APPENDIX

APPENDIX

The foregoing pages of index record more names of inhabitants of the Town of Providence for the first one hundred years of its settlement than have heretofore been assembled in any other single list. It contains 728 different surnames, many of which represent two or three generations in hundreds of families.

The principal genealogical reference work for Rhode Island is Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of three- and four-generation pedigrees of 485 Rhode Island families. Of these, nearly one-quarter (106) are Providence families. As this figure represents only about 15 per cent of the different Providence surnames listed in the foregoing index, we have before us for the first time the names of several hundred Providence families of which, genealogically speaking, little or nothing is known.

In using this index of Providence families it will be necessary for the researcher frequently to consult Austin's Genealogical Dictionary. As comparatively few libraries have this work, and still fewer have it com- plete with Austin's own "Additions and Corrections", this appendix has been added in order to include a list of Austin's Rhode Island families, together with references to the various additions and corrections and other data on these families.

The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, by John Osborne Austin, was published in 1887. It contains the pedigrees of 485 Rhode Island families of which some 392 were carried out to three generations, and 93 to four generations. This is one of the more important of the Rhode Island publications and is probably used more than any other single Rhode Island reference book.

The Dictionary is principally confined to the first three generations of those settlers who came to Rhode Island before 1690-to Providence, Warwick, Pawtuxet, King's Town, Newport, Portsmouth, and Pawtucket. Families living in old Plymouth Colony towns annexed to Rhode Island in 1747, and later, were not considered to come strictly within the scope of this work, yet many families in these towns are included, particularly in Tiverton and Little Compton, which were partly settled from Rhode Island. Some other families which properly belong to Rehoboth, Swan- sea, and other towns in Plymouth and the Massachusetts Bay Colonies are also included.

Appendix

The Dictionary contains 443 pages, 11 inches wide by 14 inches high. Each page is divided into three vertical columns with a generation shown in each column. Four-generation pedigrees are carried over to the next page. The arrangement is entirely different from that of any other genealogical dictionary.

After Mr. Austin finished the manuscript for his Dictionary, he wrote two and one-half pages of additions and corrections including surnames from Aldrich to Wooley. These are in the printed Dictionary at pages 438 to 440.

In January 1900 he issued "Additions and Corrections-Supplement (for insertion in the Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island) " includ- ing surnames from Aldrich to Wright, 31/4 pages. Later, he published "Additions and Corrections (continued) ", undated, including surnames from Arnold to Wodell, 11/8 pages. His last and final supplement of "Additions and Corrections (concluded) " undated, included surnames from Almy to Williams, 11/8 pages.

Besides his Dictionary, Mr. Austin is the author of One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families, published in 1893. This is a collection of genealo- gies showing the ancestry of him and his wife.

In 1900 he wrote The Journal of William Jefferay, Gentleman. This is a fictional work based on historical facts, and although it states clearly on the title page that it is "A Diary That Might Have Been", it has been frequently quoted as a source record. Richman, in his Rhode Island, Its Making and Its Meaning (1902) , in vol. 1, page 7, quotes "Jefferay's Jour- nal, page 30" as an authority.

The following is a list of the names of the 485 Rhode Island families in Austin's Genealogical Dictionary showing the 392 three-generation families and the 93 four-generation families. Of the total number, some 106 are Providence families.

The most prolific writer and greatest living authority on early Rhode Island families is Mr. G. Andrews Moriarty, F. S. A., now of Ogunquit, Maine, but formerly of Newport and Bristol, Rhode Island. For nearly forty years he has searched not only the original records in New England, but also those in England and in Barbados, British West Indies, the latter island being closely connected by trade and family association with early Rhode Island.

His extensive research in England has brought to light many new English ancestors of these Rhode Island families and has also proved con- clusively that numerous old traditions as to the English ancestry of some of these families have no basis in fact. His successful research in Germany produced proof of the origin of the Peter Tallman family of which little had been known. Since 1913, the scholarly studies resulting from Mr. Moriarty's original research have appeared in print in many different publications.

Mr. Moriarty contributed to the American Genealogist an outstanding series entitled "Additions and Corrections to Austin", dealing with some 112 of Austin's families, including brief genealogies of six families omitted by Austin. He has not yet finished the publication of his additions and corrections. The October (1949) issue, vol. XXV, pages 249 and 250, will have notes on BROWN, CRANSTON, FENNER, and STANTON.

A list of Mr. Moriarty's additions and corrections to Austin's Genea- logical Dictionary, with reference to the volume and page numbers of the American Genealogist where they will be found, follows:

WILSON

While there are printed genealogies for many of the Rhode Island families, many of the older publications are not to be depended on and must be used with discretion, for family tradition was the basis of much of the work. Genealogy today is an exact science based on source record proof-we either find it or we do not, and the word "probable" is the danger signal that indicates the absence of a definite source record.

Much important data on Rhode Island families are "buried" in genealogical and historical publications. In the following pages will be found references to Rhode Island names appearing in the New England Historical & Genealogical Register for the past 36 years, from 1913; the American Genealogist for 15 years, from 1934; the Rhode Island Historical Society Collections, and its successor, Rhode Island History, for 31 years, from 1918. Most of the writers of these data have established reputations for accuracy and reliability. In extracting the references to Rhode Island names appearing in these publications, some names may have been overlooked.
