The ethics of etiquette assume that woman is the superior and the man honored in the introduction.

Among women it is the younger who is presented to the elder, the unmarried to the married woman, unless the younger woman is a celebrity or particularly distinguished, in which case less distinguished persons of whatever age are presented to her.

The same rule applies to men.

Friends may present friends at the house of a mutual acquaintance, but an introduction from host or hostess is more appropriate.

Hasty introductions it is well to avoid. Unless awk- ward not to do so, it is well to wait until there is some reason to believe that an introduction would be agreeable to both.

It is the part of the woman to acknowledge the ac- quaintance of the man to whom she has been introduced.

Among close friends it matters not who bows first.

The custom of shaking hands is less indulged in in society than formerly. It is no longer considered good form to shake hands when introduced, unless one desires to be particularly cordial. Women extend their hands to

men, and well bred men will never insist upon hand- shaking.

Introductions on the street or in cars are not considered good form.

-

Calling.

·When making a formal call, a man will carry his hat into the parlor. He may place it on a table or on the floor beside him.

The hostess should rise and offer her hand to callers. When they leave she accompanies them to the parlor door. The hostess uses her own judgment about accom- anying special guests to the outside door.

Guests unacquainted meeting in the house of a mutual friend should not wait for an introduction before con- versing. Recognition outside is, however, unnecessary.

Dinner calls should be promptly made within a week. It is courteous to call upon the hostess "at home" day, if it be possible.

First calls should be returned promptly.

Formal calls are made between 3 and 6 p. m. Women not receiving should be "Not at home." The formula "Begs to be excused" is not considered courteous.

Married men call with their wives once or twice a year, if possible; if not, their wives leave their cards with their own.

It is not polite to invite a woman to your house if you have not called upon her. An invitation does not take the place of a visit, except where one's age entitles one to privileges.

A woman not in her own house does not rise when other callers depart.

The discussion of religion, politics or scandals is to be avoided when calling.

Cards.

Women use their judgment about leaving their hus- band's cards with theirs at all times, but always for first calls.

It is no longer considered good form to leave a bunch

of cards when calling on a large family; sometimes two may be left, and occasionally three, but never more.

Residents call first on newcomers and strangers.

All cards left personally should be creased in the center. Cards left at teas are never turned.

Card turned at upper right corner signifies visit.

Card turned at upper left corner signifies congratula- tions.

Card turned at lower right corner signifies adieu.

Card turned at lower left corner signifies condolence.

Turning the entire left end signifies a call on the family.

R. S. V. P. signifies an answer is requested.

P. P. C. signifies a farewell visit.

Invitations.

All invitations require an answer, whether requested or not. A dinner or luncheon invitation should be answered immediately.

Dinner Parties.

Guests should arrive at dinner parties five or ten min- utes before the hour appointed for the dinner.

To be late at a dinner is unpardonable.

The host at a dinner takes in the woman who is oldest or the guests of honor, and places her on his right. The hostess comes last with the most prominent man present, who sits at her right.

Dinner cards are not used as much as formerly.

Coffee is usually served in the parlor, after which the men are allowed to retire to the smoking room, unless they remain in the dining room to smoke.

Dress for Gentlemen.

Evening dress is always proper after six o'clock, never before. White lawn ties should be worn.

For formal calls the frock coat is suitable.

Men wear white gloves for all evening functions.

It is customary to wear evening dress to the theater when accompanied by women.

General.

Look at those by whom you are addressed.

Do not boast of money, education or influential friends.

To frequently repeat the name of the person with whom you are conversing implies too much familiarity, if but slightly acquainted.

Never leave your spoon in your tea or coffee cup nor take soup twice.

Street and Avenue Guide.

The arrangement of this Street and Avenue Guide is copy- righted by R. L. Polk & Co. All Rights Reserved.

Explanatory.

The street system of Salt Lake City is unique and original. The Temple Block is taken as the center. The initial point for the numbering and naming of all regular streets is the southeast corner of the Temple Block (Brig- ham Young Monument). The streets running north, east, south and west of this block are North Temple, East Temple (or Main street), South Temple and West Temple streets, respectively. The next streets north, east, south and west, parallel with the above-named streets are First North, First East (or State street), First South and First West, respectively, and so on in regular order of number- ing to the limits of the city, all the eight-rod streets.

The narrower system of streets in the northeast section of the city are named as follows: Commencing on the north side of South Temple street, the first street running north, east of First East (or State) street, is A street, the second parallel therewith B street, the next C, and so on to the eastern limits of the city. The same system of streets at

right angles with the above are numbered: The first street north and parallel with South Temple street being First street, the next Second, and so on to the northern limits of the city.

Numbering of houses.

In blocks of 660 feet there is allowed 100 numbers to each side of the block. Blocks of 330 feet have fifty num- bers to each side. Center street and other streets running northerly and southerly in Plat "E" have one number to each rod of frontage.

Commencing at the initial streets (Main and South Temple), the numbering extends (along each street) east, west, north and south, the even numbers always on the right and the odd numbers on the left, looking away from the initial street.

Commercial street and all other streets running through any block, but not extending to the initial point, are numbered separately, beginning with No. 1 and num- bering according to the above system.
