Barbados, called "Little England" by its loyal inhabitants, is the most southern and eastern of the Caribbee Islands, British West Indies. It is about 2000 miles southeast of New York. Although under British rule since 1605, it was not permanently settled until 1627. Many of the early emigrants from England first settled at Barbados and from there came to New England, and vice versa. For example, in 1647 Peter Tallman came from Hamburg, Germany, to the Island of Barbados. About 1650 he re- moved to Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and about a year later removed to Flushing, Long Island, but soon returned to Rhode Island (Moriarty, N. E. Hist. & Gen. Register, vol. LXXXVI, pp. 69-74) .

During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the connection be- tween Rhode Island and Barbados was extremely close. Many had brothers

or kinsmen among the settlers at Barbados and there was a constant migra- tion of families between the two places. Rhode Island exported timber, pipe staves, salt fish, cheese, horses (Narragansett) , etc., to Barbados and imported from that island muscovado sugar and molasses. Ship-loads of this molasses were made into New England rum.

In 1913 Mr. G. Andrews Moriarty spent considerable time in research on New England families in the Public Record Offices at Bridgetown, Barbados, the results of which were published in the New England Histori- cal & Genealogical Register under the title "Barbabian Notes". The Rhode Island family names and references are as follows:

ALMY, Peleg, vol. LXVII, p. GOULDING, Roger, vol. LXVII, REDWOOD, John, vol. LXVII, 370.

In addition to the notes and genealogies in the several historical publi- cations already cited, there are many additional data on Rhode Island fami- lies in other publications.

In the Providence Oath of Allegiance and Its Signers, 1651-2, by Rich- ard LeBaron Bowen, are genealogies and exact size photographic repro- ductions of the autographs of the following signers of the Providence Oath of Allegiance, which document is not among the original Providence Town Papers:

HARRIS, Thomas

BROWNE, Henry HOPKINS, Thomas

WICKENDEN, William BROWNE, John

BENNETT, Samuel

FENNER, Arthur ASHTON, James

ANGELL, Thomas DEXTER, Gregory BEWITT, Hugh INMAN, Edward

Rhode Island Colonial Money and Its Counterfeiting, 1647-1726, by Richard LeBaron Bowen, contains genealogies of the counterfeiters John GREENMAN, Richard LIPPENCOTT, and Nicholas OTIS. The last two names are not mentioned by Austin.

The four volumes of Early Rehoboth, by Richard LeBaron Bowen, are rich in new material on Rhode Island families. The very complete indexes show many Providence names. In vol. III, pages 47 and 48, is an

Appendix

account, printed for the first time, of the murder by the Indians, in 1675, of Thomas MANN's first wife and child. Vol. III, Chap. VI, contains the only printed genealogy of Capt. George WRIGHT, of Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony; Salem and Braintree, Massachusetts Bay Colony; Providence and Newport, Rhode Island Colony; Gravesend, Westchester, and Flushing, Long Island, New Netherland. This is the man Roger Williams refers to in his letter of 29 Jan. 1648/9 to John Winthrop, Jr. Many data on other Rhode Island names are found in this chapter.

For CHASMORE, see The Case of Richard Chasmore, alias Long Dick, by Bradford F. Swan, published in 1944 by the Rhode Island Society of Colonial Wars. Also, for DEXTER, see the same writer's Gregory Dexter of Old and New England, Printer's Valhalla series, 1949. -

A Thomas WILLETT genealogy (including his English ancestry) , by Daniel Hooland Carpenter, is in the Old Colony Historical Society Col- lections, No. 7 (1909) , pages 94-105.

In the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, vol. LXXX (1949) , No. 1, pages 41-51, is an article by Elizur Yale Smith entitled "Capt. Thomas WILLETT, Mayor of New York". While the article con- tains nothing new, it brings what is known together and is worth-while. In the same issue is the beginning of an article by Rosalie Fellows Bailey, entitled "The WILLETT Family of Flushing, Long Island".

An interesting genealogy of John WILLIAMS, of Newport, R. I., is in Putnam's Genealogical Magazine, vol. III, N.S., page 1.

In the Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society are notes on Rhode Island families by G. Andrews Moriarty, F.S.A. These are: BORDEN, Joseph and Anna; and SILVESTER, vol. XIV, pages 164, 166.

Not to be neglected are the seven volumes of the Newport Historical Magazine (1880-1884) and its successor the Rhode Island Historical Maga- zine (1884-1887) , edited by Risbrough Hammett Tilley, for forty years Librarian of the Newport Historical Society. These publications contain much valuable material on Rhode Island families.

No research on Rhode Island families can be complete without consulting the valuable Index To Genealogical Periodicals, vol. I (1932) and vol. II (1948) , compiled by Donald Lines Jacobus. The two index volumes cover nearly all of the genealogical data which has appeared in some 52 periodicals issued by American historical societies since about 1900. "Even if there is a printed genealogy of the surname in which the searcher is interested, there may have been more recent discoveries or important corrections published in magazine articles." These are diffi- cult to find without the help of this index.
