GENERAL INFORMATION

GOOD SERVICE

depends largely upon the measure of co-operation accorded the Telephone Company by the public. The observance of the following suggestions and instructions will greatly facilitate the successful operation of the service from all standpoints.

BEFORE CALLING.

Refer to the Latest Directory. Numbers called from memory are often incorrectly given. A wrong number delays the caller, annoys the person called and retards the service.

Call "Information" to obtain numbers of sub- scribers who have taken service since Directory was issued.

CALLING.

When the operator asks, "Number, please?" give the name of the central office and the number wanted. Speak close to the mouthpiece in a clear tone of voice. Hold the telephone receiver to the ear until a reply is received from the number called for.

To attract the operator's attention move the tele- phone hook SLOWLY up and down. Do not move the hook rapidly, as a rapid movement does not signal the operator.

When calling from a party line station having a designating letter, give the letter of your station upon request from the operator.

Do not replace the receiver on the hook until con- versation is finished. To do so is to signal the operator to disconnect.

ANSWERING.

Answer Calls Promptly. Failure to do so keeps the calling party waiting and may result in the loss of a message.

In answering calls, do not say "Hello," but ANNOUNCE YOUR NAME or the name of your firm.

A party line subscriber should not remove the receiver from the hook while the bell is ringing as another subscriber on the line then may be rung in error.

IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY

For the good of the service, subscribers' contracts call the Chief Operator and report the nature of the [ provide that no instrument or appliance other than trouble, using another telephone, if necessary.

IDENTIFICATION OF EMPLOYEES.

Employees who are authorized to examine, exchange or remove any of this Company's apparatus, are furnished with a metal badge, showing a "Bell," this Company's name and a number. Subscribers are requested not to allow access to their premises unless applicants are able to furnish this means of identifica- tion.

FREE MESSAGES.

No charge will be made-

For emergency messages to city or town departments or hospitals, in case of fire, accident, sickness, etc. In such a case state to the operator that the message is an "emergency" one. .

For messages from any station to the Company's local offices, or to the Company's business offices in the district.

UNAUTHORIZED USE OF THE TELEPHONE.

The use of a subscriber's telephone is limited to the subscriber, his family or employees in his interest. Subscribers have no right to allow its use by other I receive telegrams or cablegrams by telephone.

parties. The telephone may be removed if this con- dition of the contract is disregarded. Subscribers are requested to refer those desiring the use of the tele- phone to the nearest PUBLIC TELEPHONE.

REMOVALS.

Subscribers wishing telephone service disconnected should give notice in writing to the Local Business Office of the district in which the telephone is located, in accordance with the wording of their contracts.

Requests for the moving of instruments from one location to another must be made in writing to the Local Business Office of the district in which the telephone is located. Ten (10) days' notice must be given in such cases.

TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES.

Directories are issued three times a year-namely, February, May and October. Notifications of desired changes or corrections of listings should be received in the Business Office at least ten (10) days prior to the dates of issue. The exact date of each issue is advertised in the newspapers.

The Company assumes no liability for damages arising from errors or omissions in the making up or printing of the Directory.

IT MAY BECOME NECESSARY TO CHANGE NUMBERS.

Subscribers should bear this in mind when having printing done, and we urge that the words " Bell Tele- phone" be used in advertising instead of the number.

ATTACHMENTS TO TELEPHONES.

those furnished by the Company shall be used in connection with its telephones and lines.

Such foreign attachments-supposed to eliminate noise, destroy . germs, etc-are always unnecessary and frequently detrimental to the service. All appli. ances necessary for good telephone service will be furnished by the Telephone Company.

TELEGRAMS BY TELEPHONE-Call by NAME.

To facilitate sending telegrams and cablegrams, patrons should call by NAME for the Postal Telegraph- Cable Company, or the Western Union Telegraph Company.

Postal Telegraph-Cable Company-Call "POSTAL."

Patrons calling "POSTAL" will be connected with the office designated by that Company to receive tele. grams of cablegrams by telephone.

Western Union Telegraph Company-Call " WESTERN UNION."

Patrons calling "WESTERN UNION" will be con. nected with the office designated by that Company to

1

GENERAL INFORMATION

By arrangement with the Western Union Telegraph Company. the charges for Western Union telegraph messages filed by telephone may be billed by the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company on tele- phone bills as rendered.

Patrons calling telegraph companies for any other purpose than to send a telegram or cablegram should call by number in the usual manner.

PUBLIC TELEPHONES.

The charge for messages from Public Telephones to stations within the local service area is five cents for each five minutes or fraction thereof.

Public Telephones are equipped with coin boxes and the amount deposited is automatically signalled. When making calls from such telephones follow instructions on com box. Do not deposit any money until requested by operator.

In case that deposit in excess of proper amount has been made, call the Chief Operator, who will arrange for a refund.

LONG DISTANCE CALLS.

A Long Distance call is one made for a connection outside the local service area. A particular person will be obtained, if so requested at the time of making the call.

On Long Distance calls, an initial CHARGE applies for the first three (3) minutes; an additional charge is made for each minute, or fraction thereof, beyond the initial three-minute period.

A partial list of Long Distance points, together with the toll rates from Huntington and Logan will be found on page 3. For rates to other points, call " Long Distance."

To Make a Long Distance Call, ask for "Long Dis tance " When the Long Distance operator answers. give her the following details:

The number of the telephone from which you are calling and your name.

The telephone number desired (if known) and the city or town, and state.

The person or firm under whose name the desired telephone is listed, and the street address if the telephone number is not known.

If a particular person is desired, give the name and initials: also the name of an alternate person . with whom you will speak if the first-named person cannot be reached.

If neither the particular' person called nor a satis- factory alternate person can be reached, NO charge will be made, except for messenger service, if any.

If NO particular person is named in giving the call, the regular toll rate will be charged when connection is made with the telephone NUMBER called.

Messenger Service. If the person desired cannot be directly reached by telephone, a messenger, upon request, will be sent to summon him. The actual cost of such messenger service will be charged, in addition to the telephone toll rate.

Appointment Calls. Appointment to talk at a specified time may be arranged by advising the Long Distance operator the time at which connection is desired. No extra charge will be made for appoint- ment calls (except for messenger service, if any is involved), but the Telephone Company cannot guar- antee the completion of the connection at the exact time specified.

Collect Calls. Charges on a Long Distance call, including any messenger charges, may be made against the telephone called, provided that the called party accepts such charges. Request to have the charges made "Collect" must be made when the call is given to the Long Distance operator.

PARTY LINE COURTESY

The quality of service on a party line is largely dependent upon the cooperation of the subscribers on that line. No subscriber should use a party line for long periods of time, to the total exclusion of others.

When a party line is found to be in use, it is the part of courtesy to hang up your receiver immediately. While it is off the hook the conversation is interfered with.

Every neighbor on a party line is entitled to the use of the telephone service as well as every other. The Golden Rule applies with particular force to party line telephone service.
