We found an unusually large number of the bridges in the town in bad shape and unsafe, and to avoid acci- dents which were sure to come from further neglect, we have done an unusually large amount of bridge building, and to render the work more permanent have erected steel structures as follows: viz., At the Four Corners on the Brushwood road, one of 17 feet span. Near said Four Corners and just above the old cider mill, one of 17 feet span. Near Frank Cushman's, one of 12 feet span. On the West Newbury road across Roaring Brook, one of 17 feet. And on Waits River road near Ella Silloway's one

11

of 20 feet span. These five Steel bridges cost $610, exclu- sive of stone work and planking.

The Colby bridge has also been replaced with a steel structure, 82 feet long, costing $1630, and the one at Cass- ville 114 feet long at a cost of $2570, exclusive of planking and stonework, in each case. Several of the abutments it was necessary to rebuild, which has been done in a per- manent manner with split granite, and the plank used selected No. 1, and sawed to order.

The east end of the Craft bridge has been raised 3 feet 11 inches and the abutment built up, and the necessary grading done, at an expense of about $150, this was done under considerable disadvantage, with the many heavy teams running. This bridge is now, so surface water will not run into either end, and is in good shape for years to come. Several of the wooden bridges it has been necessary to repair, with one or more new stringers, and have been newly planked.

The south abutment to the Willard bridge near A. F. Johnson's is in an unsafe condition, and split granite cost- ing $91.20 and freight $69.25 making a total cost of $160.45 have been purchased, delivered, and paid for, to relay this, as soon as conditions will allow, and the bridge has been shored and chained up to make it safe till this can be done. The abutments at the Grist Mill bridge need repairing to render safe and prevent further trouble, which is sure to come if neglected.

As Waits' River was cutting into the road just east of Wm. Shepard's, we have stopped its further inroads by putting in about 175 loads of rubble, which was the best we could do with the material at hand.

Pile should at once be driven just north of Piermont bridge, to prevent the Connecticut river cutting across.

the highway and doing immense damage, as part of the wing is now down and sure to be worse if not attended to.

Six Automobile sign boards warning the driver of " sharp curves" and to "go slow", and a dozen guide boards, "pointing the traveler on his way" have been erected during the year, at an expense of about $30.

All of which is respectfully submitetd,
