Oakland Free Public Library and Central Reading Room, north side Fourteenth, near City Hall.
The Free Library was first opened to the public on the even- ing of November 7, 1878, with about four thousand volumes on its shelves. It has steadily gained in popular favor, having now 9,369 members on the library roll. July 1, 1892, it was shown to possess 21,163 volumes.
The library is open (Sundays and holidays excepted) from 9 A. M. until 8 P. M .; Saturdays, from 9 A. M. until 9 P. M.
The central reading room, which is located in the same building, has on file all the principal newspapers published on the Pacific Coast, together with the most prominent journals and magazines of the East, also standard English magazines and peri- odicals. Open from 8 A. M. to 9 P. M .; Sundays, 9 A M. to 9 P. M.
Branch reading rooms are established in different parts of the city, as follows :--

OBSERVATORY.
The Chabot Observatory of Oakland established 1883) is situated in the middle of Lafayette Square which is Founded by Tenth, Eleventh, Jefferson and Grove streets. Its exact geograph- ical position is in latitude 37 48' 5" north, longitude 122 16' 34. 1" west from Greenwich, or in time & hours, 9 minutes, 6 sec- onds west of Greenwich, 3 hours 0 minutes, 54 seconds west from Washington. The observatory buiding, together with its splendid equipment, was the free gift of Anthony Chabot, Esq., to the Board of Education, in trust for the cry of Oakland. Monday evenings are reserved for the schools, and Friday even- ings for observatory work. Car s for admission on other even- ing- can be obtained on application to the Director, J. B.
