Thus to find an even number in Union Street, look under letter U in the lift, and Union Street will be found to begin from the weft fide of Front ftreet be- tween Spruce and Pine ftreets, and extending E. & W. acrofs three fquares, to terminate at the Eaft fide of Fourth ftreet ; now if you come to any interfection of Union ftreet you examine the firft number you fee ; you know by the even number, that you are to feek on the South fide, by the index hand the progrefs of the num- bers, and by the firft number you meet, whether you are to go Weftward for a higher or Eaftward for a fower number.
The like modes ferve for the leffer ftreets, &c. in a N. & S. direction, except that the odd numbers are on the Eaft and the even numbers on the Weft fide.
The city, from Cedar to Vine ftreet, contains twelve wards, the Liberties on the North of the city two, the diftrict of Southwark two, and Paffyunk and Moya- menfing each one.
All the improvements which extend to the North from Vine ftreet, are-called the Northern Liberties, and thofe to the South from Cedar ftreet, are part of the diftrict of Southwark.
