LINES OF TRADE

[[ Looking at the list of all those who sell-the modern way of buying goods.

[ The man who buys without looking at the list of those who sell does himself a gross injustice.

( Using the classified directory of the whole City is like going to the market place; it brings to view each and every individual in any and all lines of trade, and here the intelligent buyer may select the best of everything at the lowest price.

[. The habit of using the classified directory will save large sums of money and will always secure the best in any line. It is the modern, up-to-date method of getting what you want.

[[ To the advertiser the City Directory is the most economical and effective method of saying what he has to say to the entire population.

INTRODUCTORY

1429837

The approval which preceding issues of the Salt Lake City Directory have met with, has been flattering to us and has stimulated our efforts to produce as perfect a work as the nature of the case will admit of. No work of this kind can be absolutely perfect, and each succeeding issue suggests improvements which we take pleasure in adding. We have been constantly mindful of the fact that Salt Lake City is the Metropolis of the Inter-Moun- tain Region-a city not only of great possibilities, but of great actualities. We realize that in publishing its annual directory we have been in a meas- ure identified with the record of its growth and progress, and to a certain extent, responsible for an accurate and truthful exhibit in this regard. We have tried to meet this responsibility with increased effort from year to year. How well we have succeeded this year, the following pages will show. We have carefully verified and revised every item of information contained in this volume, and trust that the many hours of labor spent in so doing will be rewarded by the Public's approval and future valuable assistance.

This volume contains by actual count 58,115 names-an increase of 1942 over our 1908 volume. This does not include the names of firms or corpor- ations, removals or death notices. That Salt Lake City has grown steadily in population during the past year is hereby shown beyond a doubt. Using the multiple of 2 (the lowest used by any directory publisher), we estimate the present population of Salt Lake City and the suburbs to be 116,230. We have for several years past made a complete and accurate canvass of all the suburbs, including Ft. Douglas, Murray, Sandy, West Jordan and Garfield, where we always obtain hundreds of names which will be found in the columns of this work, and which make it much more valuable as a book of reference than it would be, were we to leave out the suburbs and present to the Public a directory containing the names of our citizens living within the city limits only. When these facts are taken into consideration, one can readily account for any difference there may be between the figures of the United States so-called "official" census and those of our estimate as to the exact population.
