COMPILED BY BENJ. R. SHERIFF.

PRICE $3.00, AND FOR SALE BY WEST, JOHNSTON & CO., 911 East Main Street, Richmond, Va.

Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1876, by BENJ. R. SHERIFF and WM. H. BEV- ERIDGE, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.

PREFACE.

IN presenting this, our second issue of the Richmond and Manches- ter Directory, we hope we have supplied a want long felt by the citizens, and trust they will overlook any errors or discrepancies we may have committed. We have done our best to make the work complete and accurate in all its departments, but we do not claim that it is altogether free from errors, as there are many classes to contend with in collecting the information for a publication of this kind, and no matter how great the experience of the compiler, a few errors are unavoidable. The Richmond portion of the work contains 17,331 names-an increase of 726 over the last publication. Multiplying the total number by 4, the ratio used for a similar purpose in New York and other cities, would give Richmond a population of 69,324. Knowing that our work will com- pare favorably with publications of a similar kind throughout the country, it is our intention to publish it every eighteen months. With the ex- perience gained by this publication, we can assure our patrons that our future issue will be an improvement upon what we have already done, and we shall be thankful to any friend who will take the trouble to point out any errors they may discover, or to suggest where improve- may be added or made. The most numerous names in the Directory are the Smiths, 242: Joneses, 201 ; Browns, 196; Harrises, 141 ; Tay- lors, 158; and the Whites, 76. The following is the number of names under each letter :
