FARMERS EXCLUSIVE DIRECTORY

FOREWORD

By C. C. HUTCHINS, Secretary Chamber of Commerce Vancouver, Washington

Clarke County comprises an area of 646 square miles, of which one hundred are in cultivation. Some four hundred square miles are unim- proved but suitable for cultivation, balance is valuable for grazing.

One of the great assets of Clarke County is its especially fine system of hard-surfaced and graveled highways. By the fall of 1922 there will be nearly one hundred miles of paved highways in the county. The Pacific Highway will all be paved from the Cowlitz county line south to the Inter- state bridge; the North Bank Highway, from Vancouver to Camas; the Battle Ground Highway, from Vancouver to Heison; besides many miles throughout the St. Johns, Ridgefield, Sara and Fruit valley sections. It is thus possible for farmers throughout nearly all parts of the county to de- liver their product to, and enjoy an exchange of visits with the county's trade center and county seat, Vancouver, the year around. With its prin- cipal highways paved, funds will be released for the lateral roads radiating from them.

Clarke County is recognized today as one of the leading prune growing districts of the United States, there being, in 1922, over five thousand acres of bearing prune orchards, with one thousand acres additional in younger trees. Eighty-five per cent of this crop is handled through a co-operative organization, known as the Washington Growers' Packing Corporation. This organization is equipped with a large, modern warehouse, on trackage, where the products of its members are assembled, sorted, packed, stored and shipped. This corporation, in addition to a large domestic business, is mak- ing export shipments to all parts of the world, handling for its members prunes, strawberries and potatoes.

The farmers of Clarke County take pride in producing the highest possible grade of whatever they undertake to produce. This is indicated by Clarke County producing more certified seed potato stock than any other seed producing section in the northwest, its certified acreage being doubled for 1922. There are several thousand acres, ideally located, and con- ditioned, within the county for increasing the potato production.

The walnut and filbert, commercially grown, receive a great deal of at- tention, with a very substantial acreage set, many orchards having already reached the commercial bearing stage.

Approximately two hundred acres are devoted to the culture of straw- berries. This acreage is being increased, the 1922 production being estimat- ed to run at over sixty thousand crates. A large cannery of the Oregon Packing Company consumes about half of this crop.

Another prominent industry throughout Clarke County is that of poultry, and this county is rapidly becoming one of the principal egg shipping points of the northwest. Ample storage facilities, both cold and dry, and meeting the requirements of the grower and broker for the handling of fruits, vegetables and poultry, are provided at Vancouver.

Transportation facilities of Clarke County consist of four transconti- nental railways: S. P. & S., Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and O. W. R. R. & N., Columbia river shipping, deep sea shipments from Vancou- ver's municipal dock, frequent electric service to Portland, and electric service to several suburban towns within the county. Vancouver is the junction point of the North Bank and Pacific Highways.

Among other prominent operations within the county are a number of large sawmills, foundries, flour mill, Vancouver and Washougal woolen mills, the Crown-Willamette Paper company's plant at Camas, which is one of the largest in the United States.

The extensive shipbuilding plant of the Standifer Construction Com- pany, which employed three thousand men, is located in Vancouver, on port property. This extensive tract, with its many substantial buildings, is now available for large industrial operations.

The service rendered by the varied mercantile establishments of Van- couver, and other centers of the county, make it possible and desirable for the citizens of Clarke County to do their trading within the confines of their county.

Climatic conditions of Clarke County are mild and equitable through- out the year, with a long growing season and freedom from damaging storms.

DO YOUR BUYING AT HOME

To change the application of a now famous sentence of Abraham Lin- coln, when we buy away from home we get the goods and lose the money; when we buy at home we have both the goods and the money.

The man who buys from a mail order house without first giving local houses a chance to talk business with him on the same articles does the mer- chant, the community, his family and himself a serious harm. Did that buyer ever stop to ask himself questions like these?

Does that mail order house help support your home schools?

Does that mail order house help support your county or city govern- ment through taxes ?

Does that mail order house ever help build a church or Y. M. C. A. building in your county ?

Did that mail order house ever subscribe toward your entertainments, your Fourth of July celebration, your fair?

Does that mail order house ever extend you credit to tide you over a "tight" time?

Does that mail order house help make your newspapers possible?

Did that mail order house ever spend one cent toward making yours a bigger and better town? Have you ever asked the mail order house for credit?

These and a hundred kindred questions must be answered in the negative.

The patron of mail order houses is penny wise and pound foolish. He sacrifices a larger community good, which means greater good for himself, for the petty immediate gain of a few cents.

AN UNPATRIOTIC SACRIFICE

To sacrifice our neighborhood-the man who helps the town with Its taxes, with its public business, with its myriad activities for neighborly righteousness-to sacrifice that man and his business for the mere sake of saving a dollar on the purchase of a hundred dollars' worth of goods is just as unpatriotic as it is to spit at the flag.

For the flag, if it means anything means the golden rule; the flag means friendly burden bearing; it means mutual help in trouble; it means standing together against common foes.

THE MOTTO OF THE MAIL ORDER HOUSE

The motto of the mail order house is every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost-and you bet the devil will.

THE ULTIMATE RESULT

That spirit never fails to work; and the weak man, the unprotected man, the man alone-the man of the farm, at the end of the fact, when his farm market is gone, when his town is gone, when the spirit of selfishness and greed has left this country cold and hard and mean and neighborless- the farmer will be the hindermost.
