PREFACE
Until 1966 the only known extant early Marriage Bonds of Princess Anne County, Virginia were those housed in the Archives Division of the Virginia State Library in Richmond. These Marriage Bonds cover the period of 1749 through 1798.
The Marriage Bonds of Princess Anne County for the years 1799 through 1821 were thought by all to be lost. They were missing prior to 1895 as the Historian, Edward W. James, did not include any reference to them in his five volumes of "The Lower Norfolk County Antiquary". Accordingly, Ministers' Returns were substi- tuted for the missing marriage bonds when "MARRIAGES OF PRINCESS ANNE COUNTY VIRGINIA, 1749 - 1821, Volume I" was compiled.
The compiler, while searching tills of loose court records with the able assistance of her son, Bruce, located many, if not all, of the missing Marriage Bonds, 1799 - 1821, and fourteen Marriage Bonds, period of 1724 - 1798. These bonds, found during 1966, are herewith abstracted for the first time.
Various libraries were also checked. Six Marriage Bonds of Prin- cess Anne County, all prior to 1799, were located through the courtesy of the Alderman Library, University of Virginia, and are also abstracted for the first time.
No attempt has been made to change the variations in the spelling of certain names, they have been copied exactly as recorded.
Originals of the Ministers' Returns, 1799 through 1821, were not available when Volume I, Marriages of Princess Anne County Virginia, was compiled. Court copies of the missing originals were available and used. The originals were located during the 1966 search of loose court records. Comparison of the court copies with the or- iginals revealed discrepancies in some of the court copies. These discrepancies have been corrected in this volume.
It is regrettable that Marriage Bonds of Princess Anne County, Virginia, period of 1691 through 1723, and many thereafter, are apparently lost forever, the prey of time, mice, and wars.
I take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the coopera- tion and encouragement of Mr. John V. Fentress, Clerk of Court, City of Virginia Beach, Virginia (formerly Princess Anne County, Virginia) and his staff.
