The California Patron was established in 1875, by authority and under the direction of the California State Grange, as a Farmers' Journal, owned and controlled by the farmers of the State of California, and is now and has been wholly devoted to the interests of the Farm and the Grange. It has maintained the reputation of the Farmer's Exponent and Advocate, and has been so well received and appreciated that its circulation has nearly doubled during the last year.
It was run as an eight-page monthly until 1878, when it changed to a semi-monthly, and ran as such until March 6, ISSO, when it appeared as a Weekly. On the Ist of January, 1882, its size was increased nearly one-half. On the 28th of October, 1882, its size was again increased.
On the 13th of September, 1884, it was again increased to a sixteen- page paper, cut and stitched, and the seventh increase was made Jan- uary Ist, 1885, to its present attractive size.

The Houser Combined Header and Thresher
Has Made Grain Raising Profitable.
The Machine above all others which has Revolutionized the Mode of Harvesting in California and Reduced the Cost of Harvesting to Less than $1.00 an Acre.
THE
HOUSER
THE PIONEER BELT MACHINE,
Ten Years Since first introduced. Every Houser Harvester sold has Given Entire Satisfac- tion. None ever Returned to the Works.
It has a larger sale than all other Harvesters combined. Has Steel Shafting and Gearing, 30-inch Cylinder, 42 and 46-inch Separator, and has been materially reduced in weight. It is a
Pull and Belt Machine.
Strong and Durable. Requires from three to four men and twelve to twenty-six animals, accord- ing to width of cut and condition of grain. The " HOUSER," as constructed for the harvest of 1887, has all the changes which the season of 1886 demonstrated as practicable. The Header part is detachable, enabling any size of Header, from 10 to 30-foot cut, to be used. It is a POWER- FUL MACHINE, capable of successfully harvesting the heaviest and worst lodged grain without fear of breaking. Its merits, and the universal satisfaction it has given in the harvest field, has made it THE FAVORITE, with many zealous advocates. It saves three bushels an acre over and above heading and threshing, or enough to pay the cost of harvesting, and places the grain in the sack at less cost than the old method of putting it in the stack. It has
Wide Header Draper, High, Wide Drive-Wheels, and Tire from 12 to 24 Inches Wide,
As ordered. Has harvested grain which yielded 70 bushels per acre, and cut, threshed, cleaned and sacked ready for market from 200 to 500 sacks per day, in a good and satisfactory manner.
IT IS GUARANTEED TO DO GOOD WORK WHEN PROPERLY HANDLED.
Send for circulars. Correspondence solicited. For further information, prices, etc., address S. C. H. & A. Works, Box M, Stockton, Cal., or
