PREFACE.

In presenting to the citizens of the City and County of Sumter THE INITIAL volume of the Sumter Directory, we desire to extend our thanks for the splendid manner in which our effort has been received, enabling us to produce a volume of statistics both useful and necessary.

In the preparation of this volume neither pains or expense have been spared to make it complete, and we claim, without fear or favor, that it is at least equal to any Directory publication in the world. In this as well as all other of our publications we used the services of trained directory men, and the information is dependable.

Embraced in this volume we give five complete departments of the City of Sumter, the canvass covering the suburbs as well as the city proper and within the territory covered by this City canvass there are more than 10,000 inhabitants.

We also show a Business and Professional department of Sumter County outside of the City and the name and Post Office address of the tax paying farmers of the County.

Immediately following the delivery, we will send one copy of the Sumter Directory to each of our exchanges which embrace the principal cities as far west as Detroit, Mich., which will do considerable towards ad- vertising Sumter away from home. The very fact of Sumter supporting a complete duplex Directory such as this volume is will attract the favorable attention of Directory users throughout the country.

In conclusion, we desire to extend our thanks for the many courtesies shown the representatives of this work in the gathering of statistics neces- sary and to the Business men of Sumter for their liberal support, making the present volume possible, promising to continue to render the very best service, and an improvement with each issue.

Respectfully,

THE WALSH DIRECTORY CO.,
