This machine is constructed upon the principle of a " center dis- charge" and vibrating disk. The pan may be made of iron, wood, or other material, and of any convenient size, say from four to six feet in diameter, having a journal under it, to hold it in position, and upon which to vibrate. This journal is hollow, and forms the discharge

pipe of the pan. The pan is so constructed that its center surface is two or three inches higher than the surface at the periphery, and as it is fed at the periphery, the sand must necessarily work its way up hill to the center to find a discharge. This the lighter portion readily does by the aid of the peculiar vibrating motion given to the pan-the heavier portion, consisting of sulphurets, amalgam, or free gold, remains near the circumference.

A represents a frame of wood upon which the pan is built and sup- ported.

B is the pan which consists of a corrugated surface, radiating from the center, as is shown in the engraving.

C is an amalgamated disk, one half of which only is shown, with a bowl in the center, from which the water and ore is equally distributed over the disk, and passes down through the outer edge, into the corru- gated pan below.

D is the outlet, or discharge for the excess of the concentrated mat- ter, such as sulphurets, etc., while the machine i- in motion. This dis- charge is regulated by a gate or slide, which can be adjusted to any required he ght, so as to allow the proper amount of concentrated mat- ter to pass out from under the waste and lighter matter which finds its egress through the center discharge.

E is the hollow journal through which the waste matter is dis- charged.

F, the rods for supporting the pan and its contents.

G, the driving pully on the cam shaft.

H, cam for vibrating the pan. The form of this cam is an involute, whose evolute is a circle, the cam being of the proper length to give the pan a motion of about ten degrees vibration. This peculiar form gives the pan nearly an equal velocity in every part of its vibration, causing it to stop and start so suddenly as to prevent the sand from packing on the bottom of the pan.

I, a pipe for drawing off the excess of mercury as fast as it accumu- lates.

The working of the pan is substantially as follows : The pulp is fed, , as already described, into a bowl in the center of the convex disk, C, and flows out of this, evenly, over all parts of said disk, and down through the holes in its periphery, into the corrugated pan below, where the quicksilver, amalgam and heavy matter is collected by means of inclined grooves near the outlet D; the quicksilver, as fast as it increases in excess, being constantly discharged through the bowl and pipe at L, into a dish by itself, while the sulphurets, as fast as they accumulate, are discharged into another vessel through the open- ing D; the waste matter passes out through the hollow journal in the center of the pan, and is discharged at E. It will thus be seen that the entire operation of this pan is automatic, both in principle and fact. Its great advantage over pans of similar construction consists in this perpetual discharge of quicksilver and amalgam ·into one vessel, and sulphurets into another, while the machine is in motion.

PIONEER WATER CURE

-- AND -

DR. BOURNE'S BATHS,"

No. 10 MASONIC

TEMPLE,

Corner Montgomery and Post Streets,

SAN FRANCISCO,

A Entrance on Post Street, adjoining the Grand Portal. @

Thirteenth Year (1864-5,) in San Francisco.

DR. BOURNE is the only old, experienced, scientific and competent Water Cure Physician on this coast, and has IMPROVED upon the modes adopted at the East and in Europe, so that by his QUICK modes eures are effected in an almost incredible short time ; he therefore requests all persons not to diseredit him by supposing that he practices upon the SLOW system of the Hydropathic College or other SLOW practitioners.

Tag" The following diseases are enred (if curable) with the greatest celerity and at the same time in the most pleasant and agreeable manner, viz : Neuralgia, Paralysis, Rheumatism, Bronchitis, Consumption (incipient), Pleurisy, Fever and Agne, all other Fevers, Dropsy, Erysipelas, COLDS, COUGHS, OAK POISONING, (for which Dr. Bourne discovered the only scientific and certain cure.) DY.PEPSIA, "DREAMS," SEXUAL WEAKNESS, the REMOVAL OF MERCURY and all other MINERAL POISONS, etc.

jey Reasonable charges-quick eures-fair dealing, and no imposition.

"FACTS ARE STUBBORN THINGS."

During many years past I have koown my improved mode of Water Cure treatment to be the most speedy, pleasant, safe. and by far the best employed in curing homan ailments. and superior in rapidity, certainty and comfort to that pursued by European and Eastern Water Cures ; and although frequently told that such was the case, yet the parties were not possessed of sufficient acquaintance with the minutia of Eastern practice to warrant the use of their testimonials ; but at length a gentleman of education, intelligence aud habits of close and critical observation, has had the opportunity to form an opinion of my system and mode of treatment in contrast with the East- ern, in the two principal cures. This is a copy of his note :

To DR. BOURNE-DEAR SIR :- Having spent now about two months in the " Pioneer Water Cure, " allow me, on leaving you, to address a few lines of thanks to Mrs. Andrews and yourself for your kindness, and of congratulation for the success which attends your efforts in the treatment of the sick. I have been a resident for many months of two of the principal Water Cures in New York, (Dr. Trall's, in the city, and Dr Jackson's, in the western part of the State,) and had large oppor- tunities of observing their treatment and its success I feel, however, convinced that your cure differs materially from theirs, not only in its mode and energy, but in the very speedy as well as certain cure which it effects. I have, happily, no sick friends, or I would urge a trial.

I am, dear sir, very truly yours, JOHN HODY JAMES.

San Francisco, August 26, 1861.

Contrasted with English Water Cures-The best of the European.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 31, 1831 .-- Dr Bouroe-Dear Sir :- At your request I take this opportunity to inform you, over my own signature, that I was several years in three of the leading Water Cures of Great Britain, viz : at Malvern, with Drs. Gully & Wilson, at Sudbrook Park, with Dr. Ellis, and in London, with Dr. Clark, both as patient and assistant, and that having a strong par- tiality for the Water Cure system, I took every opportunity afforded by observation and reading to study the system as practiced by these distinguished physicians, and became perfectly familiar with it and know its results. I have been with Dr. Bourne upward of two years. I know his modes of treatment ; they ditler essentially from those pursued by the other gentlemen nameu. Dr. Bourne's results are equally as certain as theirs, and at ained to with much greater rapidity; in fact they would consider it preposterous to undertake the cures which Pr. Bourne effects in six or eight weeks.

ROBERT STEWART MACBETII.

AT The persistent efforts to detract from Dr. Bourne's standing as a Water Cure Physician made for some time past from inte ested and unworthy motives, has rendered it proper to publish the above estimates of the position he nollis by gentlemen competent to form a correct judgment, so that shallow pretensiou based upon the supposed superior merits of others may be unly appre- ciated. If derp and intelligent study, long experience, (more than twenty-two years. ) close and critical observation, matore years and ardent devotion to one's professioo, with a large and varied practice, constitute any claim to the confidence of a community in the qualifications of an indi- vidual as a physician, then Dr. Bourne claims that of this community, as those attributes of a physician are his.
