PREFACE.

THIS is the THIRTY-FIFTH consecutive year that GEER'S HARTFORD CITY DIRECTORY has been published. From a small pamphlet of 72 pages, 234 by 5 inches in size and 1625 names with only 10 pages of lists of corporations, societies, &c., it has steadily increased each year, until now we present our patrons with a large octave volume of about 300 pages, 5 by 8 inches in size, contain- ing nearly 15000 names; also 78 pages of a Business Directory, Corporations, Societies, etc. Be- sides, in four pages of our present list of Corporations, Societies, &c., there is as much infor- mation as was contained in the whole of the like portion of our Directory thirty years ago. Herein will be found the great epitome of the business of Hartford, together with all kinds of information desired by citizens or strangers in such a work as this.

We have added a new and very artistic Map of Hartford, which has been drawn and engraved expressly for this Directory. We also embellish our issue this year with Engravings of all the church Edifices in Hartford, also Engravings of some other public buildings; together with valuable statistics and information, too voluminous to enumerate in a preface-see contents of this work.

The canvass of Hartford City this Spring shows a net increase of 1042 names over that of last year. We have noted from our last year's Directory 2761 removals, alterations, &c., and erased 2189 names, and have added 3231 new names ; the number in this year's Directory being 14618 nanies. This shows, with the Business Directory changes from last year, 9355 instances where last year's Directory will mislead persons who may refer thereto ; and about as many more changes in corporations, societies, &c.

In our Business Directory, this year, we have added the names of 483 new firms, or individuals beginning business for themselves, and erased 299 ; showing a large net business increase of 184 firms the last year ; also have noted 392 removals and changes from our last year's Business Directory; thus showing 1174 changes in business firms in this City during the past 12 months.

Look at these facts, and then judge for yourselves of the little present value of a last year's Directory for reference in a city growing so rapidly as Hartford-examine this work, and peruse the vast amount and variety of information, then you will perceive the necessity of having one copy at your residence for the information of your family and visiting friends, as well as one at your place of business, of No. 35 of GEER'S HARTFORD CITY DIRECTORY.

The following table of the number of names contained in each number of this Directory since its first publication, shows the steady, rapid, and permanent growth of the City of Hartford :--

The amount of labor we have annually bestowed upon the preparation of this work cannot be appreciated by the uninitiated; some faint idea however may be obtained of it from the fact that each person's name, every corporation, society, etc. is not inserted in this Directory unless re-procured every year. To this fact one or more persons in every family, and some one officer in each corpo- ration, society, &c. can bear witness. In calling at every tenement in this city annually no less than nine distinct facts concerning each individual's name has to be ascertained and noted down, viz. the christian name-the middle name-the surname-the occupation-the business-at what num- ber-in what street -- and does he or she keep house or boards-and at what number and street. Now multiply these 14618 names by nine and we have 133,962 facts procured for the names, on only 116 of these pages. Then add thereto the facts collated in our Business Directory, List of Streets, Corporations, Churches, Societies, &c., and these will make an aggregation of over 310,000 facts stated in this work. Remember also, that after all this amount of laborious statistics is obtained, then comes the additional labors of transcribing the same for the compositor-then to be set up in type -- then proof read-then arranged alphabetically-then into pages-then printed for the bind- er. Now after all this transmutation of the information first procured at residences, is it strange that an occasional mistake should occur in some of these 310,000 facts? Yet the errors that we have heretofore been able to trace out we have found in nine cases out of ten have been made by persons giving us the information. For any mistake you may discover just give us the credit against each of such errors, the many thousands of correct statements: also ask yourself, if you have the patience or ability to do such work even as well. We do not believe that the citizens of any other city have had heretofore or will have this year a more full, correct or reliable Directory, than the citizens of Hart- ford have had annually in GEER'S HARTFORD CITY DIRECTORY.

The enlargement of our book places nearly three times as many names before the eyes of the reader upon each leaf as has been heretofore given-thus economizing two-thirds of the time of every person whenever looking over this book for information. Besides, this improvement solidi- fies and utilizes the work and makes it more in unison with what a City Directory should be.

PREFACE.

The alphabetical arrangements of the names we believe will be found superior to even our for- mer efforts in this line. To the several suggestions made to us by different person, by letter, etc. to arrange the names of the same family according to their ages; also the names of sons to come immediately under that of their father's respectively; also to arrange the names according to numbers on the houses, streetwise, instead of alphabetically, as we have for over thirty years, we here answer all such persons that from our experience in Directory matters, each and all these sugges- tions are wholly impracticable to the public utility of a Directory-which impracticability appears so evident on the face of each, that a refutation therof we deem supererogatory.

·

As an illustration of the rapid increase of population in this city, we are informed by one of the Registrars of Electors, that in his annual registration in February last, he found 65 new unoccupied tenements in North street. And in three months thereafter in canvassing for this Directory, he found all but eight of those tenements occupied. This is a specimen all over the city.

There are a great number of names that appear to be duplicates, but which are not, although alike. The number of persons of the same name is very large in this and every other city. For illustrations, we have two James Caughlan's-both at 11 Wells street, and both same occupation. We have two John Kinney's, both at 5 Kilbourn-one a laborer the other a belt maker. We found a William Baron, engraver, h. 69 Retreat, and a William Baron, 69 Willard-the latter over 90 years of age. We could extend the illustrations to pages.
