TWO INTERESTING DOCUMENTS.

.

(From the Cambria Tribune, October 20, 1899.)

E. R. Dunegan, Esq., of St. Augustine, has in his pos- session two receipts which, aside from the fact that they are more than one hundred years old, possess a peculiar interest at this time, inasmuch as they prove that Father Gallitzin was not the first priest to visit the Allegheny mountains, al- though he was the first resident pastor. At the time these receipts were given, Cambria County was yet a part of Bed- ford, one of the original five counties in the State. Mr. Dnn- egan has also a leaf from a memorandum book containing the list of subscriptions for the maintenance of the priest, in which the amounts are set down in pounds and shillings, showing that it must have been of still earlier date. It is so worn with age, however, that the date and a considerable number of the names are now illegible. The receipts re- ferred to were obtained by Mr. Dunegan from Rev. Edmund Burns, the second pastor at St. Augustine, and he prob- ably obtained them from Richard McGuire. They are as follows:

I received from Mrs. Rachel McGuire a dollar for her part of the sum that ought to be spent in buying a horse for the priest serving the parishes of Huntingdon, Sinking Val- ley, Allegheny, Path Valley, etc.

Allegheny, December 15, 1794.

LEWIS SIBOURD, Priest.

I have received from the inhabitants over Allegheny, the sum of sixteen dollars for my maintenance for six months. Allegheny, June 6, 1795.

LEWIS SIBOURD, Priest.

.

PASCHAL COMMUNIONS. PASCHAL CONFESSIONS. CONFIRMATION.

NOTE .--- In an old memorandum book, which the writer found among the personal effects of his deceased father. Father Gallitzin had written down the names of those who fulfilled the precept of Paschal Communion in 1810, and of Paschal Confession in 1811 and 1813, as also the names of those who were confirmed by Bishop Egan in 1811. These names are here copied in alphabetical order, except those on the Confession list of 1813 which is in great measure a ro- duplication of the fist of 1811. In his Confirmation list. Father Galfitzin gives the ages of the persons, especially of the children, confirmed: but the writer has thought it better to add the dates of birth, where such dates could be found among the carly entries in the Register of Baptisms. It was the first time that Confirmation was administered in Western Pennsylvania, and it is to be noted that on that occasion chil. dren of very tender years, even infants a few months ofd. were presented for Confirmation. Thus, of the children con- firmed, six, were born in 1806, seven in 1807, ofeven in 1808, seven in 1809, eleven in 1810, and four in 1811 -the year Con- firmation was administered.

1779

Father Gallitzin having settled at Loretto in 1799, set about building a church; and his own hands, it is said, did much of the work. The building was of logs 25 by 11 foot. In this church, which was called St. Michael's by its founder. on Christmas Day, 1799, mass was first said, and, the build ing soon becoming too small, it was enlarged in 1809, and in 1817 was torn down and a frame structure, to by 80 feet, was erected on the same site. In 1854 the present commodious brick church was dedicated. It is now a matter of regret to many of the people of the congregation that the old church was allowed to fall to ruin, so much so that if had to be torn down in 1891.

Father Gallitzin not only administered spiritually to the wants of the people, but became in fact the founder of a col. ony, nsing for that purpose the large income which he re coived from his father's estates, expending in all $150,002. until the Russian Government saw fit, in Isos, to disinherit him because he was not a member of the Orthodox Greek Catholic Church, the established religion of Russia. It is said that his sister sont him pecuniary aid as long as she lived: nevertheless, he became financially involved by reason of his great outlays in assisting emigrants, building a grist will near Loretto on a small branch of Clearfield Crook and : saw-mil on a larger brauch near Cresson, the damn of which is still in existence and has long impounded the water for the mill of the late B. P. Anderson. When he found that his in heritance was swept away, he who had previously been a giver, and not a receiver, was compelled, by reason of a sense of duty, to appeal to the generosity and charity of Christian people to assist him to pay part of his debt, as shown by the accompanying appeal in his own handwriting, the heading having been recently appended by Father Kittell, the present pastor of St. Michael's congregation.

APPEAL OF FATHER GALLITZIN FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, WRITTEN BY HIS OWN HAND.

LORETTO CENTENARY.

The system of capitalization and division into sentences used is in singular contrast to that of the present day, com- mon as well as proper nouns generally commencing with a capital letter, while the beginning of a sentence with a small letter may also be noted, as likewise the difference in orthog. raphy in the word "expences." The appeal was originally written on both sides of the first leaf of a notebook, but all that was written on the second page and a few words on the lower line following the character &, have been subsequently so completely crossed out by the pen, doubtless by the hand of Father Gallitzin himself, as to be entirely undecipherable to the naked eye.

On the second page are the five contributions, beginning with that of Charles Carroll, of Carrollton, the last of the

signers of the Declaration of Independence, the phrase "oľ Carrollton" being first used when signing the immortal Declaration, which act, had the Revolutionary War proven a. failure, would have cost tho signers their lives. Some one remarked, "There go many," the meaning whereof was that there being many Charles Carrolls, the indentity of the signer would not be known; whereupon Carroll instantly added, "of Carrollton," which he ever afterward retained. Carroll's handwriting in this subscription and also in an indorsement of the worthy motives of the appeal on the third page, shows the tremor of age so much, compared with his autograph to the Declaration of Independence, that it is hardly recogniza- ble as the same.

Of all the remarkable traits in the life of Father Gallitzin, none is more remarkable than the fact that his handwriting never showed the nervousness of age so common to other men, his last entries in the baptismal and marriage registers of the church in March 18440, when he was seventy years of age, being in as clear and legible a hand as his first records in Jannary, 1800.

The person whose name is second on the accompanying list of subscriptions lived in Baltimore, was a member of the well-known Oliver family, and attorney for Father Gallitzin. Baron de Maltitz was Russian Minister to the United States, Jose Silvestre Rebollo filled a similar position for Portugal. and Cardinal Capellari afterward became Pope Gregory XVI. Matthew Carey was an American publisher and anthor, the father of Henry C. Carey, the noted political economist. The next entry, "Cash $20," and the last "Collected along. the Canal below Blairsville, say $370," as may be seen by com- parison, are in Father Gallitzin's handwriting.

In addition to the above, there were many collections, aggregating several thousand dollars, made along the Alle- gheny Portage Railroad, in which lists appear the names of many of the old Irish settlers.

It is somewhat singular that the list of contributors is remarkable for the absence of the names of those for whom Father Gallitzin had incurred the debt he was heroically

endeavoring to pay the pioneers of Allegheny Township. It may be that they contributed their mite in another way, perhaps by collections in the church, which were not entered in this little book, or perhaps they were paying for the land on which they had settled.

Doubtless, in the life of Father Gallitzin. there was nothing so humiliating as to be compelled to appeal to the generosity of Christian people, for of all men there is none whose name is farther removed from a suspicion of cupidity than his.

Abont the unselfishness of his motives in becoming an ecclesiastic there cannot be the slightest doubt. for in the history of the world there is perhaps not another instance of such self-sacrificing devotion of a person in high position

INDDRABMENT OF FATHER CALLITZIN'S APPPAL BY ONE OF THE SHINERY OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.

: to what he believed to be his duty; certainly none to surpass that of the apostle of the Alleghenies.

Kings, tired of the cares of State, some doubtless through remorse, but nearly all of them disgusted with perplexities, have laid down the scepter and entered monasteries; but it is doubtful if there is another instance of a man on the thresh- old of life surrendering such flattering prospects of the world to follow the dictates of his conscience, and immune himself for a lifetime in the solitudes of an almost inaccessible wilder- ness. His appeal to those who knew him did not need the indorsement of the first citizen and last signier of the Declar- aration of Independence, which was given.

It may not be generally known that Captain Michael Me- Guire, the founder of the McGuire Settlement, had been dead six years before Father Gallitzin settled at Loretto.

Although Father Gallitzin at an early day had an assist- ant in the person of Rev. Terence MeGirr, the Baptismal Register and the Record of Marriages were kept by himself. The first baptism recorded is in April, 1809, the child having been Joseph, son of Charles and Mary Bradley. This entry, which is in Latin, is signed Demetrins Augustinus do Gallit- zin, alias Angustinus Smith, Parochus.

Father Gallitzin's entries of baptisms differed from those of the present day in that the surname given both parents was that of the father, except in cases where the parents were not married; so one can tell by looking at the baptismal register kept by Father Gallitzin whether or not a person whose name is recorded therein was born in lawful wedlock. Now the maiden surname of the mother is given in all cases.

It is probable that there never existed in Western Pen- sylvania another community of equal size in which there were fewer illegitimate births than in the Loretto congregation during the time of Father Gallitzin's pastorate.
