LONGEST IN THE WAR.
The soldier who served longest in the war was Samuel Miller, of Sunbury. He eulisted in company I, Fourteenth Pennsylvania Volunteers, for three months; served four years and four months in company C, Forty-seventh Pennsylvania Volunteers. He then remained at home about two months, and enlisted in company I, Thirteenth United States infantry ; served a year iu this, when it was consolidated with the Thirty-first United States infantry ; served in the Thirty-first United States infantry two years. The Thirty-Grst and Twenty-second were then consolidated. He served three years in the Twenty-second regiment, and was then honorably discharged for disability arising from hard service, baving served in the army over ten years. While in the Indian wars, after the close of the Rebellion, he shot and killed an Indiun chief, thus saving the life of Dr. J. P. Wright, who, out of gratitude, gives Samuel a bounty of ten dollars per month. He was a brave, faithful soldier.
THE FIRST COMPANY.
The first company from Sunbury was lettered F, and made part of the 11th regiment under Col. P. Jarrett. It was mustered April 23d, '61. Their record is as follows:

The Eleventh regiment was placed in the Sixth Brigade, under Colonel Abercombie. They did efficient service during their term of enlistment, and were engaged in battle at Falling Waters, Va., on the 2d of July, 1861. In this engagement, Christian Scall, of Captain Bruner's company, was wounded. Their term of service having nearly expired, and their places being unsup- plied by other troops, Gen. Patterson made an earnest appeal for the men to remain a week or ten days over their time. At the command, "Shoulder arms," every musket went up with a will, to the great satisfaction of the General, who rode forward and exclaimed: "With you, my brave Blue Jackets, I can hold this place alone." In the special order No. 127, of Gen. Patterson, discharging this regiment, he uses these words: "It gives the Commanding General great satisfaction to say, that the conduct of the regi- ment has merited his highest approbation."

The Forty-seventh regimeut was in eleven engagements, viz: First capture of Fort Finnegan, October 4th, '62; St. John's Bluff, Fla., October 5th, '62; Poentaligo, S. C., October 22d, '62; Saline Cross Roads, La., April 23d, '64; Mansura, La., May 17th, '64; Berrysville, Va., September 5th, '64; Win- chester, Va., September 19th, '64; Fisher's Hill, Va., September 22d, '64; Cedar Creek, Va., October 19th, '64. It also took part iu an expedition to St. John's Bluff, on St. John's River, Fla., in which an innnense amount of stores were captured. In the campaign of 1864, the regiment marched upwards of one thousand miles. It was in five of the Southern States, and made nine voyages on sen. It was the only Pennsylvania regiment that participated in the Red River expedition. The men re-enlisted as veteraas October 13th; 1863, and on the 9th of Jannary, 1866, after a service of four years nnd four months, they were mustered out at Camp Cadwallader.
Colonel Gobin, in his incidents of the war, has this note in reference to a member of company C: "Benjamin F. Walls, of company C, was 65 years old when he eulisted; was a farmor of considerable means from Juniata County. When examined at Harrisburg the surgeon pronounced him too old for the service. 'By the Lord!' exclaimed the Squire, 'I have yet to learn that a man ever becomes too old to serve his country!' He was passed, was made color-sergeant, was wounded severely at Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, but afterwards returned to his regiment and served out his three years."
It is suid of Martin Berger, of this company, that after his capture, and while a prisoner at Salisbury, North Carolina, he burrowed a hole in the ground to protect himself from the weather. He died, and was buried in that same hole.
George C. Watson, of the same company, died at Key West, Florida. He was cared for by the company and a monument worth seventy-five dollars was erected by them to his memory.
The next company from Sunbury was headed by Captain John Buyers. It was partly raised in Luzerne Conuty, and was mustered into the Fifty-eightlı Pennsylvania Volunteers, under Colonel J. Richter Joues, in January and February, 1862, as company I. A regimental organization was effected on the 13th of February, 1862. The regiment re-enlisted, und was 6ually mus- tered out Jaunary 24th, 1866. Moore, in his rebellion record, volume six, says of the Fifty-eighth, " There are thousands at the north who curse the army for inaction, who, if they knew half the brave things done by the men in the Geld, would be shamed to sdence by their deeds of valor. Colonel Jones and his heroes of the Fifty-cigbth Pennsylvania have done some splendid work, and by his vigilance has made the bushwhackers cry for quarter." The cap- tain of company I, John Buyers, was a number-one man, and the com- manding officer when it was mustered out, Captain Heber Painter, was as true a soldier as ever lived. I knew the men of this command while in ser- vice, and can say of them they were good soldiers and never dishonored the fair fame of our town in the annals of the war. Among its best soldiers who deserve honorable mention, were Sergeants William H. Blair aud William B. Martin, Color-Corporal Robert Martin aud others. To this company belongs the honor of first entering the rebel Capital after the surrender, and Robert Martin, of Sunbury, carried the Grst flag into the city of Richmond at the head of our victorious army.

In the summer of 1862, the President made a call for three hundred thou- sand more men, and some of those for nine months. Under this call, T. R. Joues, formerly of Snydertown, and A. N. Brice, of Sunbury, hy authority from Gov. Curtin, at once recruited a company, commencing July 29th, 1862. In the evening of that day, a meeting was held in the old court house, which stood on Market square. It was largely attended, and was very enthusiastic. A strong speech was made by Hon. J. B. Packer in favor of the company. I cannot but refer in this public manner out of common gratitude to the kind- ness of this gentlemmn. When I most needed help he was ready with money and influence, and used both freely in my behalf. He deserves special mention in this particular, because his hand and heart were always open to perform some kind act. The public kuew little of the numberless instances of his generosity. I was also indebted to Hon. Alexander Jordan, my preceptor,
for sterling counsel and valuable aid. Although a Democrat, he was always as ready as any in counseling a patriotic course and in vindienting and main- taining the honor of an assailed country. Age has not dimmed his faculties, deadeued his patriotism, nor lessened his friendship.
We started for Harrisburg, August 9th, 1862, and were mustered in the 14th of August, 1862, moving to the front on the 19th of August, as com- pany C, One Hundred and Thirty-first Pennsylvania Volunteers, under Colonel P. H. Allabach. The regiment, after reaching Washington, D. C., was ordered over into Virginia. It remained there till September 14th, 1862, when it was ordered to move with the army of the Potomac to Antietam, engaging in that whole campaign. After Antietam, it marched through Warrenton to Fredericksburg, and participated in the battle at that place in December, 1862. The number of meo lost there in killed, was twenty-one; wounded, one hundred and thirty-two; missing, twenty-four. Among the killed was Lieutenant, William A. Bruner, formerly of Suobury, and among the wounded were Captain I. B. Davis, of Milton, and Lieutenant J. R. Irwin, of Watsontowo. Among the men killed in my own company was Landis Starner, of Sunbury, as brave a boy as ever went to war. The company also participated in the Buroside muddy march, and in the battle of Chancellorsville. It was highly complimented by General A. A. Hum- phreys when discharged.
At the time of our return home, May 25th, 1863, we were received very kindly by the citizens. A parade was formed of the town council, soldiers of 1812, committee of citizens, a band, discharged soldiers, and fire compa- nies with their old engines of that day, and marched through the streets. A speech of welcome was delivered to us in the square by Hoo. J. B. Packer, after which the company marched to the Central Hotel, where a committee of ladies, Mrs. William L. Dewart, Mrs. L. T. Rohrbach (then Miss Jennie Haas, ) Mrs. C. H. Faust (then Miss Lilah Welker, ) Mrs. Captain Terriogtoo (then Miss Mary Friling,) and Miss Amelia Kich], had prepared a most sumptuous supper. It was heartily eaten, and the boys separated for their homes.
