H. A. LASELL .- As secretary and accountant of the "Emporium of Contra Costa County," the largest department store in the county, with its fourteen completely stocked departments catering to the trade of the people of the entire county, H. A. Lasell finds his time fully occupied with his ever-increasing duties of the fast-growing business established in Martinez in 1886 by L. M. Lasell, now the pioneer merchant of Mar- tinez. A native of New York State, H. A. Lasell was born on June 25, 1894, near Ellenburg Depot, Clinton County, the son of Marshall M. and Addie (Bond) Lasell. The father is a brother of L. M. Lasell of Martinez, and is still living, aged about seventy years. He is a native of Vermont but was married in New York, his wife having been born near Ellenburg Depot.

H. A. Lasell is the youngest of five children and is the only one in California. He grew up in New York State and attended the grammar and high schools of Ellenburg Depot, and while in his senior year in 1910, he came out to California on a visit. He became interested in his uncle's store and entered the employ of L. M. Lasell and Company as office clerk when the store occupied the old wooden buildings, which are still standing at the corner of Castro and Thompson Streets. From bookkeeper he rose to his present position through the various channels of the business, and he is held in the highest esteem by all connected with the great establishment.

Mr. Lasell was married on October 16, 1915, at San Rafael, to Miss Elsie Burns, born in Oregon but reared in Sacramento, Cal. Mr. and Mrs. Lasell have two children, Margaret and Muriel. The family attend the Congregational Church and Mrs. Lasell is a member of the Ladies' Aid Society. Fraternally, Mr. Lasell is a member of the Woodmen of the World. He applies his whole time and energy to business during working hours, and for recreation he seeks the streams where are to be found the game fish for which California is noted; and he seldom returns without having caught the limit. The family reside in their comfortable home at 717 Arlington Way, in Martinez.

LEWIS JAMES HISLOP .- The secretary of the California Art Tile Company at Richmond is L. J. Hislop, a native son of the Golden State, born at Lincoln, Placer County, on June 4, 1899, a son of J. W. Hislop, president and founder of the corporation mentioned above. L. J. attended the public schools at Inglewood, Los Angeles County, and at an early age began working in clay until he has become a practical man in the manufacture of the products put out by this enterprising concern. After leaving school Mr. Hislop went to New York, where he spent about fourteen months, then was in Chicago for a year. Returning to California he became associated with his father in business and has been with him in his different removals ever since. Upon the organiza- tion of the California Art Tile Company Mr. Hislop was elected treas- urer, later becoming secretary, and is giving his entire time and attention to the growing business of the firm. They now occupy a very modern structure in Richmond and turn out products that find a market in many parts of the world.

On July 19, 1923, Mr. Hislop was united in marriage with Miss Fay Anita Farley, born in Carpentersville, Ill., the only child of her parents, who now reside at Richmond. This happy union has been blessed with two children, Patricia Ruth and James Lewis. Mr. Hislop belongs to Alpha Lodge No. 431, F. & A. M., at Richmond, and both himself and wife are members of Mira Mar Chapter of the Eastern Star. They hold an assured place in their social set in Richmond, where they have an ever increasing circle of warm friends.

FRANK AUSEZ .- One of the leading cement contractors in Rich- mond and vicinity is Frank Ausez of No. 2100 Burbeck Avenue, Rich- mond. He was born in Austria on December 3, 1883, one of five chil- dren in the family of Frank and Catherine Ausez. His father was a builder and it was natural that Frank, Jr., should take to the building trade. After finishing his education in his native land, in 1905, Mr. Ausez landed in America and crossed the continent to Lafayette, Colo .. where he spent three years. After this he traveled through the north- west looking for a suitable place to pitch his tent and in 1909 landed in Richmond. After some deliberation he concluded he would try his luck here and began work as a concrete and cement contractor, a business he had become competent to handle in every department. From the first he was successful and as the years have passed he has had his share of the cement and concrete work in this locality and has done considerable bridge and street work. As he has prospered he has invested in property and owns his own home and is well satisfied that he cast in his lot with Contra Costa County. He became a full-fledged American citizen in San Francisco in 1919.

Mr. Ausez was married on November 9, 1913, to Miss Mary Yane- zich, also a native of Austria and a daughter of John and Annie Yane- zich. She has one brother living in Richmond. Mr. and Mrs. Auser

have three children: Frankie C., Annie and Frances. Mr. Ausez is a member of the Builders' Exchange and takes an active interest in its meetings. He belongs to the Woodmen of the World, the Red Men and the Richmond Elks. To help boost the city of his choice he is a member of the Chamber of Comerce. For rest and recreation Mr. Ausez likes to hunt and fish and is fond of watching athletic sports of all kinds. He is a busy man but not too busy but that he can lend a helping hand, when necessary, to promote the best interests of Richmond and the East Bay District.

JAMES S. HIGUERA .- Endowed by nature with an active mind, a cheerful disposition, and a resolute will, James S. Higuera began life for himself when a mere lad, and has met with deserved success in his under- takings. He is well-known in the business circles of Martinez, and was an employee of the Alhambra Market for a period of thirteen years. Be- ginning his life work when only twelve years of age, Mr. Higuera first worked for A. B. Catt; then, in 1910, he came to Martinez, where he began working for the Alhambra Market. On April 16, 1924, he bought the Quality Market, at 737 Ferry Street, which was sold under the sheriff's hammer, its former owners having failed to make good. This he closed out about one year later.

Coming of Spanish ancestry, James S. Higuera was born on August 3, 1891, at Pinole, Contra Costa County, Cal., the youngest in a family of five children born to Frank and Virginia (Rojes) Higuera, both of early Spanish families of the Bay section of California. Frank Higuera was an expressman by occupation; he passed away in 1910, aged fifty-six years; the mother is now living in Martinez. James S. Higuera grew up at Rodeo, Cal., and there attended the public schools until he was twelve years old, when he began to make his own way in the world, beginning at the bottom of the ladder and steadily working toward the top.

Mr. Higuera's marriage occurred on September 9, 1911, and united him with Miss Ethel McDonald, born at Clayton, Contra Costa County. Of this union there are seven children: Velda and Verda (twins), Don- ald, Eleanor, Le Verne, John, and Edith. Mr. Higuera is a Republican in politics. With his family he belongs to the Catholic Church.

CAMILLO LANZAFAME .- The life which this brief narrative sketches began in Aci, Catania, Italy, in the Island of Sicily, April 30, 1889, when Camillo Lanzafame was born to Delpho and Rose Lanza- fame. Their family consisted of thirteen children, eleven of whom are living, eight boys and three girls, Camillo being the only member of the family in America. Delpho Lanzafame, the father, was a wholesale dealer in groceries and provisions in Italy.

When Camillo Lanzafame was seventeen years of age, he started out to make his own way in the world, sailing in 1906 to New York City. His first employment in America was secured at Lawrence, Mass., where he remained one year. He then migrated to California, locating at

Pittsburg in 1907, and there worked as a barber for some time. In 1915 Mr. Lanzafame established his present furniture business, in which he has been quite successful. Being of a happy and genial nature, he posses- ses the faculty of making and keeping many friends, which is an asset of inestimable value in business. In 1919 H. H. Summer, of the Summer Lumber Company, a brother-in-law, became associated with Mr. Lanza- fame as his partner in the furniture and household furnishing business : and by courteous treatment of their patrons, strict attention to the de- tails of business and honorable dealings with all, they are together build- ing up a large and growing business and enjoying the confidence of the community.

On February 25, 1917, Camillo Lanzafame was united in marriage with Miss Susie Viscuso, a daughter of the late G. Viscuso and his widow. Aquilina Viscuso honored pioneers of Pittsburg. Mr. and Mrs. Lanza- fame had one child, a son, Delpho. Mrs. Lanzafame died on February 26, 1920. Mr. Lanzafame has illustrated by his success the results of energy, thrift, and wise and judicious management of business affairs.

JOHN N. ASMUSSEN .- The competent superintendent for the Blake Brothers Company at their quarry in Richmond is John N. Asmus- sen, a capable workman who has taken an active interest in developing the business for his company. He was born at Russell, Cal., on October 23, 1887, a son of Thomas and Johanna Asmussen, both born in Den- mark. He has one brother, Andy Asmussen, in Russell, and two sisters, Annie, (Mrs. W. Fletcher) and May, (Mrs. Ollie Davis) living in San Francisco.

John N. Asmussen attended the Russell and San Francisco public schools, and a night school for a time, and then served an apprenticeship as a machinist. His first work was with the George E. Dow Pump Works, where he remained till April, 1907. In 1908 he began with Blake Brothers as a machinist and one year later was promoted to be foreman of their plant. On November 1, 1917, he was made superin- tendent, the position he still holds. Mr. Asmussen has been instrumental in the growth of the plant and served as a director for a year. The largest shot fired in blasting at the quarry was twenty-three tons of powder, and the longest cut was an eighty foot fill 220 feet across. Mr. Asmussen thoroughly understands his work and is popular with the men under his direction.

On March 9, 1909, Mr. Asmussen and Miss Anna McNamara were united in marriage of Russell. She is the daughter and only child of Michael and Theresa ( Murray) McNamara. Mr. McNamara was born in Ireland and is an old employee of the Southern Pacific. Mrs. Asmussen attended the grammar and high schools, and Heald's Business College of Oakland. They have one son, Edward, now sixteen years old and a pupil in the high school in Richmond. Mrs. Asmussen is a mem- ber of the Alpha Lodge of Masons and the Richmond Elks. The family are well and favorably known in the East Bay section.

ELLWOOD ORMSBEE MITCHELL .- Holding the responsible position of head gauger for the Shell Oil Company, at their plant in Mar- tinez, for the past ten years Mr. Mitchell has filled an important place in the business and social life of Contra Costa County. A native Califor- nian, he was born in Pasadena on February 3, 1889, the son of Albert A. and Eva E., (Baty) Mitchell. The father was a native of Virginia, and was district agent for one of the large wholesale coffee houses in Los Angeles, in which city his death occurred in 1915. The mother is still living, residing in Oakland. They were the parents of four children, Ell- wood being the only one residing in Contra Costa County.

Ellwood Ormsbee Mitchell attended the Los Angeles grammar schools, and later graduated from the high school at San Jose with the class of 1911, after which he took a special law course at Stanford Uni- versity. Becoming interested in the oil industry, he went to work for the Pinal Dome Oil Company in the Santa Maria field, and remained with that company for three and one-half years. In 1916 he came to Martinez and became a gauger for the Shell Oil Company, and one year later was promoted to the position of head gauger, which position he now holds.

The marriage of Mr. Mitchell, in 1921, at Martinez, united him with Miss Louise Helen Grothman; and they are now the parents of a son, Norwood Ormsbee. Having taken an active interest in sports, both at high school and during his university training, Mr. Mitchell has main- tained that interest and is still an enthusiastic tennis player and baseball fan; and he is a member of the Contra Costa Golf Club. He. is a mem- ber of the Alumni Association of Stanford University, and is a man of broad and keen vision, taking a live interest in current events, and doing all in his power to help in general welfare work.

DUDLEY DEAN WATSON .- Among the men of Contra Costa County who are building up the horticultural and agricultural interests for future generations we find Dudley Dean Watson, of Brentwood, tak- ing a leading part. He believes the possibilities are good for eastern Contra Costa County to become the greatest fruit growing center in the State, and to show his faith he has purchased raw land and is developing it. Mr. Watson owns 311 acres of land, which he has planted to alfalfa and orchards, and upon which he now raises vegetables; he also has 689 acres under a fifteen-year lease from Horace L. Hill, Jr., of San Fran- cisco. In addition to developing his own property he deals in real estate and does a general development of property for those who wish such work done. He is caring for and developing 750 acres for the Blyth- Witter Company and the Brentwood Orchards Company. Mr. Watson has developed an organization, having the most experienced engineers and the best men available in their various lines to carry on property de- velopment, such as mentioned above, under his personal supervision. In 1926 he engineered the development work on fifty various parcels of land in this district. In selling property he endeavors to interest that class of settlers who will mean much to the county in the future, among

whom we mention H. W. Poett, who bought forty acres, which Mr. Wat- son has developed to apricots ; H. P. Garin, the largest vegetable shipper on the Pacific Coast, who purchased two tracts of 125 acres each, one- half of the property being planted to lettuce and the other half being set to apricots, peaches and standard nectarines.

Mr. Watson has about the most perfect organization for the develop- ment and managing of land and land improvement, to be found any- where. In 1926 he erected one of the largest, if not the largest, packing and shipping house in this district on the Santa Fe Railroad at Bixler ; he has plans under way for a dehydrating and sun drying plant, and for shipping green fruit to the markets and canneries from one unit, thereby cutting down the expenses of handling the products as they now are being handled. He also deals in nursery stock and represents the Silva-Berk- holdt Nursery Company at Newcastle, Cal .; also the Gregory Brothers Nurseries of Brentwood and Marysville.

D. D. Watson was born in San Francisco, on December 5, 1895. His parents are W. A. and Margaret (Jones) Watson, natives of Cali- fornia and Kentucky, respectively. W. A. Watson owned ranches in Yolo and Colusa Counties, became a very successful farmer, and is now living retired in Berkeley. The son attended the schools in Colusa County, graduating from the joint high school with the Class of 1914. He soon after entered the employ of H. L. Hill, Jr., on his Toyon Farm near Los Altos, Santa Clara County, and had been advanced to purchas- ing agent when the World War broke out. He enlisted in the air ser- vice and served twenty-two months over seas, testing airplanes and motors, and doing repair work. He rose to be a first class flight sergeant and was on the front at the Meuse in a German airdrome when the armis- tice was signed. Returning to the United States he was honorably dis- charged at San Diego in April, 1919. Reentering the employ of Mr. Hill that same summer he signed a fifteen-year lease for Westwind Farms, Brentwood. In February, 1924, he bought the Estes ranch of 311 acres.

In August, 1919, D. D. Watson was married to Florence Grossman, daughter of Mrs. Lucy Grossman, and they have three children: Jeanne Marie, Dudley Dean; Jr., and Robert Hayden. He is a member of the American Legion Post at Brentwood, the Stockton Elks, and the Union League Club in San Francisco. He is a stanch supporter of the Chamber of Commerce and Farm Bureau.
