Foreword 1630822

A man's surroundings and the influences that impress themselves upon his mind each day, go far to determine what his life is and becomes. If his business is located in a dull, sluggish town, he partakes of the inertia. and his business soon becomes sluggish likewise, With its vast area of 266,000 square miles, with a winter climate of snow and ice along its northern border, and of sunshine and blooming roses along its southern extreme, with forest regions, prairie stretches and flowing streams, there is health and vigor in every section. With a population of 4,000,000, Texas has only fifteen people to the square mile. Texas is first of all the states in cotton, in cattle, in sheep, in iron producing area, and in timber; it has more wheat lands than both the Dakotas, and is fifth in corn production, with an abundance of coal, illimitable measures of lignite, more marble, granite and other build- ing stone than all New England, and more miles of railroad than any other state.

Dallas is 315 miles by rail, almost directly north, from Galveston, the State's seaport city. Dallas is the largest city in the State, the population now being 100,000. Thirty-six years ago the population was less than 800. The pluck, liberality and shrewdness of a score of those 800 people secured the first two railroads. Now eight railroads penetrate the State in thirteen different directions from the city, three going into Galveston and by their connecting lines reaching five other gulf ports, two giving direct connection with New Orleans; two through connecting lines with San Francisco, and all, directly or indirectly, with the great eastern and western cities. These railroads bring into Dallas weekly 1800 cars of freight and haul out 1600 car loads originating in the city. The yardage property and terminals owned by railway lines within the corporate limits of Dallas are worth, with depot buildings, not less than $3,000,000.

The wholesale business of Dallas for the year ending December 31st, 1908, was $109- 715,000. The business in agricultural implements and machinery reached the highest figure, $26,000,000, since Dallas is in the middle of the black land section of Texas, the section producing more than half of all the cotton, corn and small grain of the state. In the following order come the other lines of business: Dry goods and clothing-$15,000,000; Groceries, liquors, cigars and tobacco-$13,500,000; Packing house products-$7,000,000; Saddlery, harness, etc .- $5,200,000; Fruits and produce-$4,000,000; Feed, grain and hay-$3,780,000; Electrical machinery and supplies-$3,500,000; Cement-$3,500,000; Lumber-$2,750,000; Drugs, holiday goods, etc .- $2,500,000; Hardware-$2,500,000; Stationery (including book and job printing)-$2,500,000; Candy, crackers, etc .- $1,800,000; Books-$1,250,000; Millinery-$1,250,000; Jewelry-$1,250,000; Furniture-$1,000,000; Musical instruments and supplies-$1,000,000; Poultry and eggs-$1,000,000; Paints, etc .- 800,000; Wrapping paper, etc .- $550,000; Bread-$500,000; Seed-$750,000; Hats, caps and gloves-$650,000; Sporting goods, powders, etc .- $445,000; Dental and Surgical instruments, ctc .- $200,000; Coffins-$190,000; Photographer's supplies-$150,000; Bar- bers' supplies-$150,000; Chili, etc .- $50,000; Miscellaneous lines-$5,000,000. Of the agricultural implement houses, fifteen of the larger ones are in their own buildings, costing $100,000 each. These houses employ 800 people, 200 on the road all the time.

In the matter of manufactories Dallas stands ahead of all other cities in the Southwest of equal population. The chief of these enterprises, perhaps, are the two Portland cement plants, manufacturing an unexcelled article from the white limestone rock and shale found in inexhaustible quantities all around the city and even in the corporate limits. One of these plants cost $1,500,000 and the other half as much, the output being 300,000 barrels yearly. The largest cotton mill in the Southwest is here also, and the most extensive foundry. Dallas has one manufactory unique in character, the manufacture of Chili Con Carne and other chili products. These products are now being introduced in all parts of the country, sales for 1908 amounting to $50,000. There are also two large packing houses, the largest establishment in the Southwest for the manufacture of extracts and syrups, an immense cracker factory, the largest buggy factory in the state, two large cotton seed oil mills, a petroleum refinery and a large steel tank factory.

Dallas has six National Banks-one recently organized-and five State?banks and trust companies, with a total capital and surplus of $7,000,000. On November,27, 1908, the total deposits in the National banks were $21,707,535.78, and the cash on hand was $11,345,379.65.

The Texas State Fair Association has been in existence twenty-two years, giving an exhibition every year in the early fall. The grounds, 125 acres, worth $375,000, and the buildings, race track and other improvements worth $500,000, belong to the city, the grounds being used for park purposes. During the time necessary for holding the fair, the association has charge of the grounds. Every fall during the sixteen days of the Fair 600,000 visitors come to the city, large numbers of them from other states. The Fair that closed on November 1st of last year made a profit of $110,678, which shows the importance of the enterprise and its worth to Dallas.

Another factor that is to prove of immense advantage to Dallas is the improvement of the Trinity river, whereby it will be made navigable the year round for steamboats drawing as much as six feet of water when loaded. Already the National Government has expended

$1,500,000 in clearing out drift wood and snags, cutting off over-hanging timber and con- structing locks and dams. The first dam was recently completed, the second is well ad- vanced toward completion, and the others required are located and the government engineer party with boats and a large force of men is busily at work pushing matters to a conclusion as rapidly as possible. This not only gives the city water rates for transportation to the Gulf of Mexico, but opens up a vast area of virgin territory, embracing great quantities of hard wood for manufacturing purposes, lignite measures for fuel and iron ore in large quan- tities, all immediately along the river. The cheap transportation of these raw materials will bring new manufacturing enterprises, and water rates will not only keep the mercantile interests of our city, but the surrounding country, and lead to increased population, new agricultural and other enterprises, all for the enrichment and betterment generally of Dallas.

Dallas has sixty miles of electric street-car lines; paved streets and sidewalks throughout its limits, electric lights and gas, one telephone system and another under construction ; owns its own water works; has a paid fire department, with electric alarm system; an efficient police force; the finest court house in Texas; a public school system with ample school room facilities, 12,000 pupils in attendance, and the most elegant and commodious high school building in the Southwest. There are three female colleges-Catholic, Episcopal, and Baptist,- and a Catholic college for young men; and there are parochial and private schools in abundance. All the Christian denominations have large congregations and fine churches, this city being the seat of two dioceses, Catholic and Episcopal, each with a commodious and handsome Cathedral. There are in addition to a fine City Hospital, two large and ornate sanitariums, Baptist and Catholic, and five private Sanitariums. The several com- mercial organizations heretofore existing have just been combined as a Chamber of Com- merce.

At an election held April 6th last, a bond issue was voted by the people for the creation of an enlarged system of water supply, the city having purchased on either side of White Rock creek within a few miles of the City Hall, several tracts of land aggregating 1,000 acres. The purpose is to dam White Rock creek, thus creating a lake covering 1,280,acres of ground, to be supplied from the watershed drained by the creek and holding 5,785,000,000 gallons of water. The bond issue of $500,000 (supplemented by $250,000 already on hand) is to pay for this improvement, including the dam, settling reservoirs and pumping station. With the additional supply, the city will then have sufficient water for the population of a quarter of a million that is expected within a couple of decades.

Despite the number of ward school buildings and the magnificent high school building, the demand for further public school facilities is so urgent that a bond issue of $200,000 was voted to build new schools. By reason of the city's continuous growth, the scholastic popu- lation increases so rapidly that the necessity for new school buildings has come to be a serious demand.

Among the expenditures of the city government during 1908 were the following: Water pipe, $116,361; New pumping stations for water works, $134,949; Fire department, $100,000. Additional park area of 75 acres was secured, and building permits reaching $2,309,030 were issued.

A new Y. M. C. A. building, costing $150,000, has been recently finished. A fund of $55,000 has been subscribed by the public for the erection of a live-stock coliseum at the Fair Grounds. The Fair Association will add $45,000 to this amount, and the building will be completed for use during the next fair.

There is no better indication of a city's growth and prosperity than its postoffice re- ceipts. From year to year there has been a continuous increase in postal business. With a building erected and improved from time to time at a total cost to the government of $600,000, the office is still cramped for room. The postoffice receipts for the year 1908 were $559,643.68, an increase over the previous year ending December 31st, of $39,643.68.

To every good and truthful story there is always a moral. The moral to this story is, come to Texas and above all, to Dallás. It is all ground floor yet. Every direction you may look you will see and grasp, not one, but innumerable opportunities in any vocation in life you may desire to pursue, and every opportunity is rich with reward to the man who tries.
