Population, 14,000. It is the county seat of Lawrence county, situated on the Ohio river, 142 miles above Cin- cinnati and 195 miles below Wheel- ing, W Va. The Norfolk & Western and Cincinnati, Dayton & Hamilton railroads pass through, and it is the southern terminus of the Detroit Southern R R. It also has ferry con- nection with the Chesapeake & Ohio R R. The principal industries are pig and bar iron manufacture, lumber, carriage, nail, brick, stove and plow works, and many others.
