CENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION
Letter from Rev. John T. Oxtoby, D. D.
To the Presbyterian Church and congregation of North East. Pa .:
Dear Friends-I hope that many of you will regret my in- ability to be with you on this anniversary day; but none of you will regret it as much as I do. I had hoped all along that I might be able to be with you, but as I cannot, I will send a letter.
I might send you a sermon, for the occasion would warrant a good one; I might send you an address, and the occasion is worthy of a fine one; certainly a hundred years of life and work for Christ in a church of such influence would be worthy of any amount of work. But it would not be in accord with my feel- ings to send a sermon or address. So I simply send a few words from my heart.
Certainly my heart will never go out to any church as to that of North East. And that for several reasons, among which I may mention that to your church I came in the flush of youth, when all is bright. I was full of hope that God would bless me in my work, and ich sure that the members of the church and con- gregation would do all in their power to help me to realize my hope of seeing nich fruit of my labor. . Nor were these hopes unfulfilled; we were greatly blessed. I enjoyed my preaching and my visitations, and never did one more enjoy the social life of the parish: the young men and women of that time were all young in spirit as in years as is generally the case at that sunny period of Hie, while my walks and visits about the parish among the older ones are still a joy of remembrance. It was a happy time, thow tou years of my pastorate in North East.
Nor were the more serious matters of my work without their reward. Who of you that remembers the great work of the Lord in the winter of 1873 and '74 will not bear witness to the power of the Spirit? The last time that I was with you, I re- joiced to see so many who were converted at that time, now or-

cupying positions of trust and of work in the church. Some had gone to other churches, and some had been gathered into the Church on High. But in all the work of my ministry there is no brighter date, no greener spot or fairer view. That work was not of man at all, neither in beginning nor end; it was al- together of God. Other good seasons you have witnessed, be- fore and since; but that was the brightest of my spiritual work among you.
I want to bear witness to the universal kindness with which I was treated at North East, myself and family. We have no memories but of gladness: never a word but of kindness, this is our testimony.
I have often thought, in the years since our parting, of the bright, beautiful lake shore, of its balmy breezes, of its luscious grapes, of its well-educated, God-fearing people, prosperous be- yond the average, of the well-attended church services, of the many happy weddings at which I rejoiced, and of the happy social times for which the congregation is noted. 1 have thought also of the many funerals I attended, many of the pion- cers passed away during my ministry amongst you. I have thought of those who have passed beyond since I left you, and hope we may all meet in Heaven.
And I think to-day, as you will be thinking as you hear these words, of how gracious God has been to you, and in noth- ing more than at the good pastors you have had-and you will bear witness that I used to say that I owed my success largely to the fact of having had good predecessors.
And now, farewell for the present. May God bless you and keep you, on this day of rejoicing and of tears, and on all the days that may be lengthened out to you, until time is merged into eternity.
And as you rejoice over the present and think of those who have gone before to the better world, let me ask an interest in your prayers, that I may be spared to visit you at some other time, if it be the will of our Heavenly Father.
God bless you all, is my prayer.
Your former pastor, REV. JOHN T. OXTOBY, D. D.
