If it is true that he is a benefactor who causes two blades of grass to grow where only one grew before, then it may be said that he who causes two faets to stand out in bold relief where only one faet appeared before, is a friend to truth and a conservator of history ; and if he brings a multitude of facts that otherwise would have been lost to sight, surely he is to be commended, and his motives not to be misconstrued. The author of this work needs not to apologize for bringing it forth. He has put upon record a multitude of facts that might have passed into oblivion, as far as the memory of man is concerned, had he not taken occasion to fix them on paper as he himself remembered them, and as hundreds of others will attest, for the perusal of the future historian.
Already the general results of the war are well known to every sindent of history, for the late war has now passed into history ; but the thousands of incidents that appeared then to be of no importance have yet proved to be the piv- otai points upon which many an engagement turned, and they are set forth in the light in which they appeared to the observant soldier, whose duty was to go and to come at the bidding of his superior officer. It was not his privilege to say yea or nay, but simply to obey. By no means was the American volunteer soldier a machine. Often was it the case that he who simply wore the blue, without insig- nia of office of any kind, was possessed of an insight as

penetrating into the events that were passing about him as was that of those whose duty it was to direct the issues of the campaign. This may be said truthfully of the Ameri- can volunteer, that, taken collectively, they rarely ever ar- rived at a wrong conclusion in the movement that was being made, aud this without communication with their superior officers. They conversed freely with each other while around the picket fire, and intelligently forecasted the operations of their superiors, and not infrequently were pungent criticisms indulged in that would have cost them their hope of preferment ; for every soldier hoped that in some way his services would be recognized, and that he might be able to go back to his people, if not with the in- signia of promotion, at least with the commendation of his superior officers, that would enable him to look the whole world in the face.
The author of this book has made the various situa- tions from 1861 to 1865 a careful study, and having been continually at the front during all that period, and having been a close student of all that was going on about him, he possesses a vantage ground from which he can take a broad survey of all the events of that period. Much of the time his opportunities for obtaining information were of the best, and while it was his duty to serve with closed lips, his ear was alert for everything that would tend to enlighten him upon what was going on. Often entrusted with the execu- tion of important orders, his opportunities for observation were enlarged, and, being careful to keep a record of the daily doings of the army with which he was connected, he created a fund of information that for usefulness far sur- passed anything that he then suspected, for when he con- ceived the idea of writing up the annals of his regiment, he found himself possessed of a vast amount of material that was like a reflected image, for it was the record of the hour and the place. But that was not all. His experience had prepared him to bring to his assistance the best testi- mony that could be obtained concerning the various cam- paigns in which his regiment was engaged. He has pro-

cured documents that emanated in the hour of engagement, under the showers of shot and shell, amidst the roar of battle, the huzzahs of victory, or in sight of the panic, it may be, that almost invariably attended defeat. Some of these documents are of more than ordinary interest, as they throw a strong light upon the motives that actuated the authorities on either side. Some have been prepared by the survivors of the war, who occupied prominent positions and wielded great influence, and the testimony will be of particular interest to all who participated in the battles de- seribed as reflecting the intention that was behind each movement. Letters have been written embracing events that would have faded from memory, and as they are thus brought to mind, they will find corroboration in the minds of many who participated in the actions described.
This volume will prove to be of great value to the student of the late war ; first, because no pains have been spared to secure accuracy, and second, every form of exag- geration or laudation has been carefully excluded.
