STAR

DEODORIZER and DISINFECTANT.

If you wish health, avoid as far as possible all decomposing matter, and destroy the germs of disease arising from such decom- positions with a liberal use of disinfectants.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE.

FOR WATER-CLOSETS .- Put about one-half a pint of this de- odorizer in the sink, then take a quart of water, add about a fluid ounce of the deodorizer and sprinkle the floor of the room each morning for a few days, afterwards sprinkling about once a week, will keep the room in good condition.

FOR SICK ROOM .- To one quart of water add onc fluid ounce of the deodorizer, then take an old towel, wet it with the diluted solution and hang it in some out-of-the-way part of the room. The towel should be wet once in 24 hours. In cases of contagious disease it should be wet oftener.

FOR GUTTERS AND WATER WAYS .- For lack of proper atten- tion, gutters are often the cause of many cases of the worst forms of disease. Have the gutter well washed first, then take a bucket of water and add about one pint of the fluid and allow the diluted solution to flow down the gutter.

An article like this has long been needed by the community. No house should be without it. It is thorough in its work, de- stroying disease germs and the effects of foul air immediately. It is applicable in all cases where the purification of the air is neces- sary, both in doors and out. In half-gallon bottles-PRICE SEVENTY-FIVE CENTS.

NOW COMPLETE. SIXTH EDITION, GREATLY ENLARGED. CO OLEY'S

CYCLOPÆDIA OF PRACTICAL RECEIPTS,

AND COLLATERAL INFORMATION IN THE

Arts, Manufactures, Professions and Trades, including Medicine, Pharmacy and Domestic Economy. Designed as a Comprehensive Supplement to the Pharmacopœia, and General Book of Reference for the Manufacturer, Tradesman, Amateur, and Heads of Families.

SIXTH EDITION. Revised and partly rewritten by RICHARD V. TUSON, Professor of Chemistry and Toxicology in the Royal Veterinary College.

COMPLETE IN TWO VOLUMES, 8vo, 1796 PAGES. WITH ILLUSTRATIONS. PRICE, $9.00.

COOLEY'S CYCLOPÆDIA OF PRACTICAL RECEIPTS has for many years enjoyed an extended reputation for its accuracy and comprehensiveness. The sixth edition, now just completed, is larger than the last by some six hundred pages. Much greater space than hitherto is devoted to Hygiene (including sanitation, the composition and adulteration of foods), as well as to the Arts, Pharmacy, Manufacturing Chemistry, and other subjects of importance to those for whom the work is intended. The articles on what is commonly termed " Household Medicine " have been amplified and numerically increased.

" The great characteristic of this work is, then, its general usefulness. In covering such diverse subjects, the very best and most recent research seems to have been sought for, and the work is remarkable tor intelligent industry. An estimate of the value of two volumes of some 1800 closely-printed pages can hardly be arrived at when they are skimmed over in the usnat perfinetory manner, but some necessity having arisen on the part of the reviewers to consult these volumes, bronght quite into prominence the fact that the material was excellent and up to the times. It is hardly possible to attempt to indicate alphabetically the list of topics. Sufficient it is to say that from an abattoir to zorconinm nothing has been left out. This very complete work can, then, be highly recommended as fulfilling to the letter what it purports to be-a cyclopædia of practical receipts."-New York Times.

"It is a well-edited special work, compiled with excellent judgment for special purposes, which are kept constantly in mind. If it is more comprehensive than its title suggests, that is only because it is impossible to define the limits of its purpose with exactitud(. or to describe its contents nvon a title-page. It seems to overstep its boundaries only in those cases in which its subjects belong in part within and in part without the territory that the work is intended to cover. In such cases a little more is given than the reader has a right to demand, but uot more than he is likely to want. Illustrations of the text are freely used, and the mechanical execution of the work is excellent."-New York Evening Post.

" The book may be characterized in a word as a sort of domestic cyclopædia, containing in the articles alphabetically arranged information on all sorts of topics related to home life. and information put not in an abstract way, or for mere scientific information. but in a concrete way, and for the practical service of the household. Turning over the pages, to give our readers some conception of the book, we find in it such articles as Acetic Acid, which gives the sources from which and the methods by which it is procured, and its uses and dangers; Adulteration, which, besides a very brief history of adulterations, gives in alphabetical order a list of the articles most commonly adulterated, with the names of the substances used for that purpose ; Agne, which , tates the symptoms and external causes of the discase, and briefly suggests methods of prevention. These articles may serve as types, to give the reader some idea of the general spirit and character of the book for the manufacturer, the storekeeper, and the household. It is au exceedingly valuable book of reference."- The Christian Union.

W AS organized in 1865, for the purpose of promoting Life Insurance among Friends in the United States. It is similar in its organization to the Friends' Provident Institution of England, a company which has been in operation for more than forty years and which has taken high rank among the life insurance companies of that country. The Provident Life and Trust Company of Philadelphia is not confined in its operations to Friends, its benefits being extended to all others of like careful habits. Its claims to pub- Fc confidence and patronage are based upon the superior longevity of its members, the care exercised in the investment of its funds, and the strict economy with which its affairs are managed. Its assumption of superior longevity is fortified by its own experience, and by the admitted fact that Friends, owing to their moderate and temperate habits, exhibit 21: exceptional average length of life. The effect of a low rate of mortality, both upon the security and cheapness of insurance in the Provident, is too obvious to need comment or explanation.
