Preface
THE ISLAND CEMETERY, like many early New England cemeteries, is located on a sightly hill in the center of the Island, near Legion Park, commanding a magnificent view of New Harbor and the ocean. The ALLEN and DICKENS cemeteries are on the southwest side of the Island. The JOHN P. DODGE cemetery is on the west side near the West Side Church and the small SANDS and SHEFFIELD cemeteries are on the north part of the Island, commonly called the "Neck."
The ISLAND CEMETERY has many well-kept, well-defined lots. Some of the older parts of this, as well as some of the private cemeteries, are clogged with weeds and brambles, making the task of copying stone markings very difficult. Since 1930 Mrs. Mansfield has worked persistently in trying to obtain these records for preserva- tion for the future and for current use in genealogical research. We are grateful to her for this important contribution to the Block Island Historical Society.

Foreword
TO THE LOCAL HISTORIAN and genealogist gravestone inscriptions are of the utmost importance and often of value to the general his- torian, containing, as they do, information not to be found elsewhere. Moreover, they are more subject to obliteration than other records. This writer has seen valuable gravestone markings disappear in his own time. Consequently, anyone interested in the history and gene- alogy of the ancient town of New Shoreham owes a debt of gratitude to that devoted student of New Shoreham history and genealogy, Mrs. William H. Mansfield, for collecting, with great difficulty, the gravestone inscriptions of the town. They are invaluable to the gene- alogists of Block Island families. Many of these inscriptions are bound sooner or later to disappear. The Society is fortunate in having so competent and devoted a member.
