THIs edifice is built of Portland stone. The corner stone was laid August 20, 1851. It is 138 feet in length by os: feet in width. The audience room is 97 feet by 64's feet. The lec- ture room is 57 by 35 feet. There are 136 ships on the floor of the house, and 36 in the galleries; seats for 1050 persons. The spire is 212 ft. in height. TALCOTT STREET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCII, Corner of Talcott and Market sts.


THE Talcott Street Congregational Church in Hartford, was organized on the 28th of August, 1833. Dr. Hawes, pastor of the First Church, and the Pastor of the Second Church, officia- ted on the occasion. The Church was at first composed of seven members, who came by letter from the First Church in Hart- ford, and other churches in the vicinity. The Church, since its organization, has been supplied by Reverends D. T. Kimball, John A. Hempsted, E. R. Tyler, Dr. James W. C. l'enningtou, and C. W. Gardner.

TILs edifice was erected in 1798, by the 1st Baptist Church. and which they vacated in 1830. The Congregational Church occupying this edifice at the present time, was organized .Jan. 11th, 1854, with twenty-four members, viz : - four from the North, and four from the Fourth Congregationil Churches in this city, and sixteen from Churches out of the city. CHRIST CHURCH-EPISCOPAL.


Corner of Main and Church Streets. First Organization, 1792.


THE present edifice of Christ Church was begun in 1827. The corner stone was laid by Rt. Rev. Bishop Brownell, on the 13th of May, 1828. The Church is built of free-stone, and its extreme length, including the tower and butresses, is 12112 feet ; and the extreme breadth 76 feet; the tower. (which is of stone,) is 135 feet high, and 2236 feet square, fortified by double but . resses at the angles. This Church was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Hobart, on the 22d of December, 1829.


Chapel, situated in the rear of Church, was erected in 1836.

ST. JOHN'S CHURCH - EPISCOPAL. 97 Main Street. Organized March 18th, 1841.


THE corner stone was laid July 14th, 1941. by Rt. Rev. Bishop Brownell, was consecrated by the same prelate, to the glory and worship of the Most Holy Trinity. April 20th, 1542. The whole length of the Church, including tower and chancel. is 112 feet. The spire rises to a height of 190 feet from its base. The ma- terial of the chancel is brick; but the nave and tower are of free stone, from the Portland quarries.


The nave contains 136 pews, beside galleries, affording alto gether, convenient sittings for 850 persons.

The corner-stone of this edifice was laid by Bishop Williams on the 25th of July, 1854, and the church completed in April, 1855. The church is 74 feet in length, and 47 feet in width, exclusive of the chinneel, which is 6 feet by 20, and a vo-try room, 9 feet by 16. It contains 94 -lips on the floor, and has a gallery only for the organ and choir. It contains, also, a large leeturc room, for the accommodation of Sunday, Sewing Schools, &c., connected with this congregation. It is built upon land given by Geo. Beach, Esq., and exclusive of the land, cost only a little more than $8000. The plans were fnr- nished by Mr. W. T. Hallett, Architect, of Norwich, and Mr. Julins Young, of this city, was the builder.


The church will accommodate 500 persons. The Sunday School meets one hour before the afternoon service. The Sewing School meets on Saturday afternoons.

THE corner stone of this edifice was lail May 24th, 1845. and was dedicated. Aprit 2211. 1816. Its extreme length is $5 feet, and its width 65 feet. The height of the tower firan the base to the top of the pinnacle is 130 foor, and is 24 feet square at its base; the diameter is redneed to 16 feet at the top. Built of brown Portland stone. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, Between 231 and 233 Main street.


THE edifice of this Church is 84 by 60 feet, with a tower of 80 feet. The First Baptist Church in this city originated in 1789. Their present edifice was erected in 1830. 122 slips below, and 38 in the gallery; seating about 900. This Society are now erecting a new house of worship, on the corner of Main and Talcott streets, to cost $00,000, which is to be completed Jan. 1, 1856. Their present house of worship has been sold to the " Congregation Beth Israel," who will take possession Jan. 11, 1856.

Tirs edifice is of Portland stone. It is 160 feet long, and SO feet wide. The south tower is 80 feet high : the spire is 226 feet. The main audience room is 97 by 60 feet, and contains 178 pews, besides the galleries around three sides of the room. It will seat 1200 persons. The chapel, which is in the transept, will seat 400. The house was dedicated April 23, 1554.

ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL, Corner Church and Ann Sts.


THIS Church was dedicated December 14th, 1851. The length from the outside of tower to the outside of chaneel, is 160 feet, and the breadth is 80 feet. The height of the tower and spire from the ground is 200 feet. The Church floor contains 264 pews, and the galleries 98, and will seat 2700 persons. METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCHI, Corner of' Trumbull and Chapel Strects. Organized in 1820.


THIS Church was organized, and a house of worship erected in 1820, and enlarged in 1829. The house was improved in 1840. as a centennial commemoration of the organization of Methodism. It is 80 feet by 30, with 101 slips and a gallery, both seating about 900 persons. The steeple is so feet in height from the ground. The preseut number of Church members is about 100.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Organized Nor. 4. 1851.


THIS congregation purchased the South Baptist Church edi- fice, and took possession the 1st of July, 1-53. The church is situated upon the corner of Main and Sheldon streets. Size of edifice on Main street, 17 feet, on Sheldon street, 89 feet, with a tower 70 feet in height. Will seat about 750 persons.

GEER'S HARTFORD


SOUTH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH,


Corner Main and Buckingham sts. Organized Feb. 12th, 1669. (For engraving, see page 230.)


THE dimensions of this building are 96 feet in length, by 63 feet in breadth, with a portico in front, 42 by 12 feet, and a chapel in the rear, 36 by 80 feet, which makes the entire length of the building 144 feet. The porch is 60 by 16 feet. The height of spire is 180 feet. The present house of worship is the third which the Society has occupied. The first stood from seventy-five to ciglity years, the second from seventy-two to seventy-three years-both wooden structures. The present edifice is of brick; the corner stone was laid May 25th, 1825, and the house was dedicated April 11, 1827. It was enlarged in 1853. The audience room is 60 by 77 feet, with galleries. There are 130 pews below, and 48 above, and is estimated to seat 1100 hearers. The chapel room is 35 by 67 feet, and will seat 350 persons.


THIS SECOND CHURCH IN HARTFORD, was organized Feb. 12, 1669. [The Church in EAST HARTFORD, was also set off from the FIRST or CENTER CHURCH, and received a separate organization in May, 1702; an : that in WEST HARTFORD, Feb. 1713; on the 23d of September. 1824, ninety-seven members received dismission from this Church, and were, with others, organized as the NouTn CheRen; on the 10th of January, 1832, eighteen members of this Church, having received dismission, were organized with others, as the Free Church, now the FOURTH CHURCH. In 1852, a new church was formed,- the PEARL STREET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH,-by 36 mem bers from the Center, 15 from the South, 27 from the North, 3 from the 4th and 10 from churches out of the city. ]

FOURTH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH,


Dedicated April 3, 1850. 280 Main st. Organized Jun. 10. 1832.


IT was built in the Corinthian style of architecture, of brick. stuccoed to resemble stone. The spire rises to the height of 185 feet from the ground. Size, 63 by 100 feet. The ceiling and walls are beautifully frescoed. The pulpit is of white Ital- ian marble. There are 138 ships in the Church, aside from the gallery slips. The cost of lidt and building has been $26,000 There is a lecture room 40 by 48 feet in the rear.
