Before the opening of the Fall term the following changes had been made: Resignations had been handed in from Miss Stella McCarthy, Miss Sedonia I. Tennien, Miss Maud Stevens and Miss Ethel M. Ryder. The Fire Hill school was closed and the teacher was not re-engaged. Miss Matilda McCormick and Miss Elizabeth Kelley were transferred from

42

the old to the new building at Fowler, and Miss Huldah O. Erickson, of Proctor, and Miss Helen E. Emerson, of Thet- ford, both graduates of the Randolph Normal school, were engaged to succeed them as teachers at the old building. Miss Randall was trasferred to the Village Primary school; Miss Raleigh to the Mills Primary school; Miss Constance Gulick, of Charlotte, a graduate of the Castleton Normal school, was engaged for the Goodnough school; Miss Madeline Eayres was given the Douglas school; and Miss Agnes Sar- gent, of Mendon, was secured for the East Pittsford school.

The above list of teachers shows that all but three of the grade teachers are graduates from Vermont Normal schools, that all teachers in the High school are college graduates, that the Supervisor of Music has had special training for her department, and that all, save two, are residents of Vermont. When necessary to fill vacancies which will occur, it should be the aim to engage only those teachers who have had special training for their work, or successful experience in

Randolph Normal.

teaching, and salaries should be made such that competent teachers may be attracted to this town and retained as long as their services warrant.

EXAMINATION OF THE EYES AND EARS.

In accordance with the law, a test of the eyesight and hearing of the pupils was made by the several teachers dur- ing the Fall term. The following is a partial report:

Number of schools in which examination was made, 15

Number of pupils examined,

377

Number of pupils found defective,

135

Per cent. of pupils found defective,

35 plus.

Of the 189 boys examined, 63 were found defective; and of 188 girls, 72 were defective. Of the 135 found defective, 113 were defective in eyesight.

The following table shows the percentage of defectives in each school. No fractions are given.

Making all due allowance for the different conditions under which the tests were made, the different ways of conducting

44

the tests by the several teachers, and such inaccuracies as would naturally occur, the above figures are sufficiently start- ling to make one wonder whether the conditions under which the pupils study, nearly six hours per day, have anything to do with bringing about such a result.

REPAIRS.

Needed repairs and improvements following out the sug- gestions made in my report of last year have been made at the Goodnough, Douglas, Hudson, Furnace and Florence school houses, making these buildings more wholesome and attractive. Extensive repairs have been made in the Mills school house, new floors having been put in, two windows added to one of the rooms, the walls tinted and new curtains hung.

A new two-room building has been erected at Fowler to relieve the congested condition at the Florence school and to avoid the necessity for transportation of the children from Fowler to the old Florence school. The Fire Hill school has been closed and the children attending this school provided for at the new building.
