FIRST CHURCHI EDIFICE ERECTED IN HARTFORD.


The location of the first church has not been accurately ascertained. It was nearly upon the eastern end of State House Square; and the burying ground was bounded east and south by Market st. and State st. It was a square building probably framed, and with a thatched roof. In 1640 it had a bell. In 1649 the old church was given by the town to Mrs. Hooker, and a new one built.


FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCHI, No. 227 Main st. Organized Oct. 11, 1633.


The size of this edifice is 114 feet in lengthi by 79 in width. There are 150 Slips on the lower floor, and 75 in the gallery, which will seat about 1200 persons. Spire is 185 feet in height. Services 10.45 A. M. and 7.30 P. M.

The dimensions of this building are, 96 feet in length by 63 feet in breadth, with a portico in front 42 by 12 feet, and a chapel in the rear 36 by 80 feet. The porch is 60 by 16 feet. The height of spire is 180 feet.


The third house was dedicated April 11, 1827. The audience room is 60 by 77 feet, with gal- leries. There are 130 pews below and 48 above, and is estimated to seat 1,100 hearers. The chapel room is 35 by 67 feet, and will seat 350.

PARK CONGREGATIONAL CHURCHI, 170 Asylum st. Organized Sept. 23, 1824. Edifice dedicated Mar. 29, 1867.


This new and tasty edifice erected on the corner of Asyhun and High sts., and front- ing-the City Park, has sittings for about 1000 persons without galleries, costing with land $150,000. Dimensions inside are 115 feet long and 66 wide, height of nave 60 feet, chapel with other rooms in rear and connection there- with is 82 by 40 feet with 400 sittings. This edifice is of the early English ornamented style with true Gothic windows and doors, walls of brown Portland stone in blocks rough hewn. All of the ornamental portions are of the yellow Dorchester or commonly called Nova Scotia stone. The windows are all of rich stained glass with ornamental sash 7 by 14 feet. At the S. E. corner is the tower to be surmounted with a spire 184 feet high of Nova Scotia stone. The interior nave and aisles are in regular English style. Wood work is chestnut finished in oil. A commodious chapel with other rooms for church purposes are attached to the rear of the main edifice. Services 10.45 A. M., and 7.45 P. M.

IT is built in the Corinthian style of archi- tecture, of brick, stuccoed to resemble stone. The spire rises to the height of 185 feet from the ground; size, 63 by 100 feet. The ceil- ing and walls are beautifully frescoed. The pulpit is of white Italian marble. There are 138 slips in this church, aside from the gallery slips. A lecture room, 40 by 48 feet, in the rear. The Church edifice is built of Portland stone. The corner stone of the main building was laid May 5, 1865. The extreme length of the Church and Chapel is 184 feet. The dimensions of the Audience Room of the Church are 112 feet long and 68 feet wide, and 186 pews and seats 930 persons on the floor of the house. The pews are of chestnut decorated with black walnut, finished in oil. The Chapel is 65 by 42 feet, and seats 350 persons. Services 10.45 A. M., and 7.30 P. M.

THE Talcott Street Congregational Church in Hartford, was organized on the 28th of August, 1833. Dr. Hawes, pastor of the First Church, and the Pastor of the Second Church officiated on the occasion. The Church was at first composed of seven members, who came by letter from the First Church in Hartford, and other churches in the vicinity. The Church, since its organization, has been sup- plied by Reverends D. T. Kimball, John A. Hempsted, E. R. Tyler, Dr. J. W. C. Penning- ton, and C. W. Gardner. Present number of members, 80. Services 10.45 A. M., and 3 P. M.

WETHERSFIELD AVENUE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH .- 154 WETHERSFIELD AVENUE.


This edifice, recently finished, and much admired for the beauty of the design, is built of wood, in the early English style; the ontside walls sheathed and thickly covered with paint and sand, the color being a close imi- tation of the Cumberland Bav stone. It has a variegated slate roof, with turret and a fine toned bell at the West end. The ceiling is light blue, supported by dark brown trusses and posts, with crimson and black mould- ings. . The rest of the wood work is chestnut and black wahint, finished in oil.


The windows are of stained glass. Dimensions inside are 60 feet long and 35 wide, with sittings for about 300 persons. There is a commodious room attached to the rear, designed for the infant class in the Sabbath School, and other purposes, 23 feet by 20 in sizc. FIRST METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH .- 129 ASYLUM STREET.


This church was organized, and a house of worship erceted, in 1820, on 136 Trumbull st., and enlarged in 1829. The new edifice is built of brick, with basement of Portland stone. It was commenced in May, 1859; finished and dedicated April 4, 1860. The whole building. from front to rear, aside from towers, is 95 by 65 feet in width. The au- dience room is 73 by 6232 feet. The walls and ceiling are finely frescoed. Audience room floor contains 134 pews, and will scat, includ- ing gallery, 1,100 persons. The east tower is 12 fect square, and 66 feet high: the west tower, an octagon, 16 feet in diameter, and 108 feet high. There is a gallery, back of the preacher's desk, for the choir. The basement has a fine lecture room 40 by 62 feet, 4 class rooms, and a parlor 40 by 18 ft. Members, 400

The first Baptist Church in this city was or- ganized in 1789, and in 1795 erected the building on the corner of Market and Temple sts., which they occupied until 1-31, when they erected a new house of Worship on Main st., now occupied by the "Congregation Beth Israel."


The present structure of trimmed Portland sandstone was dedicated April 23d, 1856. The audience room is 107 by 63 feet, and 45 feet to the crown of the arched ceiling Pews, 160 ou floor, and 44 in galleries; seats for 1,100. The Chapel is 56 by 37 ft. and 27 ft. high. The Vestibule is 37 by 32 ft., divided into central passages and aisles by couplar columns of Caen Stone, with carved capitals. Present number of members, upwards of 700. Services 10.45 A. M., and 3 P. M.

The chapel, which is in the transept, will seat 400. . The house was dedicated April 23, 1854. Number of members about 650. Organized Oct. 21. 1834. Services 10.45 A. M., and 7.30 P. M.

The Church is built of free-stone. and its extreme length, including the tower and buttresses, is 121% feet; and the extreme breadth 76 feet; the tower, ( which is of stone,) is 135 feet high, and 2212 feet square, fortified by double bnttresses at the angles. This Church was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. Bi-hop Hobart, on the 224 of December, 1829. Their Chapel, situated in the rear of Church, was erected in 1836. Services at 10.45 A. M., and 7.15 P. M.

ST. JOHN'S CHURCH-EPISCOPAL. 178 Main street. Organized March 18th, 1841.


THE corner stone was laid July 14th, 1841, by Rt. Rev. Bishop Brownell, was conse- crated by the same prelate, to the glory and worship of the Most Holy Trinity, April 20th, 1842. The whole length of the Church, in- cluding tower and chancel, is 112 feet. The spire rises to a height of 190 feet from its base. The material of the chaneel is briek; but the nave and tower are of free stone, from the Portland quarries. The nave contains 136 pews, besides galleries, affording sittings for $50 per- sons. Services 10.45 A. M., and 3.15 P. M.

The corner stone of this edifice was laid Thursday, 27th Oct., 1860: and was dedi- cated in May, 1861. Its extreme length is 85 feet (with vestry room on the rear of 16 by 25 feet) and width 65 feet. The height of tower from the base to the top of the pinnacle is 130 feet, and is 24 feet square at the base and is reduced to 16 feet at the top. Built of brown Portland stone. No galleries in the interior. No. of Slips, 108. Annual meeting, Easter Monday. Sittings free. Services 10.45 A. M., and 4 P. M ; on 4th Sunday of each month evening service at 7.45 P. M.

CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD .- EPISCOPAL. Organized, 1866.


Edifice is situated on the corner of Wyllys and Hendricxsen aveunes. It was erected by Mrs. Samuel Colt as a memorial to her de- ceased husband and children and was conse- crated to the worship of Almighty God, Jan. 28th, 1869. It is built in the Gothic style, of Portland hewn stone finished with Ohio white stone, and is 114 by 47 feet, with a height of 60 feet, and a spire 150 feet high. Fronting to the North is the Sunday School room, forming a transept to the main building, and is entered through a porch and door at its north-west corner. The entrance to the Bap- tistery is on the south side of the chancel, near its junction with the Nave. At the south- west corner is the principal entrance to the church. It is a stone porch with pointed roof. In the western front is the much admired large memorial window. The building has a series of richly stained glass windows. The roof is covered with red and blue slates, arranged in patterns. The completeness of the work and the beauty of finish everywhere, demand per- sonal observation to be appreciated. Cost about $200,000. Sittings free. There is a chime of nine bells in the tower of this edi- fice. Services 10.30 A. M., and 7.45 P. M.
