E. charch; Trustee of the Wyoming Seminary ; President of the Cemetery Association ; Director of the People's Savings Bank of Pittston, and several other associations.
GEORGE B. DILLEY, born in 1850 at Ashley, Pa,; moved to Illinois and went to school in that State; came to Kingston in 1870, followed carpentering ; insurance agent ; moved to Forty Fort in 1883; elected Justice of the Peace, and in 1887 Burgess; re-elected 1841.
ADAM HEISZ, born at Bowman's Creek, Pa., 1846; began farming for himself 1870; in 1873 bought the farm that he now occupies at Forty Fort and built his present residence ; Town Councilman for three years; married Mrs. Eliza Jackson, at Forty Fort, 1866.
REV. DAVID L. DAVIS was born in Wales IS49; finished his education in Bangdor Seminary, Mar; came to this country 1863; located at Pittston ; Carbondale ; in 1890 at Edwardsville, Pa., his present charge; President of the Edwardsville School Board 1892; its first Secretary.
SYLVESTER PAUKSZTIS was born 1859; came to this country 1871 ; was a farmer ; 1889 built his present large business block in Edwardsville ; is a merchant ; President and Treas- urer of a lodge of men of his nationality.

JAMES D. EDWARDS was born in Scranton, Pa., 1862; lived in Plymouth and later in . Kingston ; educated in the public schools ; entered the office of the Kingston Coal Co. 1879 and is now paymaster ; has been school director and filled other public offices in Edwards- ville.
FREDERICK WILLIAMS was born in England 1848; educated in the Parochial schools : lived in Williamstown, Pa., and followed music as a profession ; worked as a miner in Ply- mouth, Pa .; Justice of the Peace of Edwardsville since 1884; is a writer of verse ; "In- gratitude, or Old Sport and His Master," appeared in the Boston Pilot.
REV. MINER SWALLOW, born at Plainsville, Pa., 1815; educated in the public schools ; joined the Wyoming Conference 1854 ; after serving many circuits was superannuated for one year; the tract agent for two years, then returned to the work; supernumerary relations in 1873; lives in Kingston ; Mrs. Swallow, nec Mary Elizabeth Dodson, a prominent Christian woman, died 1893.
ALONZO WINFIELD HOUSER, born at Huntsville, Pa., 1851 ; educated in Wilkes-Barre; learned the trade of blacksmithing ; employed by Buck Mountain Coal Co., and at Chester, and later at Kingston ; is now at the Pettibone mines at Dorranceton, with the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Coal Co .; patented a double-box slate-picker, also a safety block ; is Councilman of Edwardsville ; was an Elder in the Bennet Presbyterian church at Luzerne in 1875.

GEORGE W. CARR, born in England 1848; went to school ; came to this country 1870; located in Kingston ; is a professional gardener ; has the only hothouse in Kingston ; has . been a Mason for fifteen years.
GEORGE NESBITT, born in Jackson township, - Pa., 1860; farmed and went to school until 1884; then established a mercantile business in Kingston with Mr. Rogers; two years later bought out his partner; member of the Town Council.
WILLIAM F. CHURCH, born in Kingston, Pa .; son of Addison, one of the old merchants of Kingston ; educated in the Wyoming Seminary ; 1867 went in the drug store of Abram Goodwin ; purchased the business 1883; 1889 removed across the street ; married Miss Annie H. Corss 1876; postmaster of Kingston 1878 to '82; Ruling Elder in the Presby- terian church ; and a Mason.
STEPHEN H. PETTIBONE, born in Forty Fort ; educated at Wyoming Seminary ; lived and farmed in Columbia county for five years; returned 1871 ; moved in his present resi- dence on Wyoming avenue, Forty Fort, 1881 ; married Lucinda C. Pettibone 1854; they have six children.
HARVEY YEAGER, born in Columbia county 1847 ; educated in Danville, Pa .; in busi- ness in that town for three years ; in 1875 came to Plymouth, and established the Opera House store ; 1889 purchased the Valley Co. store at Forty Fort, where he is at the present time; married Margaret E. R. Smith, daughter of John B. Smith, 1871 ; School Director of Forty Fort for three Years.
REV. WILLIAM T. GIBBONS, born in Chester county, Pa., 1859; educated at Bucknell University and graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary 1890; pastor of the Stella Presbyterian chapel, Forty Fort, Pa.

'JACOB SHARP PETTIBONE, born on the old farm at Forty Fort 1821; educated in the Kingston Academy ; is a farmer ; Councilman and Treasurer ever since the borough was ·organized.
JOHN BIERMAN, born in Narrowsburg, N. Y., 1849 ; went to school in that place ; went with the L. V. and E. & W. R. R. 1860; in 1866 with the D., L. & W. R. R., Bloomsburg division ; served in several positions, and was passenger conductor for four years ; accepted a position with the West Side Electric Road I891, where he is now employed.
P. A. A. REAVES, born in the Mohawk Valley July 4, 1825 ; cducated at the Amster- dam Academy ; came to Carbondale in his sixteenth year; with the D. & H. Co. in the machine shop for five years ; 1850 took charge of pumps and mine machinery force of the Pennsylvania Coal Co .; a shaft sunk then one hundred feet was the first shaft in the valley; changed the chain for hoisting to wire rope; 1852 made iron safety carriages; made the plans and drawings for the Pennsylvania Coal Co. for fifteen years ; his health failed and he went south ; on his return went to work for the D., L. & W. R. R., in the minc machinery department at Kingston.
CHRISTOPHER HIMMLER was born August 7th, 1844, in Cumberland city, Md .; went to school in that city; on his father's farm ; in 1865 went with the D., L. & W. R. R., and with the exception of three years spent farming has been with that company until the present time ; an engincer for twenty years ; was in the late war ; a Mason and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers; married Miss Ada Lozo 1873.
CHARLES WESLEY MCALARNEY, ESQ., born at Mifflinburg, Pa., 1847 ; educated at the Mifflinburg Academy ; read law with his brother, J. C., at Harrisburg; admitted to the Dauphin County Bar 1873; to the Luzerne Bar 1876; located in Plymouth, where he is practicing his profession.
WILLIAM DAVIS, born in Schuylkill county, Pa .; educated in that county; kept books in Scranton for Conly & McAndrews and Thomas Egnan & Co .; served in the late war, first in Schooley's Battery from Pittston. then in the 9th, 18th and 22d Army Corps ; Cap- tain Co. C, 112th Regiment, 9th Army Corps ; removed to Plymouth, Pa., 1868; estab- lished his present business of general merchandise; member of the School Board for twelve continuous years and has been re-elected ; member of Plymouth Lodge, 332, A. Y. M., since 1870.
ERASTUS MARION SMITHI, born at Old Forge, Pa., 1839; educated at the Wyoming Seminary ; farmed until his twenty-fourth year and then went to Janesville, Wis., and con- ducted the European Hotel ; removed to Scranton and was Street Commissioner for four years ; went to Florida ; was one of the largest growers of fruit in the State; in tire real estate business in Scranton ; conducts the Frantz House at Plymouth.
JOHN E. MILLER, born in Newark, N. J., 1856; came to Wilkes-Barre 1865 and attended school ; a marble cutter; established a marble yard in Kingston 1884; removed to Wilkes-Barre to his present location, 133 S. Main street, 1889; Mr. A. C. Laycock be- came his partner 1891 ; this firm does the largest business of any in the valley in its line.
JOHN SCHNEIDER, born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., 1865; went to the German Catholic school ; worked in the mines; clerk for Jacob Reuffer ; in 1891 became proprietor of the hotel 52 South Main street ; member of the Sangerbund.

Hall ; solicitor and collector for Robert Baur; 1891 passenger and freight agent for the C. R. R. of N. J., office on Public Square ; member of the Sangerbund.
FRANK JACOBS, born in Germany 1856; educated in that country; came to this country 1880; Financial Secretary of the Sangerbund of Pennsylvania, and Schuetzen Verein, B. A., Washington B. A., Constatter Volksfest Verein, Liedertafel, Sangerbund societies ; is now located at 112 South Washington street.
H. S. CARKHIUFF, born in New York 1864; educated in the Clinton Academy; learned the art of ladies' hair dressing in New York city, where he spent five years ; established his present business in Wilkes-Barre 1888 ; he has elegant rooms in the Welles Building; las made a special study of scalp diseases.
JAMES P. HUSTEAD was born in Ross township, Pa., 1862; educated at Huntington Academy ; taught since 1881 ; in Plymouth three years, eight years at Edwardsdale; in 1888 elected principal ; now principal for Plymouth township; married Miss Nellie Davenport 1885 ; his father was in the late war and died in the hospital at Philadelphia.
ALFRED J. RINGSTRON was born in Sweden 1853 ; came to this country 1872; in the public school until his sixteenth year; learned telegraphing in the government school ; farmed in Lehigh county ; moved to Pittston and was employed as an engineer; with the Electric road at the present time ; school director in Edwardsville.
DAVID J. THOMAS was born in Carmarthanshire, South Wales, 1852; came to Oly- phant, Pa., in his youth; educated in the public schools; came to Kingston 1880 and since that time has been employed as agent for Jones Brothers and Grand Union Tea Company. Active in the Welsh Congregational church; has been School Director for two terms of Edwardsville Borough ; Sunday School superintendent ; deacon of his church ; was active in the erection of the fine school building in that borough ; active in the Knights of Pythias as Past Chancellor.
DANIEL S. EDWARDS was born in Pottsville, Pa., 1857 ; moved to Scranton 1858; to Plymouth 1866; to Edwardsville 1873; educated in the public schools; followed carpenter- ing for nineteen years and in that capacity is now employed by the Kingston Coal Co .; Chief of the Edwardsville Fire Department for the last three years ; member of the Odd Fellows and other societies.
THOMAS JEROME CHASE, born at Benton, Luzerne, now Lackawanna county, Pa., May 26, 1844 ; brought up on a farm ; educated in common schools and Madison Academy at Waverly, Pa .; served nine months as a soldier in 1862 and 1863, in the 132d Regiment, Pa. Vols .; studied law in the office of Winton and Chase at Scranton ; admitted to the Luzerne Bar in November, 1866.
HENRY CLAY PERRY was born in Berks county, Pa., 1830; went to school in Schuyl- kill county ; has been a builder in Wilkes-Barre from 1851 to 1886; has retired from active business. Mr. Perry is a connoisseur in violins ; has made many valuable instruments.
GEORGE W. COOLBAUGHI, born in Wyoming County, Pa., 1854; educated in public schools; has served on the staff of several papers in this section ; editor and proprietor of the Telegram; is in the real estate business.

GEORGE H. KIRWAN, M. D., born of Irish parents in Hawley, Wayne county, Pa .; was educated in the public schools of Wilkes-Barre, and Wyoming Seminary, from which he graduated with a thorough English and a rudimentary classical education. He began the study of medicine in 1878 and graduated with honors from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, medical department, Columbia College, New York, May 16th, 1882, since which time he has very successfully practiced his profession in Wilkes-Barre. Doctor Kirwan is . a gentleman of liberal views and refined manners, and possesses recognized ability in his profession, especially as a surgeon, and has attained some distinction as an expert witness in court. He is a Catholic in religion and a Democrat in politics, and is a member of Luzerne County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Lehigh Valley Medical Society, American Medical Association ; attending physician and surgeon Luzerne county prison, &c.
GRANVILLE T. MATLACK, M. D., born at Downingtown, Chester county, Pa., February 5, 1862 ; graduated at Chester Valley Academy, at Downingtown, Pa., spring of 1879; graduated in medicine at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, spring of 1884; ap- pointed resident physician of Wilkes-Barre City Hospital during 1884-'85; afterwards located at Miner's Mills, Pa., and practiced medicine there until the summer of 1891, when he moved to 155 South Washington street, Wilkes-Barre, where he is at present a practicing physician ; a member of the Luzerne County Medical Society, also a member of the Lehigh Valley Medical Society ; married Clara R. Courtright, of Clark's Green, Pa., April 5, 1888.
LOUISE M. STOECKEL, M. D., was born in Bath, Northampton county, Pa. In early childhood her parents removed to Wilkes-Barre, and later on to Dallas, Pa. She taught Gen. Paul Oliver's private school at Laurel Run for several years, and in 1886 entered the Woman's Medical College of Pa., graduating in 1890. For a short time practiced her pro- fession in Dallas, and in the fall of '90 opened an office in Wilkes-Barre, where she is at present located at 26 North Franklin street. Dr. Stoeckel is a member of Luzerne County Medical Society, of the Lehigh Valley Medical Association, of the State Medical Society and of the American Medical Association.
DR. MARIS GIBSON, M. D., born October 31, 1841, at Buckingham, Bucks county, Pa. Education finished at Madison University, New York State. Graduate of University of Pennsylvania in medicine, 1883. Located in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., at 185 South Washington street, January, 1884. Member of the Luzerne County Medical Society; Secretary of same now and for the last four years. Member of American Medical Association.
J. FRANKLIN HILL, M. D., was born in Salem township, this State, February 13th, 1856; educated at Wyoming Seminary, State Normal School and New Columbus ; read medicine with Dr. R. H. Little, of Berwick, Pa .; graduated from the Jefferson Medical College in the class of '85 ; located in Nanticoke, Pa., where he is now practicing his pro- fession ; is also engaged in the drug business; married Miss Millie F. Hoover, Wilkes- Barre, Pa., October 5, 1892.
DOUGLAS S. KISTI.ER, M. D., born July 19, 1870, in Lynn township, Lehigh county, Pa .; graduate of Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, May 12th, 1893 ; located at 213 South Main street, Wilkes-Barre; member of Wyoming Homoeopathic Medical Society ; diseases of women and children a specialty ; hospital experience at the Hahnemann Hospital, Philadelphia.

WILLIAM PETTY, M. D., was born in Hanover township in 1861 ; educated in the New Columbus Normal School ; graduate of Long Island College Hospital, Brooklyn, N. Y., 1886; located in Wikes-Barre, where he has been in continuous practice ever since ; . bought out Stark's drug store 1887 and removed to his present location, Hanover street.
D. W. DODSON, M. D., was born in Luzerne county, 1852; received his preliminary education at the New Columbus Academy ; graduated from the Jefferson College, Phila- - delphia, in the class of 1888 ; located in Nanticoke, Pa, where he is now practicing his pro- fession ; married Miss Anna Vincent, of Ashley, ISgo.
J. ANSON SINGER, M. D., was born April 12, 1858, at Stroudsburg, Pa .; attended public schools and Collegiate Institute of above named place, also Orangeville Academy ; gradu- ated from the University of the City of New York on the 13th day of March, 1883 ; began the practice of his profession at Brodheadsville, Pa., the same year and continued there until July Ist, 1891, when he moved to Forty Fort, Pa., his present honte.
SARAH J. COE, M. D., born of New England parents in Genesee county, New York State ; educated and graduated at Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, Lima, N. Y., after which she studied art in its various branches. For five years she was a teacher of Art and Modern Languages in Seminaries in Wisconsin and Michigan. By invitation of the Art Committee of Wisconsin she and her pupils had pictures on exhibition at the Centennial in Phila- delphia. She graduated in medicine from Michigan University and after a year in Hospital and Dispensary work located in Wilkes-Barre in September, 1879. Besides having held the several offices connected with the Homoeopathic Medical Society of Northern Penn- sylvania, Dr. Coe has been greatly honored in the State Homoeopathic Medical Society, since 1883 having been called to serve as Censor for three years, Chairman of Bureau twice, Second Vice President and now First Vice President. She is also State Secretary of the Medical Department of the Queen Isabella Association in connection with the World's Fair. Besides medical work she finds some time for religious work in Sunday School and the Young Women's Christian Association, holding the position of President of this society.
T. W. THOMAS, Dentist, was born in Carmarthanshire, South Wales, January 29th, 1861 ; came to this city with his parents in 1869; attended public schools and Wyoming Seminary ; employed in shipping coal for L. V. Coal Co .; graduated at Pennsylvania Col- lege of Dental Surgery in 1886; has practiced in Wilkes-Barre since that time.
T. AUBREY POWELL, Dentist, was born at Upper Lehigh, Luzerne county, Pa., March Ist, 1867. Engaged in the furniture and carpet trade at Hazleton, Pa. Engaged in the study of dentistry and graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery in Philadelphia 1890; then located in Welles Building, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
HUGH JONES was born in Wales in 1837 ; after going to school learned the carpenter trade ; came to this country 1872; established his present business in Edwardsville of undertaking ; was the first Assessor of the borough; one term as Town Councilman : is Assessor at the present time; Trustee and Treasurer of the Welsh Congregational church of the borough since 1889.

JOSIAH LEWIS, JR., a resident of Wilkes-Barre, was born in Kingston on the 18th day of November, 1815. He was a man of genial disposition, of energy, and of the strictest integrity. He was considered one of the substantial business men of that community. His father, Josiah Lewis, who died in Lackawanna township on the 2nd of May, 1851, was the only son of the Hon William Lewis, one of the most distinguished Philadelphia lawyers of his day, who was appointed by the President, George Washington, a Judge of the United States District Court in 1791. Mrs. 'Lewis' mother was Margaret, daughter of Colonel Sharp Delaney, one of the early patriotic Irish settlers in Philadelphia. He is a descendant of Ralph Lewis, who emigrated with his wife, Mary, from the Parish of Illam, in Glamorganshire, Wales, in 1683, and settled in Haverford township, Chester county, Pa. Mr. Lewis was married to Arabella D)., daughter of George Chahoon, on the 12th day of September, 1843. His death occurred on the IIth of July, 1890. Surviving him his widow, son George, Mary C., wife of L. H. Gross, of Allentown.
ISAAC LIVINGSTON was born at Elsdorf, Prussia, twenty miles from Cologne, in Novem- ber, 1827; educated in his native town; came to this country in 1848; lived in Norwalk, Conn., until 1853, and was engaged in the building business; lived there when the great railroad accident happened on the bridge; came to Wilkes-Barre 1853; married to the widow of Lewis Reese, who was murdered by Reese Evans in Wilkes-Barre, 1854; carried on the clothing and shoe business; sold out the shoe business in 1888; lost his wife 1888; sold out his clothing business in 1891 ; lost his oldest son, M. J. Livingston, the same year ; administrator and guardian for numerous estates, and has dealt extensively in real estate ; assessor for ten years-appointed by the Hon. Judge Harding; has taken great interest in public improvements and in politics ; member of the Board of Trade.
WILLIAM N. JENNINGS was born in Kingston 1829, in the old Hoyt house at what was Tuttletown ; educated at Wyoming Seminary ; worked at nearly every occupation that was available; went across the continent to California in 1850, and came home by way of water; engaged in the business of rafting lumber down the Susquehanna ; engaged in man- ufacturing lumber at Jenningsville, Pa., 1852, and still retains an interest ; removed to West Pittston 1857 and engaged in the lumber and grain business; moved to Wilkes-Barre 1865 and conducted his former lines of business ; moved to the city of Bradford, Mckean county, 1878, and in 1883 removed to Wilkes-Barre; his sons are in the lumbering business ; married Miss Sarah Hicks 1853. Mr. Jennings devotes some attention to literary com- position.
HON. CHARLES A. MINER was born in Plains township, Pennsylvania, in 1830. Son of Robert Miner; educated in Wilkes-Barre and West Chester. Mr. Miner is widely known in the business and political interests of this section. He served three terms in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives ; represented the State as Honorary Commissioner at the World's Exhibition at Vienna, Austria. President of the Street Railway Company, Director of the Wyoming National Bank and People's Bank, member of the City Council, owner of Miner's mills.
RICHARD E. S. MIALL was born in Plymouth, England, in 1839, and emigrated in 1861 ; carpenter and builder, and taxidermist ; served in the British Navy for four years ; shipmate with the present Duke of Edinburg; was in Mexico during the War of the Rebellion ; has been in nearly all the great harbors of the world.

JOHN BEILBY WOOD was a son of Moses Wood, a farmer, who was also interested in mining and shipping coal. He donated the land on which the Central M. E. church of Woodville was built ; he died 1853; his father was Joseph Wood, of England, and his father was Michael Wood ; Moses Wood. the grandfather of John G. Wood, owned three hundred acres of land and one-third of Wilkes-Barre is on the tract. Joseph Beilby Wood was born in England 1804; was engaged in the mercantile business in this city for many years; in 1876 he with L. D. Flanagan established the banking house of J. B. Wood, Flan- agan & Co., and closed in good standing after successfully operating for ten years. Mr. Wood died April 18, 1872; his wife was Sarah Gore, a daughter of John Gore, youngest sister of Geo. W. Ross, and of Peru and General Ross, who were slain in the battle and Massacre of Wyoming. She was born 1805 and died December 21, 1886.
