ERECTION OF CHURCH, 1819.
Announcement of Corner Stone Laying
Friedensbode, Allentown, Pa., April 22, 1819.
The corner-stone of the new Salisbury Church for Lutheran and Reformed congregations will be laid on the coming Ascension Day, May 20th, to which solemn services all the friends of Christianity are cordially invited. Rev. Pomp, of Easton, and Rev. Knoske, of Kutztown, will be present on this occasion, both of whom will preach at the morning and afternoon services.
No strong or spirituous liquors will be permitted on this occasion, as is too often the case.
JOHN BOGERT, PHILIP KLEIN, Building Committee.
Proclamation Read at Corner Stone Laying.
Inasmuch as the Lord desires to dwell where His name is honored, and has promised to be present where two or three are gathered together in His name;
And inasmuch as no congregation can worthily and properly, and with edification conduct divine service without a church building;
And inasmuch as the Union Church in Salisbury Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, has become old and insecure as to make it unsafe to hold services therein, the congregation therefore being compelled to tear down the same;
And having now no suitable building of their own in which religious ser- vices may be held, and yet such building is absolutely necessary to perpetuate our holy religion, especially for the proper hearing of the preached Word, the adminis- tration of the holy sacraments, and the furtherance of our own and our children's salvation;
And since both congregations have resolved to ereet a new church building on the site of the old, it is deemed necessary to proclaim to the world, the pur pose, object and the denominational faith for which this building is erected.
Therefore, we proclaim to the present and future generations, that on this Ascension Day, May the 20th, in the year of our Lord 1819, under the adminis tration of James Monroe, President of the United States, and William Findlay, Governor of the State of Pennsylvania, is laid the corner stone of a German Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Church, and that upon the completion of
54
HISTORY OF JERUSALEM CHURCH, SALISBURY, PA.
this work it shall be dedicated to the triune God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost for all time; and shall be known as Jerusalem Church.
That it is and shall continue to be a Union Church of the Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed denominations, wherein the Gospel of Christ shall be preached and the holy sacraments administered in accord with the teaching of Jesus and the Apostles, a summary of which is contained in our Catechisms, which are herewith put into the corner-stone that future generations may know what our confession of faith is. If hereafter persons should arise, who deny their Lord, despite God's Word and the Sacraments and their saving truths, we call heaven and earth to witness, that we are free from all blame. The building which we here erect shall be our witness that we revere an evanglical Christianity and desire its furtherance;
That we expect our children and children's children to remain faithful to their church ;
That here the aged and the young shall be awakened, encouraged, comforted and fitted for eternity. With such a desire and purpose we can confidently look to God and declare with Jacob: "This stone which we have set for a pillar shall become God's house, a place where He will reveal Himself."
Given in Salisbury this 20th day of May, in the year of our Lord 1819, and in the 43rd year of the Independence of the United States, and subscribed to by the Elders, Deacons and the Building Committee of both congregations, together with the respective pastors.
Pastors : HEINRICH G. STECHER, DANIEL ZELLER. Assisting Clergymen : JOHANNES KNOSKE, THOMAS POMP.
Elders :
DANIEL DESHLER, MARTIN LAZARUS, JOHANNES MARKS, ADAM LAUTENSCHLAGER. Deacons : HERMAN MOUR, FRIEDERICH SCHAFFER, HEINRICH DIEFENDERPER, JOHN RIPPER.
Building Committee : PHILIP KLINE, JOHANNUS BOGERT.
And inasmuch as God is a God of order, and desires it especially in the con- duct of divine service; and because Christian brotherly love and unity between two congregations may easily be broken, unless bound by some external order and discipline; therefore we have chosen the undersigned persons, who have formulated the following rules, which we have received and adopted as the rules for the two congregations:
55
ERECTION OF CHURCH, 1819
FIRST :- On the day the church is dedicated, the Building Committee shall have the right to say how the members of the congregation shall be seated; an order that shall be observed by the vestry, and shall continue until a majority of the voting members shall decide otherwise.
SECOND :- If a vacancy in the pastorate of either congregation occurs, it shall be the duty of the vestry, to meet with the vestry of the other congregations forming the charge if they be so agreed, and eleet a pastor, and if he shall re- ceive two-thirds of the votes cast, the vestry shall accept him. If, however, this fails they shall call a congregational meeting when by ballot a minister or pastor shall be elected: And if he receive a majority of the votes cast, the vestry shall accept him, provided that if at any time said pastor is disposed to leave the charge, he shall give three months' notice of such intention. At such an election, how- ever, the Lutherans shall not have the right to vote for a Reformed pastor, nor shall the Reformed have the right to vote for a Lutheran pastor. Nor shall any one not a member of the congregation have the right to vote: namely, no un- baptized and unconfirmed person, nor one who is not a communicant member.
THIRD :- If the pastor or minister does not preach the pure Gospel, or neg- lects his official duties, or leads a wicked life, he shall be admonished by the vestry, and if that does not suffice, he shall then be aceused before his other con- gregations, and if a majority of the vestry in the charge decides against him, then shall the congregation meet at an appointed time to determine the case. If a majority of the members comprising the parish shall vote against him, he shall resign. However, he must have received three months' notice to that effeet.
FOURTH :- The joint vestry shall consist of four (4) Elders and four (4) Deacons. In November of each year one Elder and one Deacon out of each con- gregation shall be elected by ballot. The term of office is two years. The Re- formed shall not vote to elect a Lutheran vestry ; nor shall the Lutherans par- ticipate in selecting a Reformed vestry.
FirTH :- If any church officer willfully transgresses any of these rules, or leads an openly wieked life, he shall be immediately removed from office, and another elected in his place.
SIXTH :- The joint vestry shall elect a Treasurer every two years whose duty it shall be to keep an account of all monies received from the Deacons, and when- ever requested by them, to hand over both the account book and the money. He shall be elected alternately from the Reformed and Lutheran congregations.
SEVENTH :- The annual accounting shall be held on the fourth Saturday in December. The Elders shall examine the accounts of the Deacons, and the bal- ance handed to the Treasurer.
EIGHTH :- The joint vestry shall have the right to use money in the treasury for the following purposes: The purchase of ehnreh furniture and supplies; the keeping in repair of the church building, the school-house, and the graveyard; and the defraying of the expenses of the delegates to Synod.
56
HISTORY OF JERUSALEM CHURCH, SALISBURY, PA.
NINTH :- Sixty days before the Pastor's and the Organist's salary is due, the announcement shall be made to the congregations that on a special day the Deacons will receive money in payment of the Pastor's and Organist's salary.
TENTH :- These rules shall be read annually to the congregations. In the name of the congregations,
