INSTRUCTIVE MAXIMS,
POLITICAL AND MORAL.
The law is not made for the good.
We ought to regulate our lives so as not to become terrible to our inferiors nor contemptible to our supe- riois.
Power must be used moderately, to make it lasting.

VENUS Q will be morning Star, until the 17th. of the 3d. Month, (March) then evening Star, until the end of the year.
To know when to yield, in government, is at least as necessary as to know when to lose in trade ; and he who cannot do the first, is so little likely to govern a nation well, that it is more than probable he would go- vern a shop ill.
Laws are like cobwebs, where the small flies are caught, but the great ones break through.
Prefer labour before idleness, unless you esteem rust more than brightness.

Neither Montagne in writing his Essays, nor Des Cartes in building new worlds, nor Burnet in framing an antediluvian earth, no, nor Newton in discovering and establishing the true laws of nature on experiment and sublime geometry, felt more intellectual joys than he fells who is a real Patriot, who bends all the force of his understanding, and directs all his thoughts and acti- ons to the good of his country.

The laughers are for those who have most wit, and the ferious part of mankind, for those who have most reason on thier side.
One gains nothing by lying, but the advantage of not being credited when he speaks the truth.
Power must be used moderately, to make it lasting.

There is a plain and real difference between jealousy and distrust. Men may be jealous on account of their liberties, even when they have no immediate distrust that the persons who govern design to invade them.
It would be highly unjust to impute the scurrilities of scuirilous authors to any prompter, because they have in themselves all that is necessary to constitute a scold ; ill manners, impudence, a foul mouth, antu a fouler heart.

Liberty is, to the collective body, what health is to every individual body. Without health, no pleasure Can be tasted by man ; without liberty, no happiness can be enjoyed by society.
That commonwealth is best constructed, in which the citizens, without envy or sedition, strive who shall outvie the rest in the possession of virtue.
States are on the confines of ruin when no distinction is made between the good and the bad.
A great talker is seldom a wise man.

A vine bears three grapes ; the first of pleasure, the second of drunkenness, and the third of repentance.
Nothing is so precious as time, and those who mis; pend it are the greatest of all prodigals.
Those who exercise continency and frugality have a higher relish of pleasure, and are less affected with pain, than those who are the most diligent and assidu- ous in the pursuit of delights and indulgences.
Man is deficient in nothing so much as time.

Faction is to party what the superlative is to the posi- tive : party is a political evil, and faction is the worst of all evils.
A life dedicated to the service of our country admits the full use, and no life should admit the abuse, of pleasures : the least are consistent with a constant dis- charge of our public duty, the greatest arise from it.
Truth lies within a little and certain compass, but error is immense.

Our's does all that a constitution can do, all that can be done by legal provision, to secure the interests of the people, by maintaining the integrity of their trustees ; and, lest all this should fail, it gives frequent opportu- nities to the people to secure their interest themselves, by mending thier choice.
A flow of words is no proof of wisdom, nor any evi- dence of just sentiment.

Wise men are able to do a great deal with a little : every knave or fool is ready to do a little with a great Geal.
The merit of preserving our country from beggary, is little inferior to that of preserving it from slavery.
Regret your separation from your friends , but regret it like a man who deserves to be theirs. This is strength, not weakness of mind ; or is virtue, not vice.

The citizens of Rome placed the images of their an- cestors in the vestibules of their houses ; so that, when- ever they went in or out, these venerable bustos met their eyes, and recalled the glorious actions of the dead to fire the living, to excite them to imitate, and to emu- late their great fore fathers. The success answered the design. The virtue of one generation was transfu- sed, by the magic of example, into several ; and a spirit of heroism was maintained through many ages of the commonwealth.
