CREMATORY
DENVER CREMATORY, CHAPEL, AND OFFICE
Is Cremation Better Than Burial?
The custom of cremation is as old as civilization. "It was in gen- eral practice in the ancient world, except in Egypt where bodies were embalmed, in Judea where they were buried in sepulchres, and in China where they were buried in the earth. [In Greece, where civilization reached its highest in both arts and letters, the custom was so well established in public favor that the privilege of cremation was denied to what might be termed "undesirable citizens." "The Greeks believed that only by fire could the body be dissolved and the soul released. Cremation fell into disuse in the early part of the Christian era, because the Christians were persecuted and forbidden the privilege of performing their re- ligious rites. Cremation could not be performed in secret, so earth burial was resorted to in order that the Christian service might be performed without detection. TFollowing this period came the crusades, when soldiers were buried on the battlefield simply because earth burial was the readiest means at hand. TSpecial equipment is necessary for cremation, and this fact has been the most potent reason for the practice of other methods.
(OVER)
Is Cremation Better Than Burial? (CONTINUED)
[There have been those who thought that cremation might not be consistent with the Christian doctrine of the resurrection of the dead. But "if this were true," says Lord Shaftesbury, "what would become of the blessed martyrs?" "Cremation has the en- dorsement of eminent bishops and clergymen of practically all relig- ious beliefs. Such leaders of thought as Phillips Brooks, Edward Everett Hale, DeWitt Talmage, Charles A. Dana, David Starr Jordan, Mary O. Stanton, Frances E. Willard, Charles Francis Adams, and others, have been ardent advocates of cremation. TSo strongly has the custom commended itself to leading men and women that societies have been formed in England, Germany, France and other foreign countries, for the encouragement of cre- mation. In these societies members of the nobility, and men and women eminent in science and letters, are largely represented. [Cremation recommends itself particularly from a SANITARY standpoint. Cremation simply does in 60 minutes what it takes the process of decomposition many years to perform. TThe science of embalming can retard, but it cannot prevent, the ultimate return of the body to the elements whence it came. TIf the thought of burial by fire is unpleasant, how much more revolting is the slow process of putrefaction? Cremation is a method of PURIFICATION, while earth burial is just the reverse. [Since the human body is 80% water, cremation is essentially a process of EVAPORATION. How much better to float heavenward in a white cloud of vapor than to be imprisoned in a cold, dark grave, there to be mangled and devoured by the germs of decomposition. TA prominent clergyman gives the following description of a cremation that he had witnessed: "As we turned away from the incinerary, where we had left the body of our friend, it was pleasant to think of him still resting in its rosy light, surrounded by what seemed to us as floods of purity. It was grateful, too, tofeel that whatever might remain after a brief hour of purifying work would be as he would wish it, clean and white, and, like his own pure self, without offense to thought or memory."
The cost of cremation for an adult is $50. The same kind of casket is used that would be required for earth burial except that it must not be of metal. The proper way to dispose of the ashes is to have them scattered, interred, or entombed in the family burial ground. There a memorial can be erected as a fitting tribute to the departed dead. However, if the family so desires, the ashes will be scattered by us on the cemetery lawn, or they may be scattered by some member or representative of the family. Until a decision is arrived at as to the final disposition of the ashes they may be kept in our Columbarium at a nominal price. The cost of shipping ashes by express to any part of the United States seldom exceeds $1.
Send for our free illustrated booklet, which gives full particulars about cremation. It will be sent sealed in PLAIN envelope if it is so requested.
