This compilation is dedicated to the memory of the Honorable Alison O. Baum (1854-1937), a native of Princess Anne County. He served on a number of Commissions, held several county offices and was a member of the House of Delegates. To him I owe my interest in the history of the county.

PREFACE

The only known Marriage Bonds extant of Princess Anne County, Virginia, between 1691 and 1822, are under the excellent care of the Archives Division of the Virginia State Library in Richmond. These bonds cover the period 1749-1798. Fortunately, the county has Ministers' Returns, beginning in 1786, to partially fill the gap prior to 1822.

It is hoped that many will be aided in their search for the names of their early ancestors by the publishing of the abstracts of these bonds and of the Ministers' Returns.

Though tempted, no liberties have been taken with the varied spellings of names; such have been copied as written. What may appear to be an inconsistency may be an attempt to follow exact wording or capitalization - "Wid. " may begin with a capital letter in one instant; in another it may begin with a small "w", et cetera. Some Returns had the date 1799-1800 only.

Ministers' Returns, 1786-1821, were made by:

Joshua Lawrence - Baptist

Anthony Walke - Episcopal

Cornelius Calvert - Episcopal

Charles Henley, Sen. - Methodist John Owen - Benjamin Ashley - Baptist

I wish to thank the staff of the Archives Division of the State Library, especially Mr. J. W. Dudley, and Mr. John Fentress, Clerk of Court of Princess Anne County, for their cooperation. I would also like to express my appreciation to Mrs. Sadie Scott Kellam (V. Hope), Historian, Princess Anne County, for her history of the county - a county rich in history and tradition.

HISTORIC PRINCESS ANNE COUNTY, VIRGINIA

"Build today, then, strong and sure, with a firm and ample base; And ascending and secure, shall tomorrow find its place. "

The late Judge Benjamin Dey White of Princess Anne wrote in this wise: "Few places in the State are richer in historical material than Lynnhaven Parish - coterminous with Princess Anne County". With this statement we heartily agree. In fact, most people who have lived here for any length of time, name April 26, 1607 as Princess Anne County's birthday, the place of birth, as Cape Henry. For on this day and at this place there came ashore a band of thirty men who planted a cross on the sands washed by Chesopean (Chesapeake) Bay. A party of one hundred and four had sailed from Blackwall, London, England, in December 1606, in three small ships. They entered the bay at four A. M., sailing between two capes. On the right the cape was Charles, on the left, where the thirty men came ashore, the cape was called Henry. Nor are we unmindful that the earliest maps of the area show two Kings (Indian) houses; the name of the one best known was Apasus. After more than three hundred and fifty years we agree with those early Englishmen that "Heaven and earth never agreed better to frame a place for man's habitation, than Virginia".

Of priorities there are many in our County. These are noted by historians. Not so often is mention made of our heaven given resources of fertile acres, succulent seafood, stately forests, and the like. With healthful weather conditions, navigable waters, safe harbors, the citizenry of Princess Anne prospered, lived well, educated their children, and many attained recognition in high places. Nor should we fail to mention our native shrubs and wild flowers which surely delighted the women. The Lotus still blooms at Sigma.

It was 1691 when our population had increased to such a degree that our Virginia Legislative Assembly cut Lynnhaven Parish from Lower Norfolk County, and formed a new county and named it Princess Anne, honoring a member of the House of Stuart. Mary and Anne, daughters of James, Duke of York, each in turn, became a queen of England. There is extant record at Princess Anne of our hon- ored lady's accession to the throne and of her proclamation of liberty of conscience to all protestants. This latter was "Read in open Court the 6th 8ber 1703 & Odr. to be recorded". It is signed for record by Will Roberson, Cl. Curr. For the most part, our deeds, wills, and court orders (Minutes) are intact, therefore one may usually speak with authority, though some depend on tradition. We have recorded history regarding witches and their trials, about pirates and coastal defense by the beach patrol system. This system was abandoned after the building of that first Light House at Cape Henry. This priority is one of our most treasured. It is recorded as the first coastal project of the United States of America. The date was 1791. It still stands on a sandhill and has lately been restored by the Associa- tion of the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities.

As population grew, for convenience, the location of Court House and jail were of necessity changed. Likewise villages and towns came into being, then were forsaken. Today there remains Kemps' Landing of 1740, incorporated as Kempsville in 1785.

The first church building for Lynnhaven Parish was at Church Point on Lynnhaven River. With a population change the parish church was The Brick Church, by early 1800 recorded as Donation Church. The brick church restored in 1916 is the church built in 1736. As late as 1931 there stood in our county seven seventeenth century homes. Today there are fewer. Architects dote on studying the Wishart house, because of the Jacobean eaves, because of its conformities to specifications laid down for "seating" certain patented acres, because from extant records the date may be closely approximated, if not actually accepted as proven. The Thorow- good (Thoroughgood) House has lately been restored and added to Norfolk's Museum holdings.

Always our county has done its bit when time of war came. Our records tell us of outfitting men to go against the Indians, the number of men required, their coats, the food to be furnished per man by the homefolks. We have no listing of soldiers in the American Revolution. But much may be learned from Court Orders. Princess Anne was taken over by the British in 1812. To oldtimers the Seatack name bore witness. Our sad lack at Princess Anne is Marriage Bonds. The earliest record book for these bonds is dated 1822. However, disintegrating scraps were deposited in State Archives and by modern methods of restoration much has been salvaged. For this particular reason and because Elizabeth Wingo, whose roots are in our county, had the urge to give us in book form all the remain- ing marriage records (bonds and minister's returns), this volume of hers is most timely.
