THIS is the Eighteenth annual issue of the HARTFORD CITY DIRECTORY. From a publication of 71 pages with a common paper cover, it has increased to a full bound book of nearly 350 pages. We have expended for this work, nearly $500 for original drawings and engravings of Church Edifices and Public Buildings. This year, we have made an important addition, viz .- a Business Directory-giving the names and places of all individuals engaged in business for themselves- classified under their respective vocations. The citizens of Hartford may rest assured that neither pains nor expense will be spared to make this Directory the most complete, perfect and handsome work of the kind that can be annually produced in this country. In our new Business Directory we show upwards of 130 kinds of business carried on in this city by more than 1000 dif- ferent persons, firms, and corporations. .

In this number we show the public what rapid ad- vanees our city has made within the last year, as well as within the last eighteen years. There has been noted by our canvassers this year, upwards of 1800 removals of house-keepers, boarders, &e. And upwards of 2000 new names have been added to our Directory. This year, in the list of Churches, Corporations, Societies, Schools, Banks, &c. &c. we have recorded more than 2000 changes from last year-last year there were 1800. The copy in which the corrections are made ; also a regular file of our City Directory for the past seventeen

years, ean be seen at No. 10 State street. In 1838 there were in the Directory 1462 names-this year there are upwards of 8000 names-and 1000 more than last year, and 6700 more than in 1838 !

The Subscriber also proeures Directories from all the other cities in the Union, where published, which are at the service of those who may desire to refer to the same. ELIHU GEER.

HARTFORD, CONN., May 24, 1855.

EXPLANATIONS.

THE business loeation of individuals engaged in business for themselves, is first mentioned in connee- tion with their names, and then their place of resi- dence. Especial pains has been taken to ascertain the name, residence, and occupation of every male person, twenty-one years of age and upwards.

When two different numbers are given in connection with one name, and only one street mentioned, the number first given is the place of business, and the second the residence, and both in the same street.

Several streets in the city have not been numbered. This will account for the omission of numbers in con- nection with certain names. And the city having nearly quadrupled since it was numbered eighteen years ago, there are innumerable instances where the inhabitants of two and more dwellings, claim the same number.

For boundaries of Wards see page 295 of this book.

The letter h. signifies house; res. residence; st. street ; bds. boards ; av. avenue; e. eorner ; op. opposite, &e.
