THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON.

The city of Huntington has fully 11,000 inhabitants. The Ensign Car Works are located here and employ in the neighborhood 1,100 men. The success of these works has been great, and is largely due to the advantages of a location that gives the company cheap fuel, cheap iron and cheap lumber.

The C. & O. R. R's principal shops are located here. employing at least 500 men. The leading religious denominations are represented here, and have good church buildings, and able and zealous men for pastors. Full directory for each church will be found in this book. The Hebrews have secured a splendid corner lot and will erect a mag- nificant temple on it. Huntington's Public Schools are of the very best, having four large buildings which cost about $70,000. In addi- tion to the public schools, Marshall College, the largest normal school in the State, is centrally located here. It is the county seat of Cabell, and splendid public buildings will be erected on the south side of Fifth avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets. As a place for business or investment, Huntington has no superior in the State.

HUNTINGTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

The schools of Huntington, keeping pace with the growth of the city, have made marked progress, and now rank with the best in the state. The city's bniblings are constantly inadequate.

The oldest building, comprising eight rooms, is located on Fourth avenue near Seventh street. Another of four rooms is on the corner of Third avenne and Twenty-second street. In 1888 was completed a ten room building at the junction of Fifth avenne and Thirteenth street, which is modern and first class in all its appointments, being fitted with the best of desks, heated and ventilated by the Smead sys- tem, and provided with the Smead dry closets.

Another building of eight rooms will be completed by September, 1891, at the corner of Sixth avenne and Twentieth street; and at the saine time one of four rooms for the negro scholars will be built on Sixteenth street, both to be first class in every respect.

The teaching force now consists of a superintendent, teacher of vocal music and thirty-two teachers, and the enrollment of pupils. is 1612.

The course of study in our schools is fully up to the best, and is administered by an earnest and efficient corps of teachers.

The course inchides nine years of eight months each, and a high

school course of three years, which will this year be lengthened to four years.

Aside from the regular branches of study, pupils are daily in- structed in vocal music, drawing and physical culture. The high school course includes careful instruction in literature, current topics and elocution, with a special practical course of two years in book keeping. A special feature in the schools from the sixth grade up- ward is the daily instruction in composition under a special teacher. and excellent results are apparent.

A monthly magazine, "The School Mirror," is published by the superintendent, which is doing a good work in harmonizing patrons and teachers, giving to the people a clear understanding of the meth- ods of the schools, and furnistring an incentive to pupils to do good composition work.

The system of examinations is snch as to avoid stagnancy of intel- lect on the part of the teachers, in that instead of re-examining each year. those holding first grade certificates are examined on two or three additional studies each year, and credits for these added to their certificates.

Our citizens are justly as proud of their schools as of any other feature of our thriving young city.
