INTRODUCTION

The Wright Directory Co., herewith present to its patrons the 1922 edition of the Milwaukee City Directory. The work embodies all available and vital information concerning the various interests and activities of the city --- Commercial, Financial, Social and Indus- trial.

The several features of the work which have given such satis- faction to patrons in former issues, have been retained, while several . have been amplified and improved, as suggested by experience.

The statistics following this introduction are impressive as in- dicating the wealth, industry and culture of the city and of the ter- ritory of which Milwaukee is the center.

The several essential departments of the work are compiled in the order following. 5007483

The MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT, covering pages 15 to 35, embraces data concerning the city executive, health, police, fire, educational, parks, water works and other departments, Federal and State officials, churches, schools (public and private), the post office, courts, consulates, hospitals, associations, fraternal and ben- evolent organizations, etc.

THE BUYERS' GUIDE occupies pages 37 to 232. This section of the Directory, printed on tinted paper, includes hundreds of ad- vertisements of the leading manufacturing, business and profes- sional interests of Milwaukee. They have been carefully grouped by departments and are indexed under classified headings and other- wise in various parts of the Directory. A casual perusal of these advertisements will picture many interesting phases of the city's activities. They are not display advertisements, primarily, however, but rather are reference advertising at its best. The purpose of a Directory is to direct. In a bustling, manufacturing city like Mil- waukee the need for this kind of information readily at hand is very great, and the general appreciation of this need is evidenced by the liberal patronage the City Directory enjoys in many and varied lines of trade.

The ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of citizens, firms, corporations, institutions, and full information respecting them, is included in pages 233 to 1767; in this feature of the Directory the wife's name follows that of her husband.

The STREET and AVENUE GUIDE and DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS is contained in pages 1768 to 2245.

The CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY occupies pages 2249 to 2484 and exhibits the various manufacturing, mercantile and pro- fessional names compiled under headings appropriate to the class of industry or profession followed.

The INDEX TO CONTENTS and INDEX TO ADVERTISE- MENTS will be found on pages 11 to 14.

POPULATION OF GREATER MILWAUKEE

The present volume has an enrollment of 229,950 names for the area covered by the Directory. This number multiplied by 2 2-5 to allow for the women and children not included in the canvass- gives "Greater Milwaukee" an estimated population of 551,880.

This includes Shorewood and West Milwaukee, also the names of the citizens of the neighboring municipalities of West Allis, Wauwatosa, North Milwaukee, St. Francis, South Milwaukee, Cudahy, etc., who are in business or are employed in Milwaukee, for they are practically a part of Greater Milwaukee.

Milwaukee is one of the largest industrial centers of the United States, and produces a more diversified line of manufacture than any other city. It draws its supply of raw materials in convenient prox- imity; secures its fuel by the Great Lakes water route at low rates; has ample transportation connections with the four ends of the earth; enjoys a skillful, industrious and peaceful labor constituency.

As a commercial center it possesses some decided advantages. As the metropolis of the great State of Wisconsin it has become an important distributing center of all commodities. Its jobbing and wholesale houses, which have grown into great commercial enter- prises, have extended their trade connections far beyond the boun- daries of the state.

Harbor-One of the best on the Great Lakes. Navigation open all the year around. Fourteen steamship lines, including two car ferries, operating across Lake Michigan, three lines of break-bulk steamers; six lines of steamers connecting with the lower lakes,

THE MILWAUKEE ASSOCIATION OF COMMERCE

The Milwaukee Association of Commerce is a live organization which has had much to do with the progress of the city and is responsible for many of its more modern tendencies. It is repre- sentative of the commercial, professional and manufacturing inter- ests of the city, and had its inception in a desire to promote the city's growth in home building, in manufacturing industries, in city improvement and in commercial importance. Since its incepton this organization has been behind every forward movement for community betterment and it has achieved success in extending the commercial interests of the city. One of its principal purposes is to bring the citizens of the community together in real co-operative effort to comprise all differences of effort and to work harmoniously for community advancement.

The Association maintains a Credit Bureau where upwards of three hundred thousand cards are on file and available to those members seeking information along these lines; a Traffic Depart- ment which has been of inestimable service to the public generally and in times of transportation stress besides aiding various individ- uals and concerns in specific cases of traffic difficulty; a Better Business Bureau which, by a campaign for truth in advertising, is estimated to have saved business men and the city approximately one-half million dollars in the past year; a Convention and Publicity Bureau, which is instrumental in bringing more than two hundred conventions to the city annually, with several millions of dollars in money; a Safety division which has been responsible for mater- ially reducing the toll of death and mutilation by accidents, with their consequent loss to industry, and various other departments of equal value to the community.

The Association has a membership considerably in excess of four thousand, and is constantly growing. As this membership grows and new interests are enrolled the activities of the Association are extended to the end that finally there shall be no commercial or industrial interest represented in the membership of the Milwaukee Association of Commerce to which that Association does not offer something specific in the way of service that is well worth the trifling cost of the membership.

Some of the biggest enterprises undertaken by the City of Mil- waukee in the past few years either have had their inception with the Milwaukee Association of Commerce or have been put through largely because of the active support accorded by this Association.

Inquiries for specific information concerning Milwaukee and its business or civic aspects, will be welcomed and promptly answered by the Association of Commerce.
