East Arlington : "A special feature of encouragement was the addition to the church of the young people who are taking hold of the work well."

East Barre: "July 27 and 28 we observed the 25th an- niversary of the church. All of the services were attended by large and appreciative audiences. It was a red letter occasion in the history of the church. An auxiliary furnace donated by one of our members, has been placed in the basement and it is now possible to have a comfortable audience room in the coldest weather."

Gaysville: "The chief advance of the year was in sup- port of the church on the ground. An Every Member Canvass was carried out early in 1919 for that year which resulted in largely increased subscriptions. The Canvass for 1920 also showed an advance of about $100 in pledges over the pre- ceding year, notwithstanding considerable financial losses from removals. It is certainly a new experience in this church for the Treasurer to have money on hand to meet bills promptly as they become due."

Guilford: "The annual business meeting and supper on and Prayer Meeting after the business meeting was as enjoy- able a testimony and prayer meeting as I · ever attended. Every one took part and prayed."

Hartland: "Union religious services in the Town Hall Sunday nights with community singing and motion pictures. Large attendance especially from outlying farms. Troop of

87

DIRECTORS' REPORT

Boy Scouts, thirteen in number, in village. Union (cottage) prayer meetings during part of winter. Missionary appor- tionment overpaid for 1919. All bills met and balance on hand. Aid from V. D. M. S. reduced by $100. Enough pledged by Every Member Canvass to meet all needs for 1920. Prospect encouraging, but work must be done in the homes before church attendance will amount to much."

Londonderry: "It has been a trying year. Ten young and active members, leaders in work and influence, have re- moved from town. Yet the church has held its own. A new system of lighting has been installed in the meeting-house, and new hymn books purchased. All bills have been paid and the apportionment met. A better feeling is manifest on the part of outsiders towards the church, and a disposition on the part of nearly all the people to come together in one church, a result that is much to be desired and that seems possible under careful and patient administration."

Marshfield : "Annual meeting showed all bills paid and small balances in hands of different organizations. Pastor's salary increased for the coming year. $50 worth of paint on hand and paid for with which to paint meeting-house in the spring. Through money received outside of salary pastor has secured an automobile and hopes to do a more extended work the coming summer."

West Newbury: "Roads blocked more than half the time. Could not have special meetings because of this. All plans failed. However people speak encouragingly. The work is laborious because of long distances in calling. We are in need of men, men who care, and yet I find a change among them since I came a year ago. Very friendly relation between pastor and people. Outlook good. Am full of courage."

Clarendon : "We had a young man, a student for four and a half months. He was married, his wife was a real lady born and bred, seems to me she helped just as much as he did. I do not think he realized how much she did help. They lived in the parsonage and the people put enough furniture in so

88

VERMONT DOMESTIC MISSIONARY SOCIETY

that he did not have to buy even the least thing to keep house with. The people came to church."

West Fairlee: "I am working and praying for a great awakening, which has not yet come. A number of pleasant social gatherings, and about twenty-five evening prayer- meetings were held."

West Townshend: "Quite a number of non-church members attend and seem interested. The people are scarely able to increase the Pastor's salary very much if any, but they have been very prompt in payment, which is a great help."

Tyson: "The church paid its full apportionment for Congregational benevolences ($24.00) for the first time in 1919. Five children were baptized. The Sunday-School did especi- ally well and a Cradle Roll was started with twelve names. All bills of the church were promptly paid."

Simonsville: "The membership is only four, all women. One is about 90 and about to die, another is expecting to die any time with cancer, another was the wife of that man who shot up the town, as we say out West, and is not interested, and the last one does all she can for the good of the cause. But there are people here. I never saw a community more in need of the gospel message than Andover, and I have been pretty well over the West. Some of the people don't want it, but it is our duty to give it to them till they get it. The children must not be neglected. We did not organize the Sunday School till January. There are over 400 folks in the township of Andover, and only one active Congregationalist, a woman. Now what are we going to do about it? I have preached missions ever since I became a Christian, now I con- sider myself a missionary. What I can do to make Andover a Christian community remains to be seen."

A WORD ABOUT THE FUTURE

In our report last year we said we should have two finan- cial goals; the first being the making of still greater progress towards the raising of our full apportionment. That seems to

89

DIRECTORS' REPORT

have been done so far as our Society is concerned. Next we said that we should lay plans for securing our Endowment Fund of $100,000 toward which there is in hand about $40,000. On account of the World Movement Canvass no plans of this sort have been made.

We went on to speak of how an additional income of about $6,500 could be used; (1) for increase of salaries; (2) for support of Pastors-at-Large; (3) for special aiding of particular churches to become fully equiped for solving the problems of their communities; (4) for uniting with other denominations in a comprehensive plan to reach those portions of the State which no church is now nominally covering.

It is interesting to observe that with a slight change in the phraseology of the fourth purpose, virtually every one of these purposes either has been realized or is likely to be realized in connection with the plans that the Inter-church and the Congregational World Movements are forwarding. It happens that these four purposes are very nearly those that are mentioned in the Vermont Supplement to the World-Wide Survey of the Congregational World Movement.

It seems therefore that we are going to have a chance to do the things we said we would do if we had the money. Not for years has the Society faced such an opportunity Like the great Apostle in his letter to the Corinthians, the Society may say, "And a great door and effectual is opened unto me". It is also well to remember that the apostle added "and there are many adversaries". The adversaries we shall have to meet in these months and years just ahead are indeed many, but in the spirit of the dauntless Christ, we must go straight forward.

For the Directors,
