For some of these contributions and many others of smaller .
amount, the University is indebted to Gen. Robert D. Lilley, who for twenty years devoted himself with unremitting zeal and enthu- siasm to its interests. He was stricken with paralysis, in the midst of his usefulness, while in attendance upon the Synod of Virginia in Richmond, and died on the 12th day of November, 1886.
In June, 1873, the recumbent statue of General Lee, by Valen- tine, constructed through the agency of the " Lee Memorial Asso- ciation," was inaugurated with imposing ceremonies, and turned over to the University by the Association upon trust to be perpetu- ally cared for and preserved.
The different investments of the University are kept separate and ear-marked. A list of these is appended, which will be read with interest by the friends of the University.
In the years succeeding the great financial panic of 1873, the patronage of the University fell off largely, and a debt contracted for necessary improvements pressed heavily on the institution. But the authorities were able, by economy and the liberal use of their credit, to tide over the depressing period until some of their funds became productive and prosperity returned. The debt has

been reduced to less than $12,000, and will be paid off in the next three years from the income of the University. A handsome dwell- ing has been erected for the. Professor of Modern Languages and English, and liberal provision made for annual additions to the library and apparatus.
The authorities congratulate the Alumni, patrons and friends of the University upon its prosperity and prospects. They especially invite attention to the great progress made in all the solid elements of success in the last twenty years, as shown in this sketch. And it is their purpose to continue to press the advantages they have secured and to show that their policy is one of CONSERVATIVE PROGRESS.
