ELEMENTARY
Enrollment. Total number of days school was in session was 171. The number of pupils receiving perfect attendance was 10. The fourth grade had the largest enrollment, of 33 pupils. The average enrollment per room was 27.
Visual Education. During the year the silent projector was traded for a sound machine. The Parent-Teacher Asso-
30
ciation and the Board shared equally in the purchase of the new machine. Next year we hope to have a fund for the rental of films which will be better suited to the different grades.
Safety-Patrol. The patrol has been increased to fifteen members and the First National, Bus Terminal and Middlebury Inn crossings were added to the number of policed crossings. The patrol was awarded third prize in the annual State Parade of graded school patrols held at Burlington last fall. In May the patrol made a trip to Albany where they visited the State Educational Museum and the State Capitol Building.
HIGH SCHOOL
Enrollment. Total number of days school was in session was 175. The enrollment of 285 pupils for the year shows an increase of 12 pupils over last year and is a record for the school. Approximately 44% of the pupils were non-resident or tuition pupils. Middlebury is fortunate in having so large an enroll- ment of non-resident pupils. The tuition charge per pupil was $90.00 and the previous years report list the cost per pupil in the high school at $90.68.
H. S. Rating. The school retained the superior rating granted by the State Board of Education last year. The school is short of two items which should be met in order to retain the plate. The science laboratory is in need of new equipment and the standard time system should have more secondary clocks placed throughout the building.
Activities. In the state contest for play productions, the high school tied for second place. In other activities: the Fu- ture Farmers, the Future Home Makers, Debating, Safety-Pa- trol, Glee and Editorial Clubs, the school has enjoyed a success- full year.
Physical Education. All the pupils have had an opportun- ity to take part in an enriched program of Physical Education.
31
The obvious result of better health and more rugged bodies is realized and we are convinced that many important values result from such a program. The values of cooperation and human understanding, so valuable in a democratic society are developed in the natural setting of intra-mural activities on the playground and in the gymnasium. In setting-up exercises, pu- pils become interested in developing certain muscle areas, in improving posture and grace of carriage.
In out-of-doors sport an increasingly large number of our pupils have gone out for such sports as; skiing and skating.
The school program has brought out the various talents the young people possess and has encouraged them to be partici- pants, rather than merely spectators.
Vocational Try-Outs. A new system of Vocational Try- outs was begun this year, where-by many pupils have received actual experience in different fields of work which they wish to follow. This is but one of the many means by which the school is endeavoring to put into practice its program of guid- ance.
In closing I wish to express my deep appreciation to the officers, teachers and citizens of Middlebury for the loyal support which they have given to me during the past year.
Respectfully submitted,
TRUMAN L. BUTTERFIELD
Superintendent of Schools.
