The American David
The Iron Rose Bible Class has always been very fond of studying the life of David and the teacher had always desired a satisfactory statue of David. These statues are all made in France. When the franc got down to three cents Mr. Ridgway thought if he was ever going to get a statue of David then was the time.
Mr. Ridgway had been reading the "Life and Letters of Walter Page," the Ambassador to Great Britain, in which the Ambassador said the Embassy was often called on to execute all sorts of commissions for Americans, and that they were glad to be able to do so. In consequence of this Mr. Ridgway wrote to Ambassador Hon. Myron T. Herrick at Paris, stating what he desired in the way of a statue of David, and asking Ambassador Herrick if he would kindly hand the letter to some dealer in bronzes and have this dealer send photo- graphs and prices. Mr. Ridgway added that the only sculptors he knew who had made statues of David were Mercie and Gaudez.
In reply to this request Mr. Ridgway received the following letter from America's greatest sculptor, Mr. Paul W. Bartlett:
16 Rue du Commandeur Paris, April 4th, 1924
MY DEAR MR. RIDGWAY:
Our distinguished Ambassador, Mr. Myron T. Herrick, has asked me to answer your letter of March 7th concerning a statue in bronze of David.
The best statues of David in Paris are by Mercie. The one by Gaudez which you mention WAS MADE BY MYSELF WHEN AS A BOY I WAS WORKING IN GAUDEZ'S STUDIO!
I do not know whether they are still on the market.
Believe me very sincerely yours,
PAUL W. BARTLETT, Sculptor
Mr. Bartlett was the sculptor who made the statues for the New York Public Library, the Houses of Congress in Washington, Lafayette in Paris, and the statue of Blackstone which the American Bar Association gave to the English Bar.
As soon as Mr. Ridgway heard that the statue of Gaudez had been made by this great sculptor he got in touch with Mr. Joseph Mccutcheon, the foreign buyer for the great Department Store of Strawbridge & Clothier in Philadelphia, who was about starting for Europe. Mr. Ridgway instructed Mr. Mccutcheon to spare no pains and expense in getting this Bartlett David.
Mr. Mccutcheon tried all the dealers in such things, and it was only when he got the Guild of Bronze Manufacturers of France, and they scoured the country over, that this statue by Bartlett, with Gaudez's name on it, was found. In the face of Mr. Bartlett's letter the United States Government admitted the statue free of duty, since it was made by an American citizen.
On the strength of the statue of David a very pleasant correspondence grew up between Mr. Ridgway and Mr. Bartlett, and on his next visit to America Mr. Bartlett had planned to visit Mr. Ridgway. Mr. Bartlett was a fisherman and while fishing one day he got a hook in his hand and being neglected an infection started which resulted in Mr. Bartlett's prema- ture death.
[ Seventy-two ]
Mr. Bartlett had the highest honors France could confer upon an artist. He was Commander of the Legion of Honor, with other titles, one of the very few foreigners who ever received that honor.
In a biographical sketch of Mr. Bartlett it is stated that he was a born sculptor, having produced a prize-winning statue of his grandmother when he was only 12 years of age.
Mr. Bartlett's idea of David is an American's idea of David. Mr. Ridgway, in ex- hibiting the statue to the Iron Rose Bible Class, called attention to the fact that it was the World's Series, a tied score, three men on bases, three balls and two strikes and the "King of Swat" at the bat, and, with the bleachers packed and the crowd intense, something had to be done. Imagine a baseball in the hand instead of the sling, and notice how skillfully the sculptor has shown the tightening of the muscles of that wonderful right arm.
The statue is about 30" high and of a dark reddish brown, just such a color as would be painted upon a shepherd boy who spent his days under a tropical sun.
