactured here, have wide reputation for excellence. The annual production amounts now to about $10,000. Much less than it was before the general depression in business.

EVERETT.


J. B. & S. D. WILLIAMS .-- This Dry Goods, Grocery and Produce House is the largest and has the most extensive trade of any house of the kind in the coun- ty. The enterprising spirit and indefatigable energy of the members of this firm have instilled a new life into the business interests of Everett.


A. J. NYCUM-Dry Goods and Groceries-Al- though not one of the oldest, this house ranks among the best business houses here. Mr. N., having ample means and a genial, busines-like reputation, is making hosts of friends and driving a brisk trade.


J. J. BARNDOLLAR has had refitted the old J. M. Barndollar house with a large stock of dry goods, gro- ceries, &c., and as the many friends of the old firm still patronize him, it is not surprising to see this House start off again with a large trade.


F. M. MASTERS-Wholesale and Retail Drug Store. This is one of the largest and most substantial business honses of the kind in Pennsylvania. The pro- prietor is a gentleman who bears an irreproachable moral and business reputation, and has, by honest industry and a liberal share of printers' ink succeeded in building up the largest business of the kind in the county.


P. G. MORGART -- Dry Goods and Groceries -- This house, although but recently established, is fast be- coming one of the substantial houses of the town, and is securing a liberal patronage.
